India's Ministry of Defence (MoD) is likely to scrap its 2011 tender for 66,000 multi-calibre assault rifles after four overseas vendors failed to meet the Indian Army's qualitative requirements (QRs) in user trials that concluded in October 2014, official sources said.

The Czech Republic's Czeca CZ 805 BREN, Italy's Beretta ARX 160, the Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) ACE 1 (a variant of the company's ACR rifle), and the United States' Colt Combat Rifle (a M16A1 specially configured for the Indian contract) are competing for the INR48.50 billion (USD782.25 million) deal.

The contract cost includes reflex, day- and night-sights, and laser designators.

Most of the developed world with a ahitload of money use these in extreme conditions and have exported them to several nations with success...


Meanwhile you are also using "failed foriegn guns"...


As for INSAS... Yeah an ugly (not known do things like ergonomics),semi auto (prone to jamming) and badly manufactured is a success compared to "failed" guns like M-16,C-805,ACE,B-160..

some of the criteria are mentioned here....

the Army has stated requirement for a gun which has two barrels that can be used in different types of operations, army sources said here.

For counter-insurgency operations, we want the guns to be equipped with barrels of 7.62mm calibre bullets, and for conventional warfare, we want the gun to fire 5.56mm bullets, they said.

The multi-role assault rifles are being procured to replace the existing INSAS series of rifles from the Infantry battalions, they said.

The sources said such a rifle would also help in saving cost for procuring two different types of guns for the troops and would require only three parts, including the barrel and the magazine, to be changed which would be possible at the unit level only.

The Army wants the new guns not to be heavier than 3.6 kilograms, almost half kilogram lighter than the INSAS rifles.

The Army has sought complete transfer of technology from the vendors so that the guns can be license produced at Indian ordnance factories.

The force also wants the rifles to be equipped with under barrel grenade launchers and capable of firing indigenously- produced ammunition.

The INSAS rifles, designed by the DRDO, were inducted into the armed forces in the 90s and have been used in the Kargil war and counter-insurgency operations also.

In its early days with the force, the rifles had faced reliability problems in cold climate in places such as Kashmir Valley and Siachen glacier.

problems might be operating same gun into various conditions like Arctic Warfare(something like Siachen) in -50 degree ,in Desert(Rajasthan) in 50 degree,in dusty environments,humid conditions and such...very few guns cut these marks...in fact,very few hardwares are ever made for these kind of massive range of demanding conditions.

the solution is,make something of your own...

the result....

it may not be world beater in every field,but may be suitable in these environments..but then media will cry for using these "inferior" products.

A) they are not as per the requirement of Indian standards ...... If these guns failed in trails , they are also considered in same class. lol ...

Semi Automatic ? INSAS is fully automatic .... not ugly and its gone to edge .....
