India to ink largest-ever defence deal with the US soon

These "Year of X in Y" are nothing special and have happened for years. What Russia would be watching closely is India's position on key issues that pit Russia against US, i.e. Baltic states/Ukraine/Georgia/Missile Shield.

Indian simmering over confidence & exuberance in its self-projected abilities will very soon bear fruit for Pakistan having access to Russian military hardware! :enjoy: The Russians are asserting themselves over the US while India is wooing the US by inking multi-billion dollar deals! Your former partner is heading south while you are heading north????

And eventually when the US asks India to support Georgia's and Ukraine's annexation into NATO down the line, I would love to see how your government bureaucrats say NO by then having all this cool recently arrived US hardware in your armories? The taste of this pudding lies in the eating which is still a few years away!

Above wishful thinking is simmering among Pakistani Internet warriors since too long, but one thing they failed to understand even russians now a days doesn't comes cheap like they earlier do. Pakistan still yet to surpass many barriers before it can see itself being accomodiating withing Russian needs. Indo-Russian ties aren't restricted to Weapon supply, rather ties between two nations further got deepen with inking of Nucler deal similar to Indo-US Nucler deal.

Wishful Thinking of the netties you say?? President Putin himself approved the sale of Soviet engines for JF-17 aircraft few months back despite having back-breaking anti-sale lobbying from Indian Embassy in Moscow. Pakistan is already flying a large fleet of Mi-17 helicopters bought from Kazan and Ulan Uday! We are also vying for the Russian Mi-35 Hind's Night Attack version helicopters a deal which is pretty close to maturing; I may say we have crossed many of the hurdles and you will see a few more pleasant surprises from Russia coming in the near future too!! Russian equipment may be expensive but its still cheaper than that of the US! Plus, inducting Russian weapons into Pakistan will be coming full circle considering the origins of most of the Chinese equipment!

For India the Indo-US ties will come at a cost of Indo-Russia ties which will eventually be Pak-Russian ties!! So please keep doing what you are doing in India and leave the rest to us here in Pakistan! :smokin:

My dear friend, India is an asset. It presents a goldmine of opportunities for the west. Indo and Russian relationship today is in such a mature stage that they totally believe in each other. We know, we are rock solid allies and donot always have to say it out loud.
This deal is for the p-8i Posideon aircraft, is the biggest such deal with USA, and dosent nearly compare with the kind of deals we have with Russia.

The time of buyer-seller relationship with Russia is over. Now, we are looking at co-producing military hardware together. Be it Brahmos or Pak-FA.. it's just the tip of an ice-berg...thats what the future is gonna be like..

Like I said..............Keep up the good work, the one sided view of being royalty, the delusion of grandeur and the bollywood hype at your end and protect the ASSet that is your India!

Please refer to google and see what all stuff were Inked when the Russian President came in December to India! The Nuclear deal with US has benefited the Russians!

You mean the smoky RD-33 engines with which your own ACM was not satisfied. :bounce:

Now, things apart, let's discuss business...

Let's learn more about the aircraft..and what it means for the Indian Navy..

The Boeing P-8 Poseidon aircraft..

The P-8A Poseidon is a long-range anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance aircraft. It possesses an advanced mission system for maximum interoperability in battle space. Capable of broad-area, maritime, and littoral operations, the P-8A is expected to influence how the U.S. Navy's maritime patrol and reconnaissance forces train, operate, and deploy.

Power:

A next-generation derivative of the 737-800, the P-8A is powered by the CFM56-7 engine, which also powers the Boeing 737 Airborne Early Warning & Control aircraft and C-40 transport.

* 27,300 pounds of takeoff thrust per engine
* 30 million flight hours, with an industry-leading 0.002 percent in-flight
shut-down rate per 1,000 flight hours.

Production Team and Assignments:

The P-8A is being developed for the U.S. Navy by a Boeing-led team.

* Boeing provides airframe modifications and fuselage production, development and integration of software and onboard mission systems, and training systems development.
o Fuselage built in Wichita, Kansas
o P-8A production assembly in Renton, Washington
o Quality and performance acceptance flight testing, Renton Field
o Final installations and checkout, Boeing Field
o Flight testing at the Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland

* CFM International (a 50/50 joint company comprising Snecma Moteurs and General Electric Company) supplies the CFM56-7 engine.
* Northrop Grumman provides the directional infrared countermeasures system, the electronic support measures system, data link development, and mission-planning support.
* Raytheon provides the upgraded APS-137 maritime surveillance radar and signals intelligence (SIGINT) solution; a GPS anti-jam, integrated friend or foe, and towed decoy self-protection suite; a broadcast info system (BIS); and secure UHF satcom capability.
* GE Aviation supplies flight-management and stores-management systems.
* Spirit AeroSystems builds the 737 aircraft's fuselage and airframe tail sections and struts.

History and Schedule:

The U.S. Navy plans to purchase 108 P-8A to replace its fleet of P-3 aircraft.

* Component advanced development (CAD) award, September 2002
* System development and demonstration (SDD) award, June 2004
* Systems requirements review, September 2004
* Preliminary design review, September 2005
* Flight-test delivery of first aircraft, 2009
* Initial operational capability and expected full-production decision, 2013

More Info.....This is from Wiki....

The Boeing P-8 Poseidon (formerly the Multimission Maritime Aircraft or MMA) is a military aircraft currently being developed for the United States Navy. It is intended to conduct anti-submarine warfare, shipping interdiction, and to engage in an electronic intelligence (ELINT) role. This will involve carrying torpedoes, depth charges, Harpoon anti-shipping missiles, and other weapons. It will also be able to drop and monitor sonobuoys. It is designed to operate in conjunction with the Broad Area Maritime Surveillance unmanned aerial vehicle. The P-8 is to be built by Boeing's Integrated Defense Systems division from the 737-800.

Development:

The P-8's predecessor, the Lockheed P-3 Orion ASW aircraft has been in service with the U.S. Navy since 1961. In the mid-1980s the Navy began studies for a replacement aircraft for the P-3 which has lost range/time on station capabilities due to increasing weight and is approaching the end of its airframe fatigue life. The Navy specification also required reduced operating and support costs. In 1989 the Navy awarded a fixed-price contract to Lockheed to design and build two prototype aircraft, to be designated the P-7. This project was canceled in 1990 following a $300 million cost overrun by Lockheed and resulting delays.Boeing and Lockheed Martin were part of a new competition for a replacement aircraft begun in 2000. Lockheed submitted the Orion 21, an updated, new-build version of the P-3 turboprop, while Boeing submitted a proposal centered around their 737-800ERX airliner. BAE Systems offered a new-build version of the Nimrod MRA4, the newest version of the UK's indigenous jet-powered maritime patrol aircraft. However, BAE withdrew from the competition in October 2002, recognizing the political reality that the failure to find a US-based production partner made the bid unrealistic.[1]

On 14 June 2004, Boeing won the competition.[2] Initial operating capability is expected to be 2013. The project is expected to be for at least 108 airframes for the U.S. Navy alone, and perhaps more to other nations operating over 200 P-3s. Project value is expected to be worth at least $15 billion, or as much as $45 billion. Raytheon, Northrop Grumman, Spirit AeroSystems, GE Aviation Systems, Marshall Aerospace, CFMI, BAE Systems, and Marotta are major subcontractors.[1]

The U.S. Navy placed an order for five MMA aircraft on 8 July 2004. The first flight test aircraft is scheduled for delivery in 2009. The first aircraft will be a test aircraft, and will be converted to production standards at a later date.

In U.S. service the Poseidon will be complemented by the Broad Area Maritime Surveillance UAV system, which will provide continuous surveillance. The system is expected to enter service around 2010. Around 40 UAVs will be used in the program. As of 2005, the Global Hawk, the Mariner and Predator UAVs are being considered for the role.[3]

Due to the cancellation of Lockheed Martin's Aerial Common Sensor project, Boeing will propose a signals intelligence variant of the P-8 to service the requirement for the U.S. Navy.[4]

Exports and foreign involvement:

The U.S. Department of Defense wants to follow a program template similar to that of the Joint Strike Fighter program, with international cooperation from prospective MMA users.[citation needed] This would include many of the fifteen nations that currently use the P-3. The MMA project should avoid one of the major problems of the JSF, that of technology transfer.[citation needed] The MMA, while incorporating much high technology, would not include such proprietary and sensitive characteristics as stealth technology.

The Australian Minister for Defence announced on 20 July 2007 that the P-8A MMA had been selected as the preferred aircraft to replace the Royal Australian Air Force's fleet of AP-3C Orions in conjunction with a yet-to-be-selected unmanned aerial vehicle. The last RAAF AP-3C is scheduled to be retired in 2018, after nearly 30 years of service.[5]

Italy indicated interest for a purchase of a total of 14 Wedgetail and MMA aircraft, with fleet support provided by Alitalia in 2004.[6] However, in December 2008 Italy announced the purchase of four ATR-72 turboprop aircraft to replace its aging Atlantic Maritime Patrol Aircraft, which "likely means the Italy's ambitions to join the U.S. Navy's MPA program are dead."[7] Canada and Australia may each pay up to $300 million in order to have first-tier participation in the MMA project.[8] This may or may not involve workshare agreements. However, with Boeing Australia already participating in the related Wedgetail development, some level of offset seems likely.[citation needed]

In January 2008, Boeing proposed P-8I Poseidon, a customized export variant of the P-8A, to the Indian Navy.[9] On January 4, 2009, the Ministry of Defence of India signed an agreement with Boeing for the supply of eight P-8I Poseidons at a total cost of US$2.1 billion. These aircraft would replace Indian Navy's aging Tupolev Tu-142M maritime surveillance turboprops.[10] Each aircraft will cost about US$220 million.[11]

Design:

The P-8 is a militarized version of the 737-800. The airframe is a similar but longer than the 737-700-based C-40 Clipper. The P-8 is unique in that it has 767-400ER-style raked wingtips, instead of the blended winglets available on 737NG variants.[12] It also includes 6 additional body fuel tanks, three in the forward cargo compartment and three in the rear, for extended range. These are manufactured by Marshall Aerospace in Cambridge, UK.

India first country after USA to get it's hands on this aircraft.

This has been going on in this forum itself for years. I will show a post more than a year old.

What i am reading from you is a wishful thinking!

Russia will have no choice but to deal with Pakistan on military terms once India introduces U.S. military equipment to her armed forces.

Do you really think Russians are nut-cases? Its called business!

Apart from that Russia controls Indian-defence spending, it feeds the defence ministers.

I am sure Pakistan dealing with Russia will decrease the dependence on U.S. military equipment, and cheap cost-effective systems can be introducted to the Pakistan Armed Forces.

Russia after all is a soverign nation, who doesn't have to follow what India says! So whatever India goes for -- will be interesting to look for.

I guess people are still expecting the same. Things have moved little if anything at all.

Keep hoping against the hope. It doesn't cost money. You won't have to borrow from IMF for that.
