Invoking Article 6 to pit military against civilians, hurt Nawaz, says Sethi
August 08, 2009
Daily Times Monitor
LAHORE: If Article 6 of the constitution is invoked against former president Pervez Musharraf, it will pit the civilian government against the military and eventually hurt Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif more than President Asif Ali Zardari, Daily Times Editor-in-chief Najam Sethi has said.
He told viewers during the Tonight with Najam Sethi TV show on Dunya News that it was possible that a pro-Musharraf general could impose martial law in the future. If this were to occur, he said, Nawaz would likely have to stay abroad for another 10 years.
Sethi said Nawaz was still waiting to become prime minister, adding the PML-N chief had made a good political decision by demanding to bring a resolution against Musharraf. This decision would make it more difficult for Musharraf to participate in general election, he said. The army, bureaucracy and former cabinet members would also have to be included if any action were initiated against Musharraf, he said, adding the government could not afford to sack the military leadership and bureaucracy to bring revolutionary steps against the former president.
The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the PML-N would not get unanimous approval for a resolution against the former president in the presence of PML-Quaid and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, he said. He said Musharraf would never be treated like former Chilean dictator General Augusto Pinochet, who was placed under house arrest following the end of his dictatorship, due to certain international guarantees.
