JAKARTA (The Jakarta Post/Asia News Network): Indonesian airlines have expressed optimism that passenger figures on domestic routes are on track to get back to the pre-pandemic level in the first quarter of 2024, nearly a year faster than previously estimated.

Indonesian National Aviation Association (INACA) secretary-general Bayu Susanto said the complete recovery of the domestic aviation industry, initially expected for late 2024, was now projected to take place as early as the first quarter of next year, assuming “the current trend persists”.

International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimates released on Dec 6 see the Asia Pacific (APAC) airline industry reaching the 2019 level in 2024. Statistics Indonesia (BPS) recorded 52.56 million domestic flight passengers in 2022, which is 68.5 per cent of the 76.68 million passengers transported in 2019.

“The challenges for the recovery of domestic routes [are] high interest rates, which impact the price for plane charters, the rupiah-dollar exchange rate and the high fuel price,” Bayu told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.

He elaborated that airlines’ financial condition had been deeply impacted by the pandemic and that the effect was still felt until now, hampering the recovery.
He went on to say that the waiting line for aircraft maintenance and the slow movement of spare parts in supply chains also impacted the recovery pace.

For international routes, Indonesian airlines are also looking at faster growth than previously estimated, with INACA now projecting the full recovery in the third quarter of next year – faster than the initial forecast of 2025.

Some 1.08 million passengers flew on international flights with Indonesian carriers in December 2022, still a far cry from the 1.72 million logged in December 2019, according to data from BPS. To bump up the number, the Indonesian government has been actively lobbying China to allow for more direct flights, as the once-a-week charter from Shenzhen is currently the only route connecting the two countries.

In addition, the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry revealed that it was also eyeing India and Russia to realise more direct flights, given that demand from the two countries was high.
Garuda Indonesia is even more positive for its own recovery. Garuda CEO Irfan Setiaputra told The Jakarta Post on Monday (Feb 13) that he expected traffic on the flag carrier’s domestic routes to “turn normal in 2023”, while he agreed with INACA’s forecast for the recovery of international travel.

“[It is on track], but we need to remain ‘conscious’, because we need to pay attention to whether passenger growth stays true to our estimates,” said Irfan.

Echoing Irfan’s estimates, Indonesia AirAsia CEO Veranita Yosephine told the Post on Tuesday that 2023 was “an exciting time” for her company, as it planned to increase its fleet to 32 aircraft and projected to reach the pre-pandemic level by the end of the year.

“In general, we believe that the future of the airline industry in Indonesia is looking positive. [...] I believe the Indonesian airline industry will be able to recover by the end of the year and [get] back to the pre-pandemic level,” said Veranita.

United Nations aviation body the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) predicts a full recovery in global demand, which does not necessarily reflect in actual passenger figures, this year.

The ICAO’s “advanced big data analytics” boldly projected demand on most routes to reach the pre-pandemic level in the first quarter of this year and lie 3 per cent above the 2019 figure by year-end.

“Airlines are expected to return to operating profitability in the last quarter of 2023, after three consecutive years of losses,” reads the ICAO’s press statement released on Feb 8.

The IATA projects the industry to post a profit of merely US$4.7 billion in 2023, which would be only 0.6 per cent of the industry’s total revenue of $779 billion.

Meanwhile, the industry scored a net profit of $26.4 billion in 2019, leaving a lot of ground to cover to return to the pre-pandemic level in terms of earnings. The ICAO estimates that passenger traffic reached 74 per cent of the pre-pandemic level in 2022.

The tourism industry is one of the industries that has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic since 2020. After three years, the tourism industry is showing a gradual recovery.

Room occupancy rates in several areas have also shown good signs of recovery with several regions recording a pre-pandemic level. The number of tourists visiting Indonesia has also increased gradually, although it is still far from the 2019 level.

However, the recovery of tourist visits is also in line with the recovery of several neighboring countries, such as Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia, which in 2022 recorded between 25 and 30 percent from pre-pandemic level. There are several positive factors that will drive tourism recovery in the future.

Liputan6.com, Jakarta - PT Regio Aviasi Industri (RAI) is currently developing an original domestic aircraft, the R-80. The investment value used to build the aircraft is over US$ 1 billion.

"US$ 1 billion and above, between US$ 1.1 billion-1.5 billion," said Commissioner of PT Regio Aviasi Industri (RAI) Ilham Habibie, at the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) Jakarta, Wednesday (11/10/2017 ).

He said the funds were used for design purposes up to flight testing. "Development costs are what we pay engineers to make designs. For airplanes, raw materials are assembled into planes," he explained.

The process of making airplanes is very complicated, for example, for design. Making a design is not just a drawing, but also testing.

"We can't make an airplane if we don't have a design, and it's not just a drawing, it's tested. And there are more than a million pictures. If we break down a lot. Parts (components) if you look at the plane are broken down into 1 million parts," he explained.

Not only that, for the manufacture of aircraft also have to go through various stages. Among other things, prototypes to flight tests.

"And all the drawings, and all are calculated. You can imagine why US$ 1 billion, and not all of it is for the engine, there is testing, making prototypes, making certification, flight tests," he said.

Previously, Ilham explained that the R-80 would be realized in 2019 and handed over to customers in 2021. Currently, there are orders for 155 aircraft.

The R-80 aircraft has a number of advantages. Among them, the passenger capacity is more, namely 80 to 90 passengers. In addition, the R-80 is 15 percent more efficient in fuel consumption than its French-Italian ATR 72-600 competitor.

Jakarta - Two years ago, precisely in 2017, the Indonesian people began donating to help realize a nation-made aircraft, namely the R80 turbo prop type aircraft, the dream of the 3rd President of the Republic of Indonesia BJ Habibie.

Until now, the R80 aircraft project is still waiting for funding from investors. At that time the aircraft developed by PT Regio Aviasi Industri (RAI) raised funds through crowdfunding platform kitabisa.com.

At that time, RAI targeted to raise IDR 5 billion from crowdfunding in Kitabisa. In the midst of mourning over the death of BJ Habibie, Wednesday (11/9/2019), the campaign was again crowded. Indonesian people seem unwilling to bury the dream of the father of technology.

Monitored by detikINET, Thursday (12/9), the funds collected have reached Rp 9,262,172,897. A sense of enthusiasm and pride burned again, as can be seen from the various comments of enthusiasm and hope from donors displayed on the page.

The funds donated by donors also vary from Rp 20,000 to Rp 500 million. Prayers and hope continue to flow to be able to realize

"For you habibie.... Glory to Indonesian Aerospace" "

May Allah SWT provide ease and smoothness for the team and all involved in the initial launch of R80. Aamiin""

May Mr. Habibie's ideals be achieved! What an inspiring figure of Indonesia""

God willing, the Indonesian aerospace industry will develop. Aamiin" "hopefully Indonesia can continue to make and produce its own best aircraft""

Congratulations Mr. B.J Habibie.. Hopefully your wish will be quickly realized to fly the R80 aircraft with the people of Indonesia."

"Hopefully soon realized the ideals of the Father of Technology Indonesia and all children of the nation" "Although my grandfather is gone, but I want to realize his dream even if it only helps a little but I am sure that my grandfather is proud of this" "My past is mine, your past is yours, but the future is ours." -Eyang Habibie-"

"Hopefully it can be realized and if it has materialized I can take an r2 plane. amen."

"Hopefully it will be a charity for the progress of Indonesia'

"Bismillah hopefully can help even if you can only get a little result from playing games"

Reporting from various sources, the R80 aircraft is BJ Habibie's design for short to medium haul flights capable of carrying 80-80 passengers with dimensions of 90.32 meters long with a wingspan of 3.30 meters and a height of 5.8 meters.

This aircraft can also accelerate at a maximum speed of 5 knots or about 330 km per hour. The aircraft made by PT Regio Aviasi Industri (RAI) is based on the baseline master plan R611, the R80 prototype will be flown in 80 passengers configuration.

After passing the certification process, the R80 is planned to be mass-produced in 2025. Public support is urgently needed, so that the baseline master plan for R80 development can proceed as planned. RAI explained, the pure Indonesian-made R80 aircraft was architected by BJ Habibie, sponsored by RAI, and done by PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI).

RAI itself is a company engaged in the design, development, and manufacturing of aircraft founded by BJ Habibie with his eldest son Ilham Akbar Habibie. RAI specifically developed the R80 aircraft, to answer the needs of regional air transportation in Indonesia and the international market.

For those of you who want to become donors, you can access Kitabisa.com/pesawatR80. Public involvement in crowdfunding in addition to helping the preliminary design activities of the R80 aircraft, is also a form of campaign so that the wider public knows the efforts to develop the national aerospace industry made by the nation's children.

More realistic time table for R 80 program from LAPAN.

N 245 program is pretty sure to be abandoned (at least until the next 5 years), R 80 program seems has more chance to be seriously developed and funded.

The broader world picture reveals that Indonesia has become a burgeoning force in the region, and that dynamic holds true of its rapidly growing contribution to global aviation. According to IATA, Indonesia is set to become the fourth-largest air travel market in the world by 2030.

As the world’s largest island nation with 6,000 inhabited islands, Indonesia boasts a surprising 34 international airports and over 200 domestic airports. On top of this, the government is planning to open a further 5 airports!

Enjoying the largest economy in South East Asia, Indonesia’s status as a key growth nation in the global aviation market makes it a sector to watch carefully in the near future.

Ilham Habibie: R80 Aircraft Design Has Entered the Finalization Stage

Ilham Akbar Habibie (Doc. AKURAT.CO)

AKURAT.CO Aviation expert Ilham Akbar Habibie revealed that his R80 aircraft design project was almost complete. Currently, it is still in the stage of finalizing the design of the aircraft.

He explained, the finalization of the aircraft design is still waiting for the most appropriate choice of technology, so it is not outdated. Moreover, the R80 aircraft is the latest generation of N250 type aircraft created by his father, Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie.

Nevertheless, he hopes that the choice of technology used by the R80 aircraft will soon be realized.

"If we make it (R80) we haven't, but the design can be said to be almost complete. But at this time we have not decided to really officially finalize the design," he said when chatting with AKURAT.CO at the Ainun Habibie Library, South Jakarta, Thursday (22/9/2022).

He revealed, there are several things that he thinks need to be carefully considered before launching the final design of the R80 aircraft. This is very important so that the aircraft can later be used for a long time.

He admitted that the choice of future-oriented technology is certainly not easy. There are doubts about the ability to read future commercial aircraft technology options.

"And that's what makes us doubt when we make the final design can be hybrid can be full electric which may not be able to be hydrogen fuel or can use sustainable aviation fuel," he said.

He acknowledged there are many choices of commercial aircraft industry technologies that are dominant in the future.

"We don't know yet. We have to wait and see, but I think in a few years' time it will be seen. Because even if we make mistakes, we must realize we make them for decades to come," he said.

He added that the choice of aircraft technology must be thought about from the beginning. The most important thing is about the sustainability of the aircraft made by him. For information, the N250 aircraft has a capacity of 50 passengers. While R80 is an aircraft with a capacity of 80 passengers in accordance with the wishes of travelers using planes.

"If we make planes, we have to imagine for the next few decades it is still valid. Because we have the opportunity to create a new platform, we are now paying attention from the beginning to use technology that pays attention to these environmentally friendly aspects, "he said. []
