Well we have seen a lot of great aircrafts from European designers for all these decades but none of them wanted to pursue designing a 5th generation aircraft. The brits had the BAe systems, the German GmBH, Italian Aliena Aeronautica...why not people just ditch the F 35 and go ahead with their own 5th generation design?

Dont know whether F 35 will destroy their indigenous industry or not .But
F 35 would become another success story like F 16.No doubt in that.

Why is Europe not going for a 5th gen fighter
@mike2000 surely it's not like you guys lack the capability
considering the huge amount of money that's gone into the F 35 program, it could be that the US's allies are playing nice and have decided they'll just buy and operate F 35s

F35 is going to serve as NATO 5th Generation standard air craft.
It will form cream of European countries. Typhoon,Rafale.Gripen will serve as European Air crafts as 4.5th Generation air craft................None of the nation in Europe has announced that they will develop 5th Generation air craft. France however intend to jump directly to 6th Generation but it is not confirmed yet

But still it is now or never for Europe if they don't develop a 5th gen fighter they will fall behind

hard to say, I think for the foreseeable future 5th gen fighters are going to remain in an elite users club and as such 4/4.5 gen are set to continue as quite potent platforms for the rest... and then there's the cost factor.

Uncle Sam is a notorious for destroying it's allies Industrial capabilities when it seems they would challenge Uncle's product Example IAI Lavi,CF-105 Arrow and last but not least Indian MMRCA deal which uncle wants to get, because it's a huge deal.

Yeah but the sooner Europe starts research on 5th gen platforms the better it will be becuz sooner or later they will need 5th gen platforms

Apart from China there are no other projects that are hyper active and fast moving.

Russia has slowed down with SU-35 and PAK-FA, US is down with F-35, EF is also moving slow, nothing much on fighter projects around the world like Saab, Indonasian, Japanese, Turkish projects.

Because of the Eurocanards, these fighters are pretty new designs, which will remain in service for decades and most of them even in production beyond 2020. That alone makes another European fighter project not important, but that doesn't mean Europe is not developing 5th gen capabilities and aircrafts. BAE, SAAB, Dassault..., all have already developed and tested stealth UCAV prototypes, which are meant to operate besides the Eurocanards in future and will keep the European industry state of the art too and that possibly at lower costs than the F35 program or developing another stealth fighter. It also gets more and more evident, that a fleet that consist only stealth fighters or aircrafts is not a useful or affordable for most countries. There is a reason why the F22 never saw actual war experience, because in most NATO operations you don't need such fighters and the trend is even going the other way around to low cost, limited capable armed trainers and armed drones for CAS roles. The next stealth fighter projects (manned or unmanned needs to be seen by then) from Europe will be aimed to replace some of the Eurocanards around 2030, till then the F35 and Turkey's projects will remain the only option in and around Europe.
