New Delhi—Working on a new two- front war strategy with Pakistan and China, India has started building nuclear shelters in big cities and military centres. Under a military plan, hundreds of underground big shelters will be built to counter possible “nuclear assaults” from Pakistan and China.

The shelters will also be built along the metro lines in the capital, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. Some big shelters will accommodate command and control centres, hospitals and training centres.

Each big shelter will have capacity to accommodate eight thousand persons in case of hostility. Special shelters will be constructed to accommodate VIPs, VVIPs and other dignitaries.

India is building up its military muscles and New Delhi has planned to spend $ 30 billion in next five years on purchase of advanced weapons from Russia, Israel, European nations and the United States.

Nice try at building war hysteria. BTW, it's common sense that any country with a nuclear arsenal has to take appropriate measures to shield its assets and important persons in the command chain from a potential nuclear attack.

Looks like the author has a problem even with India building shelters!

Yes because your primary nuclear threat, the erstwhile USSR no longer exists and you have a pretty decent relationship with Russia and China now.

On the contrary, India has two hostile nuclear-armed neighbours among which, one has all its hopes pinned on its nuclear arsenal since its conventional military is no match to India's.

Hence, in current scenario, it's much more momentous for India to have nuclear shelters than it is for the US.

Don't fool yourself. Shelters give a false sense of confidence against nuclear war. Only a very, very tiny minority of your people could be protected. And, truth be told, the very people who most deserve to be annihilated would be the ones who would be saved. So, give it up. Instead of spending the money on shelters, you should develop a better assassination capability and take out the leaders in those worrisome countries who might think ill of you .....

Shelters give a false sense of confidence against nuclear war. Only a very, very tiny minority of your people could be protected. And, truth be told, the very people who most deserve to be annihilated would be the ones who would be saved.

Ethically true as your statement might be, the fact remains that during war, the command chain starting from Prime Minister and including the service chiefs, commanders etc. must be protected in order to carry on the war and to reply to any misadventure against the country in a befitting manner.

The common public cannot decide upon the war strategies for which there is a proper command chain in place and which must be protected at all costs.

So, give it up. Instead of spending the money on shelters, you should develop a better assassination capability and take out the leaders in those worrisome countries who might think ill of you .....

I second that. Not the fact that we should not build shelters but that we should build shelters AND take out enemies of the state just like the CIA or Mossad do.

Its not like indians cant respond to a nuclear strike. At least they are building something lol. And besides a nuclear bomb does nothing to cripple a war effort. Japan was already on the brink of surrender when the US dropped the bomb. Even then key japanese commanders felt they shouldn't surrender. What a nuclear strike can do is isolate the offensive nation, justify any amount of atrocity the "defending" nation does in the name of revenge, and an unending series of embargoes, sanctions and attacks. Pakistan is not the US to pull something like that and actually get away with it. I hope you get the point.
