Russia unveils new Armata tank for WW2 victory parade

Russia has unveiled a new-generation battle tank called Armata T-14 ahead of World War Two Victory Day celebrations on 9 May.

It is among several new weapons systems featuring in a vast parade on 9 May. It is 70 years since the Soviet and Allied armies defeated Nazi Germany in 1945.

The Russian defence ministry has posted photos of the new military hardware, taken during a rehearsal.

Most Western leaders will not go to Moscow because of the Ukraine crisis.

Russia's former World War Two allies - the UK, France and US - will be conspicuously absent from the event. The Red Square spectacle is expected to be the biggest military parade ever held.

  • 15,000 Russian troops
  • 1,300 foreign troops, including Serbian elite guards, Chinese guards of honour and Indian grenadiers
  • 200 armoured vehicles
  • 150 combat aircraft
'Fully robotic'
The Armata tank has an unmanned turret and a 125mm smooth-bore cannon that can fire guided missiles as well as shells.

The two-man crew has better protection than in existing Russian tanks. They will be housed in a reinforced chamber, away from the main gun, Russian media report.

S-400 surface-to-air missile systems will be on show
Zvezda TV, a Russian defence ministry channel, says the tank's chassis is adaptable as a platform for other weapons systems.

And Russia's RT news says the Armata could "evolve into a fully robotic battle vehicle".

Its computer technology, speed and manoeuvrability are said to be far superior to those of the T-90, the current mainstay of the Russian army.

Russia plans to bring in about 2,300 Armatas, starting in 2020, to replace Soviet-era tanks.

The new RS-24 intercontinental ballistic missile will also be in Red Square
Foreign snub
Russia's annexation of Crimea and help for rebels in eastern Ukraine triggered Western sanctions, targeting senior government officials, defence industries and the energy sector.

The Kremlin sent dozens of invitations to foreign leaders, but many will stay away from the 9 May parade.

Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel will not be there for 9 May, but will visit the following day.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier plans to travel to Volgograd - formerly Stalingrad - on 7 May. Nazi troops were defeated there in one of the bloodiest battles in history.

Chinese and North Korean leaders will be among foreign dignitaries at the 9 May parade.

Serbia - a candidate for EU membership - sent an elite guards unit to Moscow on Monday. They will be among several foreign contingents in the march-past.

Greece's left-wing Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras plans to attend the parade.

don't you think sir they are one of the shabby marchers, they are brave soldiers, but i think better looking and marching ceremonial contingents should have been sent like the ITBP or the sikh regiments, what do you say?

Indian military contingent to march at Moscow’s Red Square on May 9

grenadiers_regiment_759.jpg

A 70-member marching contingent of the Grenadiers Regiment from the Indian Army will take part in 2015 Moscow Victory Day Parade at Red Square on 9 May, Ministry of Defence has announced. Raised in November 1779, the Grenadiers Regiment has won six Victoria Crosses before 1947, and three Param Vir Chakras since India’s independence.

This will be the first time an Indian military contingent will be participating in the Moscow Victory Day celebrations. This year’s parade marks the 70th anniversary of the day of Nazi Germany’s surrender to the erstwhile Soviet Union in 1945.

The first Victory Day celebrations in Moscow were held in 1945 but apart from the 20th and 40th anniversaries in 1965 and 1985, Victory Day celebrations in the Soviet Union did not feature a military parade. This tradition of an annual military parade at Red Square started in 1995. The 2010 Victory Day marked the first time that foreign soldiers joined Russian forces on Red Square for the parade. Among other countries, troops from the US, the UK, France, Canada and Poland had participated in the parade in 2010.

With more than 26 international leaders likely to attend, the 2015 Victory Day Parade is expected to be one of the biggest to be held in Russian history. As per Russian news agency TASS, President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, will also take part in the Moscow celebrations. Because of the recent annexation of Crimea from Ukraine by Russia, none of the Western leaders who attended in 2010 is expected to attend this year’s parade. German President Angela Merkel is however scheduled to visit Moscow on 10 May, a day after the Victory Day parade.

It is only in recent years that India has started sending its military contingent to foreign parades. During the fiftieth anniversary of Japan’s surrender in the Second World War in Hawai in 1995, Indian government refused to participate as it didn’t wish to be associated with Churchill’s war. To represent the Indian soldiers, Pakistan, which didn’t even exist in 1945, was invited and honoured for its role in Japan’s defeat at the commemoration ceremony.

In 2009, a contingent from the Maratha Light Infantry Regiment had marched down Champs Elysees during the Bastille Day celebrations in France.

Thanks for correcting, wrong image was used at my source 'Sputnik' :(. Must admit that I am not good in recognizing Indian army units :P.

[Edited the above post ]

We do insist on dressing our soldiers with Maroon berets? It does not look right.

I dont think it is this unit. I thought most Indian units wore maroon berets?

No, the vast majority of military units wearing maroon are airborne forces and/or units that are qualified for parachuting into combat, which is a custom you can see all around the world-

The Indians fought for their British masters during WW2, like slaves.
