Washington: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi may pose a challenge to Congress's young scion Rahul Gandhi in India's next parliamentary elections, Time magazine said.

Modi, who figured on the cover page of the latest issues of the Asia edition of the prestigious magazine, which hit the stands yesterday could put up a challenge to Gandhi in particular after the recently held Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, where Congress fared poorly.

"With two years left before the next national election in 2014, Congress hopes its young scion, Sonia's son Rahul, will refresh the party, but a resounding loss in a recent state election makes him look vulnerable," Time said.

"Modi Means Business. But can he lead India?" says the headline on the coverage which has a blown up picture of a serious looking bearded Modi who has ruled Gujarat for more than a decade now.

"Modi, 61, is perhaps the only contender with the track record and name recognition to challenge Rahul Gandhi," says the cover story by Jyoti Thottam, which includes an interview of Modi.

"Many Indians recoil at any mention of a man whose name is indelibly linked to Gujarat's brutality of 2002; choosing him as India's leader would seem a rejection of the country's tradition of political secularism and a sure path to increased tension with Muslim Pakistan, where he is reviled," it says.

"But when others think of someone who can bring India out of the mire of chronic corruption and inefficiency ? of a firm, no-nonsense leader who will set the nation on a course of development that might finally put it on par with China ? they think of Modi," Time says.

The cover story highlights the achievement of Gujarat under his Chief Minister ship. "What's certain is that during his 10 years in power in Gujarat, the state has become India's most industrialised and business-friendly territory, having largely escaped the land conflicts and petty corruption that often paralyze growth elsewhere in the nation," it said.

"Gujarat's USD 85 billion economy may not be the largest in India, but it has prospered without the benefit of natural resources, fertile farmland, a big population center like Mumbai or a lucrative high-tech hub like Bangalore. Gujarat's success, even Modi's detractors acknowledge, is a result of good planning, exactly what so much of India lacks," the magazine said.

But Time does point out towards the 2002 riots, the victims of which are yet to get justice. "In the decade since that carnage, dozens of individual rioters have been convicted, but the state has never had to answer accusations that it failed to halt the violence: no top officials have been held accountable or had conspiracy charges proved against them," it said.

"One case naming Modi remains open, a notorious incident in which nearly 200 people were killed while taking shelter in the home of a Muslim politician, Ehsan Jafri, whose desperate calls to government officials for protection were ignored.

Modi denies ever hearing from Jafri, who was dismembered and killed. If this case also ends without any charges being brought, the last remaining obstacle between Modi and national office will fall," the weekly wrote.

Before that, Modi will have to face some stiff resistance from inside the BJP and NDA itself.

People like Nitish Kumar are not even willing to share the dias with Modi.

rahul may not have done anything but I've seen what modi has done, and I'm not happy. I hope that murderer stays the f away from delhi.
I hope nda plays nitish kumar or someone else. I really dont want a fractured mandate but if nitish kumar was put forth i would vote for the nda.
If they play modi, the muslims in the general assembly wont vote bps or sp or anyone else. Expect, maybe even a congress majority.
The bjp knows that despite the popularity of modi among their base, the rest of the country dosent feel the same way about thatbutcher.

NDA will not allow Modi to campaign together but Modi may campaign BJP only areas. BJP will lose again if it projects Modi as PM. It has made lot of effort in losing its untouchability. I dont think they will repeat the isolation of 90s.

Ahem, rest of the country doesn't share your views about Modi either. Twitter would be an eye opener for you.

Although, I do accept that Modi will find it next to impossible to become the PM unless and until the Hindus of this country unite and vote as a single bloc like the Muslims do.

However, I know that is not going to happen.

That's why I believe Modi will never be the PM.

That is, however, rather an acknowledgement of an unavoidable reality from my side than an expression of my desire.

Modi will never enter the central government due to the foreign Policies of India and He also knows that. Till we get veto, he cannot become a PM

It has nothing to do with foreign policy, our domestic affairs are not dependent on foreign policies, it is the other way around.

Is Narendra Modi even the contender ??? I mean if he stands he is gonna win...but BJP has alot of big leaders who are waiting for there chance. Sushma Swaraj is not that old and considering she is the present head of BJP, i doubt she's gonna give this place to Modi so easily. Although if i had to chose between Modi and Sushma Swaraj i not sure...i like both of them. Woman leadership might bring a different perspective for India and especially if that woman is Sushma Swaraj. Powerful, strong will but not stupid unlike other woman leaders in India, Sushma swaraj. Modi on the other hand is no doubt Powerful, strong will but he's also known for quick decision making which is rare in a politician.
I don't think Rahul Gandhi has shown any leadership qualities unlike his Father or Grandmother or Great Grandfather. If Gandhi family wants to get back its glory i would say bring Priyanka Gandhi, she has one hell of a personality from what i have heard but she tries to stay away from politics unless her mother or brother needs help.

You're wrong about Priyanka Gandhi.

You see, the Gandhi family, especially after their recent defeat in UP has been reduced to relics of an era long gone.

People throng the rallies to see the fair skinned Gandhis, are fascinated by the helicopters and the assortment of glamour and attention their rally brings to a sleepy, dormant village or town.

...and then the people go back and vote for some other party.

You only have to check the results of the recent elections in UP where Priyanka Gandhi campaigned.

Priyanka promised her mother, 10 out of 10 seats in the Amethi and Rae Bareli areas.

She could manage a measly 2.

That says a lot about the 'charm' of Priyanka.

The Congress would have us believe that it has found a saviour in Priyanks Gandhi when Rahul failed.

...only that the Congress itself has not come to terms with the thrashing it got even in areas where Priyanks campaigned.

I will not want to discuss much about this here, but in central govt. he will not come nor he wants coz' he knows. You will see it in the next elections.

Do you know our all domestic affairs has more than 100% to do with foreign policies? Once we get Veto, there will be a massive change in our democracy.

Im just waiting for this piece of garbage Manmohan to go away..
