Is China Communist? No.

by Andrew Bast

Pop Quiz! One question, and it seems simple. Q) Is China Communist? A) Yes, there are more than a billion commies living the Marxist utopian ideal in the East. B) No, they’re unforgiving, shrewd, money-hungry capitalists like the rest of us.

Correct answer: B.

China’s no more red than Michael Moore telling his accountant to buy low and sell high.

“China is only communist in the most limited sense,” Suzanne Ogden, a China scholar and professor at Northeastern University told The Inquirer. “There is a one-party system of rule. Apart from that, there’s no pursuit of communist ideology or serious pursuit of Marxism. There are a lot of wealthy people in China.”

CommiespullToday, China’s no different than France, Germany, or Great Britain when they controlled major industries like telecommunications, Ogden explained. As it stands, some Chinese industry is still socialized, but especially in the last ten years, the party has relinquished even more of that dominance.

No commies in China? You’ve got to be kidding. Actually, wealthy Chinese are no joke. As the unleashed Chinese economy surges, an affluent class has emerged—much like a hillbilly who’s won an all-expenses paid life in the social circles of the Upper East Side.

While China, the world’s most populous nation with 1.3 billion people, still enforces a one-child policy, families raking in dough are spending accordingly. That one kid (imagine a country full of only children!) could be enrolled in an after-school junior M.B.A. program by the age of five. Horse-riding lessons, dancing classes and high tea. The Hamptons in Beijing.

There is a seedy underbelly to the capitalist enterprise. Swaths of the population lose social services in exchange for those horse-riding lessons. Mao’s Cultural Revolution in 1960s and 70s produced a 90% literate populace, and no worker went without healthcare. This is history.

To put it simply, the western half of the country has caught the short end of the stick. Work centers, now privatized, have gone bankrupt and are without medical services. Farmers can’t pay school fees for their children. Ogden says it's going “very poorly.” The government is working on the problem—eradicating school fees, for instance—but the communal ideal is undoubtedly a vanquished reality.

Since Deng Xiaoping commenced economic reforms in 1978, the Chinese economy has grown at a staggering 9% annually. China entered the World Trade Organization in 2001, decidedly signaling the former communist state’s transformation into a capitalist superpower.

Perhaps Deng addressed the coming transformation decades ago when he said, “Doesn’t matter if the cat is white or black, as long as it catches the mouse.”
Is China Communist? No.

I am really annoyed by some people keep calling China communist. I think that you know which kind of people I am talking about. This annoyance comes especially when there are underprivileged people cannot afford to go to hospital, and don't have the money to pay for education of their children in China. Even though reform is on the way, but it is not going to be good enough as a communist state. Last time I checked, those two services in some hardcore communist countries such as Cuba and DPRK are free for everyone.

Thanks buddy!!!
Its just a forum man... Dont scold me like this :)

You are doing this all wrong by proving China is not communist. You should research and post about democracy then you can judge how communist is China. Thanks!!!

Apart from its one party political system, there is no communist ideology in China. However one party authoritarian government is not unique of communism. If you read the other post of Indian democracy loses to Chinese efficiency - by 160 votes, you will understand that what China has proven is that capitalism doesn't require democracy.

China: Capitalism Doesn't Require Democracy
Does Capitalism Need Democracy to Survive?

Who is questioning that, you are changing the conversation now by including Capitalism. The term la se fair applies universially.

In order to make your bold statement of China not being communist, first you need to understand the meaning of democracy. The more you will read and understand, the more china becomes communist.

Thanks!!!!

And what do YOU know about real democracy? It's certainly not defined by the right to vote.

What the ****???? You mean "Laissez-faire?" No Government in this world does this.

Democracy is overrated!!! Even Democracy in the US is eroding.

In order to make your bold statement of China not being communist, first you need to understand the meaning of democracy.

In your case you need to understand Communism and Democracy. If you're educated and understand China as it is TODAY, you would never call China a communist country.

Go to West Bengal then go to Shanghai or Beijing then you will understand the evolution of the Chinese government.

What I know about real democracy is that there is no such thing as real democracy!!! It is republic. Learn that first.

Thanks

How so? Did one person in America proclaim himself as a King!!

Why not? Just because they reform there economic system does not make them non-communist.

You know what is the flaw in your logic?

Let me break it down for you. In order for communism to work in a society, its government has to be an one party system to implement it. However one party system is not limited to communism. Democracy on the other hand need capitalism to survive, but vice verse is not true as stated in China: Capitalism Doesn't Require Democracy

Well, maybe we’ve been a bit naive. It’s true that democracy needs capitalism. Try to come up with the name of a single democracy in the world that doesn’t have a capitalist economy. For democracy to function there must be centers of power outside of government. Capitalism decentralizes economic power, and thereby provides the private ground in which democracy can take root.

But China shows that the reverse may not be true -- capitalism doesn’t need democracy. Capitalism’s wide diffusion of economic power offers enough incentive for investors to take risks with their money. But, as China shows, capitalism doesn’t necessarily provide enough protection for individuals to take risks with their opinions.

What China has right now is an one party system authoritarian government with a capitalist economy. I don't see any conflicts here, so please enlighten me where is the contradiction.

Now let's exam the definition of Communism here.
Communism (from Latin: communis = "common") is a socioeconomic structure and political ideology that promotes the establishment of an egalitarian, classless, stateless society based on common ownership and control of the means of production and property in general. In political science, the term "communism" is sometimes used to refer to communist states, a form of government in which the state operates under a one-party system and declares allegiance to Marxism-Leninism or a derivative thereof, even if the party does not actually claim that it has already developed communism.
If you can find any trace of what I have highlighted in the above in both economical and political realities in China, then we can debate about whether China is a communist state. Don't be surprised when you can not find anyone know what Marxism-Leninism is nowadays in China.

I can argue all day on this subject, but lack of time I am going to make it quick for you from your example.

and declares allegiance to Marxism-Leninism or a derivative thereof, even if the party does not actually claim that it has already developed communism.

See the correlation on the things I have highlighted.

Thanks.

China is politically Fascist, That would be the best definition to describe PRC, Your free to buy what ever you want, but your not free to run for office or vote for office other then a member of the ruling party.

Democracy is for the weaklings, and it only weakens the society.

As for US, don't be so naive here. Under the facade of democracy, the US is still run by various interests group, it really doesn't matter who people vote for(president or their representatives), things are not really going to change much. Only difference is how well they can fool the people.

China is a classical fascist state at present. It practices a politico-economic system most similar to that practiced by Germany under the Third Reich, national socialism. It does not have enough private ownership or democratic freedoms to be considered capitalist (like the US or Japan) or democratic socialist, comparable to current European norms.
