Nope, it’s not The Onion.

A few days ago some 300 Holocaust survivors placed an ad in the New York Timescondemning the massacre in Gaza. My colleague from Local Call, John Brown, has selected a few of the responses on Facebook that Israelis posted in response to the ad.

I’ve translated a few from John’s selection:

David Cohen: Those aren’t Holocaust survivors those are probably collaborators with the Nazis.

Shmulik Halphon: He’s invited to go back to Auschwitz.

Itzik Levy: These are survivors who were Kapos. Leftist traitors. That’s why they live abroad and not in the Jewish State.

Vitali Guttman: Enough, they should die already. They survived the Holocaust only to do another Holocaust to Israel in global public opinion?

Meir Dahan: No wonder Hitler murdered 6 million Jews because of people like you you’re not even Jews you’re disgusting people a disgrace to humanity and so are your offspring you are trash.

Asher Solomon: It’s a shame Hitler didn’t finish the job.

Katy Morali: Holocaust survivors who think like this are invited to go die in the gas chambers.

Yafa Ashraf: Shitty Ashkenazis you are the Nazis.

This is an interesting comment. Is there a perception that Ashkenazis are more liberal/pacifist, and Sephardi, Mizrahi, etc. are more nationalist?

Every country has it's trash.
We've seen people supporting Hitler in the name of Gaza too.
It's better to ignore them. In the end, they'll be suffering.

That one puzzled me to,i thought the Ashkenazis were the hard core right wingers.

Same thought I had.

Actually apparently it's the Askhenazis that are the most liberal and the most socialists among the Jewish Israelis. I was surprised by this but when you think about it then it is not really strange. Why? Well, the Mizrahi/Sephardic Jews are often newer arrivals, were in general poorer and most important were majority Arab Jewish. So their was suspicion here. In terms of conservatism then it is not really strange that your average Moroccan, Yemeni, Iraqi, Syrian etc. Jew is brought up in a more conservative environment than your Russian/Polish Jew that was shaped by communism and European values. When it comes to nationalism then Mizrahi Jews often have to show their nationalism to the Askhenazis due to their background and even physical look. Because honestly I don't think that any Askhenazi or any other person for that matter would be able to pick out an Palestinian and an Israeli Jew from an Arab background from each other if you saw them on the street in neutral clothing.

I think that this is the explanation. But it's correct, from my understanding at least, that Zionism itself and the earliest Israeli nationalists etc. were Askhenazi Jews and they are also the main "founders" of Israel.

I was surprised to learn this as well but then I made my own research. After all you have to know your enemies.;)

Askhenazis are socially/culturally liberal. But, when it comes to politics/Israel they are hardcore right wing.

I think we have it wrong. The 'Yafa Ashraf' guy is a Arab Jew who is condemning the 'Askhenazi' Jews for wishing death against holocaust survivors.

Correct. I mean nationalism is pretty strong in Israel from what I know about. They are at least right wing when it comes to Palestine.

Yes, probably. The internet is really insane when it comes to stupid posts and often you can't discuss which those people at all. It seems that the Israeli regime, when it launches those offensives once every 2 years or so, wants to create a rise in nationalism. Although I have personally noticed Jewish criticism (individuals) toward the Israeli regime.

Honestly speaking then I believe that both people are tired of this conflict and want it to end but the problem is the price of peace. Correct me if I am wrong. I don't follow Israeli society etc. as much as you do and don't know Jews that much aside from 2-3 individuals or so.

What Shoah? The slavic converted askhenaz JEWS were exterminated by Hitler so the real JEWS can create Israel

Israeli side isn't that tired anymore since they don't pay a price for any of their actions. It used to be different. Sadly, majority of Israeli side finds it convenient to ignore this opportunity for two state solution. And younger generations on both sides have more energy but also in some cases coexistence. Although Israeli's are decided upon the West Bank, they see it as a part of Israel.

Not going to change anytime soon but the conflict can only take a good direction from now on in my opinion.

Yes, that's correct. I read a book by a Mizrahi journalist, Rachel Shabi, and even though she herself is a left-winger, she agreed that, in Israel, when you describe someone as "leftist", there's a silent implication that the person is Ashkenazi. And though she wanted her book to refute some Mizrahi stereotypes, including that the Mizrahim are less sophisticated and more virulent in their politcs, you still get the feeling from her book that this segment of the Israeli population is more nationalistic and war-mongering. She admits that, in polls, the Mizrahim come out as even more pro-settlements than the Ashkenazim, even though it's the Ashkenazim who most benefit from Israeli land theft (70% of settlers are Ashkenazi vs 50% of the total Israeli Jewish population).

Are you a Mizhari Jew? That would be really interesting if we have an fellow Arab Jew here. :)

jews have distorted faces and people who are friends with them also have distorted faces.

the more they spread corruption in the land the more distortion becomes visible

look at the lanat(curse) and phitkaar(negativity/repulsiveness/obnoxiousness) on this man's face

his eyes have shrinked and his eyebrows have distorted

when evil jews grow old they start resembling witches and sorcerers

That one puzzled me to,i thought the Ashkenazis were the hard core right wingers.

A segment of the Ashkenazi population - the recent immigrants from the former Soviet Union - are thought to be that way: more right-wing, more warmongering, more opposed to compromise in the name of peace, than the population as a whole. But in general lines, things are as I described to Raphael: left-wing is equated with Ashkenazi, right-wing with Mizrahi. In fact, many reports in Israel make a distinction between Russian immigrants and veteran Ashkenazim because, despite a common racial background, there are many sociological differences between these two groups - the Russians, like the Mizrahim, feel more excluded, for example, and therefore don't share the political preferences of the Ashkenazi mainstream.

Back to the Mizrahim, it's worth mentioning that the first time the Likud was elected to power, it was by riding a wave of discontent among the Mizrahim, who felt discriminated against by the Labor establishment. The Mizrahi journalist I mentioned to Raphael, Rachel Shabi, brings up the curious fact that, in contrast with most world countries, in Israel it's the left-wing that is considered elitist, pro-establishment, and the right-wing that is populist. She in effect suggests that the Mizrahi adherence to right-wing nationalism is due to the fact that, when the Mizrahim felt most excluded in Israel's history - in the first three decades of that country's existence - it was only the right-wing parties that paid them any attention - and not attention in the negative way, in the form of, for example, police repression against Mizrahi protesters, which was how Labor was dealing with racial unrest in the 70s. Such was Likud's empathy for the Mizrahi underclass, that many even believed Menachem Begin to be a Morrocan (he wasn't, he was a Pole).

I'm not, I don't have any sort of Middle Eastern background.

They are, that is a strange comment it might just be racial tension between different groups coming to the forefront.
