New Delhi: Terming the Persian Gulf region India's "natural partner", Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao on Sunday reiterated that India supports Iran's right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy and will join hands with the international community to counter problems of piracy in the Indian Ocean.

"India's stand on the Iran nuclear issue has been consistent. We support the right of all states, including Iran, to peaceful uses of nuclear energy consistent with their international obligations," Rao said at the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) conference on "India and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, Iran and Iraq: Emerging Security Perspectives".

Nearly 100 delegates from India and the Gulf region are participating in the two-day conference, inaugurated Saturday by Vice President Hamid Ansari.

The GCC countries are Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Rao said that the problem of piracy in the Indian Ocean "has dramatically illustrated potential threats that we all face", adding that India has expressed its readiness to play its part in combating this menace with the international community under the leadership of the UN.

Rao also stressed on the need for a stable and peaceful Afghanistan and Palestine.

"The restoration of stability in Afghanistan and assistance to the people and government of Afghanistan as they build a peaceful, democratic, pluralistic and prosperous society is in the common interest of all our countries."

She said that the issue of Palestine is of abiding concern to both the regions and that the situation "requires to be resolved at the earliest... We continue to extend our full support to the Palestinians in realising their aspirations for a sovereign, independent, viable and united state living side by side, and at peace with the state of Israel".

Rao reiterated India's desire to an enhanced partnership with the GCC countries and Iran and Iraq.

"This is not only a strategic and economic imperative but would also represent a natural progression from our historical and civilisational ties which have few, if any, parallels in the world," she said.

It was always India's position. I mean hey we made it clear that civil nuclear power is cool but no nukes. What can we do if they misunderstood us? Now Mr. Khamenei better retract that statement of his.

Yeah...Mr. Khamenei should take back his statement - Or it will lead to futher strain in Indo - Iran relations

hahahahah and Iran does not need fuel it has alot of oil even surplus.

So India should stop playing with words its not something which others are not saying ;)

Iran needs nukes against Israeli and US invasion just like we needed nukes as deterrence against India.

Jana Ji: Having crude oil is NOT the same as having fuel. Overall, Iran imports gasoline and other distillates, and will reduce this dependence only if its domestic refineries are upgraded by 2015.

Even then, the expertise needed to keep those refineries running long term is not local.

This is the limitation of many other countries too.

But indians were saying since he does not represent Iranian government hence Indians dont give a shyt to his statement.

what happened now?
or is the rehtoric of supporting Iran is result of that one statement ?:azn:

Moo ki khani pari India ko... hehe..

Iran imports most of its processed oil from India. The Reliance industries have build world's biggest refinery in Gujarat for refining Iranian oil but after US sanctions Reliance have asked USA to prove them alternative and now they supply to USA.

Jutt je you needed make this research but let me do for you and others.

2009
Again, India votes against Iran’s nuclear programme - Express India

Again, India votes against Iran’s nuclear programme

2005-6
In two crucial votes at the Governors' Board of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in 2005 and 2006, India voted against Iran. The first time to condemn Iran for not meeting its obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the second time to report Iran's file to the UN Security Council

Reference:US Coercion of India against Iran at IAEA | Campaign Against Sanctions and Military Intervention in Iran

So your "Always Support" Iran on even Civil Nuclear Issue argument is fallacious. Also Iran has two top enemies.

1 - Israel
2 - United State

and both are India's closest allies or getting closest allies with every passing month. Iran has one of the strongest Ideological base which constitutes everything Iran does and in this context as well as global developments, Iran and India will end up getting distant.

Also, you may not like to read/believe or might like to laugh but Iran is going to be an ally with Pakistan in future conflicts as per predictions of Nematullah Shah Wali.

Again, India votes against Iran’s nuclear programme
Quoting from the article above:
On the Iran vote, India took the stand that the IAEA Director General’s latest report makes it difficult to overlook Tehran’s non-compliance with the subsidiary safeguards arrangements. “The Agency’s safeguards system is the bedrock of the international community’s confidence that peaceful uses of nuclear energy and non-proliferation objectives can be pursued in a balanced manner. The integrity of this system should be preserved,” stated India in its explanation of vote.

India does support Iran's nuclear programme as long as it is within the framework of the IAEA guidelines. Hope that makes India's standing clear.

Thats why I say Baghal me churi mo me Raam Raam. If India wasn't supporting Iran altogether, the "Raam Raam" part of proverb couldn't be true. :pop: India likes to show we are with you in special way.. just like it told Sri-Lankans that "we are against Tamil Tigers" after their elimination was inevitable. So is the case here..

By the way, what you just did is called "Cherry Picking". Now if Iran knows India is on its side, it would never had extended the hand of recent cooperation with Pakistan or had spoken against Indian Interests. Existing developments are a material for everybody to learn from.

Cherry Picking for sure ... but to prove a point nevertheless. The claim made by an Indian member was towards support to Iran's Civil nuclear program.. and the definition of a civil nuclear program are clearly defined by the IAEA regulations. As long as Iran is adhering to the generally accepted guidelines, we will support.
