AFP: India to get early warning radar system

India to get early warning radar system

NEW DELHI (AFP) — India is expected to acquire its first Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) next week, officials said Monday, crowning its drive to achieve air dominance over rival Pakistan.

The delivery by Israel of the sophisticated Phalcon early warning radar surveillance system, set for May 20, will also mark another milestone in growing military ties with the Jewish state.

The AWACS "will be deployed straight away," air force spokesman T.K. Singha told AFP.

The AWACS is the first of three units that Israel Aerospace Industries agreed to sell to India as part of a 2004 deal involving India, Israel and Russia. The deal with Israel was worth 1.1 billion dollars.

The AWACS involves the mounting of surveillance equipment on the top of Russian Ilyushin-76 aircraft.

Receipt of the AWACS will also provide a deterrent to any threat from China on India's eastern frontier, defence officials say.

The delivery of the remaining two AWACS is likely to be completed by the end of 2011, other government officials said.

Senior Indian air force officials said the first Phalcon will be deployed in the northern city of Agra, which is also home to India's mainstay Ilyushin military transport aircraft fleet.

"Agra suits us best because an AWACS taking off from that sector will have our western borders (with Pakistan) on its radar within minutes," :devil:an air force official said.

The Phalcon AWACS can simultaneously track nearly 250 flying objects within a radius of 800 kilometres (500 miles) and also has a "look-down" capability allowing it to monitor movements on the ground or at sea, officials say.:woot::what::azn:

The AWACS will especially be used to reinforce maritime security in the wake of the attacks last November on India's financial hub Mumbai, which killed 165 people, the air force official said. The attackers reached Mumbai by sea.

India will be the second Asian country after China to acquire the AWACS.

Israel replaced France in 2007 as India's second-largest arms supplier after Russia and is likely to grab the number one slot through a vast array of defence agreements it has already signed with New Delhi.

India gets first Awacs from Israel

Monday, May 25, 2009
WASHINGTON/NEW DELHI: India has got the first of the three Israeli airborne early warning command and control systems (Awacs) and the two remaining systems will be provided in next two years, becoming the first country in South Asia to have advanced Awacs, an Israeli paper reported on Sunday.

It is being considered the most advanced Awac system as the Phalcon provides tactical surveillance of airborne and surface targets, and the gathering of signal intelligence, the paper said. It is capable of tracking fighter planes, missiles and ground forces at a distance of 400 kilometers in any weather conditions. The system can identify all types of aircraft and was programmed to differentiate between friend and foe. The delivery of the long-range, high-performance and multi-sensor Phalcon system is part of a 1.1 billion dollar deal signed between India, Russia and Israel in January 2004.

As part of the delivery, IAI mounted the Phalcon systems on IL-76 aircraft supplied by Russia. Delivery of the last two Phalcon systems to India is slated for 2010. Ahead of the negotiations for the sale of the Phalcons to India, Israel obtained a green light from the United States for the transfer of incorporated American technology.

Israeli caution was borne of bitter experience, after a previous deal with China for the purchase of the Phalcon system was nixed by the US. As a result, Israel- China relations suffered a harsh blow and Israel was forced to compensate China to the tune of 375 million dollars.

Over the past several years, Israel has sold more than one billion dollars worth of defense systems to India on an annual basis. This has made India Israel’s leading customer in the global military supply market. Sales have included hardware and software, missiles for the Indian navy, as well as anti-aircraft and anti-missile systems based on the Green Pine radar.

The Green Pine, designed by Israel Aerospace Industries, is a transportable radar system designed to track dozens of ballistic missiles from long-ranges and in all weather conditions. In addition, Israel´s military industry firm has announced that it will establish five factories in India for the production of artillery shells.

The project is said to be worth 240 million dollars. In other fields related to defense, Israel and India have collaborated in military and aerospace research and development. In January 2008, for example, the Israel Space Agency and India´s Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) successfully launched an Israeli-made spy satellite from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota in southeastern India.

India - 25 MAY 2009

The first of the three Indian Air Force AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) platform arrived in India from Israel today. The giant IL-76 configured in its new avatar was escorted by three Mig-29 and Jaguar aircraft each that took off from an advance fighter airbase of South Western Air Command (SWAC).

The fighter formations caught up with the AWACS mid-air and escorted it as it entered the Indian FIR (Flight Information Region), till safe touchdown at the Jamnagar airbase, close to midday, today.

Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, SWAC, Air Marshal KD Singh, Air Defence Commander Air Vice Marshal P Singh and the AOC Jamnagar, Air Commodore C Hari Kumar and air warriors of the airbase welcomed the crew of the AWACS aircraft that included the Commanding Officer of the first AWACS squadron, Group Captain B Saju. Their maiden touchdown on Indian soil also marks the first landing of the AWACS in an IAF airbase.

“It was a great feeling to be escorted by our fighters and it feels really good to be back”, said Group Captain B Saju upon arrival. Flown by a full complement of IAF pilots belonging to the newly formed squadron from Ovda International airport, located in southern Israel, the aircraft undertook an eight-and-a-half hour’s flight skirting around several countries taking the aerial route over the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea before landing at Jamnagar.

The aircraft is slated to arrive at Palam airport tomorrow where an induction ceremony is scheduled on May 28. The AWACS are slated to operate from the Agra airbase under Central Air Command and frenetic preparations ahead of its first arrival to join the extended fleet of the IL-76 family are complete.

India today received the first of three Il-76 Phalcon airborne early warning and control aircraft it ordered in 2004 from Israel’s IAI.

Phalcon will enhance India's ability to detect aerial threats and serve as a platform for directing combat jets to targets.

India has also expressed interest in the Eitam, an intelligence-gathering plane also developed by IAI.

India and Israel are said to be in advanced talks for the purchase of several more Phalcon AWACS, which the IAF proposes to integrate with other air and ground assets.

Eventually all AWACS will be hooked up with the larger Indian RISAT spy satellite to be launched sometime later this year, or early next year.

It has many other capabilities including Electronic and Signal Intelligence gathering. Once operationalised alongwith the Operational Data Link (ODL), Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS) and the Air Force Net (AFNET), the IAF would have taken a definitive step towards Net Centric Operations.

With the induction of the AWACS, India will join a club of other nations - US, Russia, UK, China, France, Israel and Australia - that operate such a sophisticated system.
