ISI agent held in Bagdogra-Kolkata -Cities-The Times of India

SILIGURI: The CID on late Wednesday night arrested a Pakistani national, suspected to be an ISI agent, from a hotel in Bagdogra on the outskirts of Siliguri.

CID officials raided the hotel after a tip-off and nabbed Abid Khan alias Samir Ahmed Sagar. Some documents and maps showing details of army installations in north Bengal were recovered from him. He could not produce a passport or a visa.

A Siliguri subdivisional court has remanded him in 12 days' custody. There was trouble in court when some Shiv Sena activists attacked Abid. Policemen managed to rescue him.

Interrogation has revealed that Abid is a resident of Keru village under Bhawan Langra post office in Pakistan's Punjab province. He had been to Suncheri in Nepal, from where he sneaked into India about a week ago via Kakarvitta in eastern Nepal's Jhapa district, police say.

In the past week, Abid visited several places in Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling, from where he probably obtained the documents, which had information on the Binnaguri cantonment and the Hasimara air base. Sleuths believe Abid has developed a network in the region to get regular information on the defence installations.

According to reports, Abid had come to Nepal three months ago after being given the job of collecting information on Indian defence installations in north Bengal. The Pakistan embassy in Kathmandu was allegedly giving support to Abid on his mission.

Reports from the Union home ministry say that the Pakistan embassy in Kathmandu has not only hosted several meetings of terrorist and insurgent groups but also acted as a centre for circulation of forged Indian currency. The embassy has been a major hub for ISI activities.

ISI has reportedly joined hands with the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), an intelligence wing of Bangladesh, with an aim to create an independent Islamistan comprising the Indian states of Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura and the districts of Malda, Murshidabad, South Dinajpur, North Dinajpur, Jalpaiaguri and Cooch Behar in West Bengal
