An Indian official has reiterated that India will not step back in face of China’s warnings against its collaboration with Vietnam in exploring oil and gas in the East Sea, the Vietnam News Agency reported Friday.

The East Sea is the world’s property, and no one has right to control it unilaterally, the report quoted Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Planning Ashwani Kumar as saying.

India is fully capable of protecting its financial interests and national strategies, he said.

Earlier, on April 6, Indian External Affairs Minister S. M. Krishna made the same statement about the East Sea, saying that trade-ways must be free of any national interference, the news agency reported
Last September China warned Indian companies against entering oil and gas agreement with Vietnam in the East Sea, after learning that India planned a project to explore oil in two blocks offshore Vietnam.

In October, Vietnam and India signed an agreement on expanding oil exploration and production in the sea.

Recently China made the same objection after the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) signed an pact with the Russian energy giant Gazprom to set up a partnership to explore gas in the East Sea on April 5.

In response to China’s comment, Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ spokesman Luong Thanh Nghi on Thursday said all the oil and gas projects that Vietnam is cooperating with foreign partners on are within the country’s sovereign territories and in accordance with international laws

We cooperation to develop with international law.

This is wonderful news , India needs to diversify its oil sources and oil from Vietnam's east sea is wonderful opportunity for both countries to increase bilateral trade and co operation !!!

As long as oil is extracted within Vietnam's EEZ there should not be any issues.:)

keep them brag...

by the way..when are we going to plant some oil rigs in there???

and did Vietnam ensured India about protect of those assets??

When asked about China’s requesting Russia to stop oil and gas projects in the East Sea, the spokesperson confirmed Vietnam’s commitment to protecting its foreign partners.

“Vietnam is committed to protecting the legal rights and benefits of its foreign partners,” he said.

Current cooperation projects between Vietnam and its foreign partners in oil and gas, including projects with Gazprom, are all located in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf under the country’s absolute sovereignty in accordance with international laws, particularly the United Nations Convention on Law of the Sea in 1982, he said.

The areas that Vietnam and India as well as Vietnam and Russia have oil drilling venture are completely in Vietnam's EEZ, 200 nautical miles from Vietnam's shore. It is also entirely within the control of the BrahMos missile. If the Chinese ships harass, we'll let them sink to the seabed.

What is China waiting for ...? Grand Finale warning ..?

Just a few days of sustained bombing campaign over new delhi and entire states will declare independence from the union. india's economy has already tanked (growth at 1.6% ....... LOL at double-digit dreams) and Naxals are the strongest internal force in india.

I guess this is the little red Chinese book version they learnt in their schools ...

By the way why did you go back from Vietnam... couldn't you keep it occupied ,were your driven back just too scared of them :guns:

What's funny is that when the PLA invaded Vietnam in 1979, which was to try to "punish" Vietnam's invasion of Khmer Rouge-occupied Cambodia, the Chinese sent a well trained force. The Vietnamese were rather strategic, I must admit.

Instead of tackling the Chinese head on with regular units, they deployed paramilitary and militia against the PLA, inflicting deadly blows on the Chinese expeditionary force via their guerilla tactics.

Vietnam kept the 300,000 Regular units in reserve for the defense of Hanoi; and did not pull back the 150,000 soldiers that were still in Cambodia. The Chinese suffered horrendous losses; almost 30,000 dead; seeing that the Russians were not too happy to have PLA forces in Vietnam, Deng ordered the PLA out of Vietnam and declared that their punitive expedition a victory.

Despite the losses the Vietnamese incurred, which is expected considering a PLA force of regular troops and artillery shelled civilian regions defended by militia, the Vietnamese were still capable of inflicting a 30,000 man loss on the PLA. Not bad considering the expedition lasted less than a year. lol.

One has to look at the geopolitical reasons for starting the war. Vietnam invaded Cambodia and toppled the Chinese-supported Khmer Rouge Regime led by Pol Pot (responsible for the deaths of over 2 million khmers in cambodia). China invaded Vietnam in response to Vietnam's invasion of Cambodia. The reason for invading Cambodia was to ensure that Vietnam left Cambodia. That failed. Despite the Chinese invasion of Northern Vietnam, the Vietnamese still occupied Cambodia and drove the Khmer Rouge into Thailand and set up a Vietnamese-friendly government in Cambodia.

China suffered a tactical and operational failure in this war. The reason for invading Vietnam was to force the Viets out of Cambodia; that failed; additonally, China lost 30,000 soldiers; while at the same time, none of the regular Vietnamese troops were deployed. 30,000 Chinese soldiers were killed by Vietnamese militia and paramilitary units. Pretty baddass militia, if you ask me.

 LOL trying to feel better about USA's experiences in 'Nam?

Vietnam suffered far far worse than China in 1979 and even their treaty ally USSR was powerless to protect them! After a few more skirmishes in 1984 (Laoshan) and 1988 (Johnson Reef), Vietnam came to Beijing to seek normalization of relations in the early 90's.

The normalization of relations held until about 2010 when Vietnam decided to go hostile against China again. Alas, China is no longer the same country as in the 70's and 80's, our economy grew like 50 times, and Vietnam is entering a world of pain.

:)

Internet warriors :D

the govts. are not as trigger happy as some here want them to be. War is ugly for all sides involved.

India says oil, gas cooperation with Vietnam in the East Sea will continue

Enough said.

We sitting in our cozy rooms do not decide our nation's policy. Let our leaders do that.
