The 2012 gang-rape and murder of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student in New Delhi shook the nation. Many young boys and girls from schools and colleges across India held protests and candlelight marches condemning the rape. But a study conducted in 11 Indian cities, including New Delhi, suggests that attitudes towards women haven’t really changed—even among the young and educated.

Mukesh Singh, one of the men who raped the 23-year-old woman, said in a soon-to-be-released 63-minute documentary, India’s Daughterthat“housework and housekeeping is for girls, not roaming in discos and bars at night doing wrong things, wearing wrong clothes.”

“She should just be silent and allow the rape,” he said.

Singh moved to Delhi from his village in Rajasthan in the early 1990s, and worked as a day labourer and a driver. Sadly, even school and college students hold similar views.

Findings of a survey by Bangalore-based nonprofit Children’s Movement for Civic Awareness (CMCA), in cities including Kolkata, Guwahati, Jaipur and Bangalore, show that gender biases in India still persist at large. The survey interviewed a total of 10,542 students—6,168 in grade IX and 4,374 in first year of college—across 330 high schools and 220 colleges.

Almost 60% of the boys surveyed think that women dress provocatively and instigate men, leading to violent crimes against women. More than 50% of the girls surveyed share this view.

While 43% of the boys think women have no choice but to accept a certain degree of violence, the proportion of girls sharing the same view is slightly lower at 39%.

Ironically enough, 71% of the surveyed students think women can perform equally well or better than men in all professions and yet 52% of them said the main role of the women is to run the house and raise children.

What explains the regressive attitudes towards women?

According to Manjunath Sadashiva, director of CMCA, the education system may be the problem. “Our education system is not helping at all in removing the stereotypes in the society. It is not moulding or shaping young minds to be humane citizens. This (survey results) isn’t surprising.”

So, unless India manages to revamp its curricula and promote gender sensitisation classes in schools, patriarchal attitude is likely to thrive. Harsher laws can do only so much.

If you were ever approached to answer a survey in India , you would understand why the stats are as indicated above. The survey usually approaches you on the basis of whether you accept that the question is a way of life in India and thereafter publishes its findings to show that you agreed with the statements as being your view.

So most of women raped in India invited to be raped...You agree with it...

I guess, i will have to come up with another report for Pakistan :P

Question is
Women dress and behave provocatively ?
And expected answer is "no"
If you answer "yes" then its a crime :partay:
Question should have been "does majority of women dress and behave provocatively ? "
They are generalising here ..Answer for first question will be 'yes' in all liberal societies ..but to what extent will not only give us public opinion but dressing sense of our people

some connected things have been on the rise in india...

1. increase in the young ( esp. males ) supporting or joining religious groups and political parties... india has the largest number of young males and most of them voted for narendra modi ( and sangh parivaar ).

2. more traditional themes in tv serials.

3. laughing at those who protest oppression and talk of revolutionary change... example is the attitude of many indian members on pdf.

4. increase in number "business schools" ( though they have reduced since 2011 because of external reasons ).

5. more consumerism, especially cell phone, which means more religious/regressive content on internet.

6. more books focusing on religious mythology, and presented in "cool" way.

7. more female gymnasiums, focusing on turning ladies into thin or muscular androgynous ( boyish ) figures.

8. more yoga centers and more attendees in them, especially for the retarded cult, "art of living".

9. more dogs... now 20+ million... facilities and clothing lines for them.

10. insane immediate denial of anything not accepting india to be anything but a "economic super power" and "an idea whose time has come" and a paradise generally.

all of these continue the traditional oppressions and inequalities india had for the last 2900 years... it is not surprising to see the result of that survey.

Not only in India, but across the south Asia most of the men think in the same way because we all live in a patriarchal society for generations. We made to believe that women are inferior to men and should be under control of men. Some consider women as just an instrument for sex, producing & looking after their children etc. Look at the western countries especially the Scandinavian nations where women are considered as equals and have a great presence in society as well as government.Noticeably in these nations the influence religious and cultural extremists are very less. The position of the women in any society is directly proportional to the social and economic development of that particular society. What we must understand that, women does not demand or require the protection or the laws made by men, whereas they need equality and liberty just as men.
