Explosion on Bulgaria tourist bus 'transporting Israelis'

There are unconfirmed reports that three people have been killed in an explosion on a bus carrying Israeli tourists in Bulgaria.

Local media in the resort of Burgas claim the bus was outside the Sarafovo airport and was packed with Israelis.

Bulgarian radio said three people had been killed. It is thought at least 20 have been injured.

The explosion is thought to have occurred at around 6pm local time.

Burgas is the second largest resort on the country's Black Sea coast. It is popular with Israeli tourists and is home to a Chabad centre. Israeli teens are known to flock to the resort for their summer holidays.

Israel has previously warned Bulgaria of the threat posed by Hizbollah.

At least three people were killed in an attack on three Israeli tour buses in at the Sarafovo International Airport in the Bulgarian vacation city of Bourgas. According to initial reports, up to three tour buses were attacked, possibly by a suicide bomber .

Israel Police and the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry confirmed at least 20 people were injured in the attack.

The plane from Tel Aviv to Burgas landed at 4:50 p.m. local time, and its passengers boarded buses to take them to the Globus Hotel. The explosion occurred 40 minutes later, at 5:30 p.m.

The Bourgas airport was closed and all flights were redirected to Varna.

In January, the Foreign Ministry warned of a possible terror plot against Israelis in Bulgaria, urging Israeli to take extra precautions when traveling there. It also asked the Bulgarian government to implement extra security measures to ensure that Israeli tourists remain safe.

The bombing comes in the wake of a thwarted terror attack on Israeli targets in Cyprus last weekend. Bourgas is the second largest city on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. It has become a very popular destination for Israeli tourists over the past few years, in the wake of Turkey’s dramatic break with Israel.
