JSM-J renounces separatist ideology

Bureau Report

HYDERABAD, March 15: The Jeay Sindh Mahaz (Junejo) has made amendments to its constitution, manifesto, political terminology and party flag to give a new direction to the nationalist movement in line with the needs of fast changing world and rid it of negative tendencies and reactionary attitude.

The convenor of the party’s central ad hoc committee, Abdul Khaliq Junejo, said at a news conference at the press club on Saturday that the word Sindhu Desh in the party’s constitution had been replaced with “sovereign, autonomous and prosperous Sindh” while the symbol of axe in the middle of party flag had been replaced with the map of Sindh province.

He said that the amendments had been approved by the central executive and central committee of the party and finalised by the party’s national congress held in Radhan on March 8 and 9.

Mr Junejo said that the supreme leader of nationalist movement G.M. Syed had announced a programme for political, cultural and economic independence of Sindh and founded Jeay Sindh Mahaz to achieve the objectives.

Syed Saheb wrote a book titled “Why Sindhu Desh and for what purpose” to publicise and explain his programme. He laid emphasis on two points - international situation and the characteristics of nationalist movement, which included workers’ training and impeccable character, Mr Junejo said.

He said that it was an age of Cold War and the world was divided into two blocs - Soviet Union and America but many changes had since taken place with the dissolution of Soviet Union.

The world had become unipolar, which was now heading towards a multipolar world and many new regional powers had emerged on the world map, he said.

Similarly, nationalist movements had undergone many changes but regrettably all the changes were negative. Knowledge and enlightenment were replaced with ignorance and reactionary activities and wisdom and arguments had been made subordinate to brute force, he observed.

He said that national interests had been sacrificed at the altar of personal interests and extortion had become the order of the day. The slogan of Sindhu Desh and the symbol of axe, which was part of the flag, had become synonymous with extortion, he regretted.

The situation had compelled the JSM to make amendments to its constitution, manifesto and terminology to maintain its individuality and keep pace with the demands of fast changing world.

He said that the JSM would continue to struggle for the restoration of democracy, secularism and equality in the province and oppose terrorism, fundamentalism and racism.
JSM-J renounces separatist ideology -DAWN - National; March 16, 2008

After the ANP, whose manifesto (to me at least) advocates autonomy within the Pakistani federation, this is a major blow to the those who pntificate about "seperatist movements tearing Pakistan apart". The BLA attempts at an insurgency too are a far cry from what was attempted in the 1970's, and for now remain stuttering and devoid of broad support.

Given the economic and strategic importance of Sindh however, and coming on the back of the assasination of BB, an event that many thought would reignite the seperatist cause, the JSM decision is a pragmatic and welcome one.

Good news. I hope that some Hurriat dynasaurs too learn something from this and avoid getting struck in a time warp.

people of sindh decided in 1947 to become part of pakistan but people of kashmir reject to become part of india from 1947 up to now

Thats why I say we need negotiations with the nationalists.they are our people .They realize the importance of pakistani federation.

They realize that in Today circumstances its impossible to exist independently and be fully out of influence of major powers without federation.

Most of the nationalist have already given up separatism like ANP,JSM and the Baloch nationalists like BNP(mengal),BNP,NP and JWP dont advocate separatism.

BLA does .Thats also bcz of US and Indian support.

But I am sure that there are sincere elements too in BLA as they have said they would consider negotiations with Zardari if he makes pro baloch policies.

One can only wait and watch that they put their mouth where their money is!

Actually I would argue that the focus is now on the new Pakistani government, and whether they can follow through on their promises of increasing autonomy for the provinces, in a reasonable time frame.

The ANP and JSM, and most of the Baluch Nationalist groups have as a centerpiece of their demands, the issue of greater provincial autonomy within the Pakistani Federation, rather than "separatism". The political parties who overtly espouse support for such measures have the necessary strength in the National Assembly and the Senate (In the senate, if the PML-Q plays spoil sport, they will have the majority in a year or so) to undertake this.

Within Baluchistan, if the "Provincial Autonomy" demands of the nonviolent Baluch nationalist parties are satisfied, the violent militant groups will fade away due to lack of relevance and popular support.

AM,

These separatist movements the world over, are movements that have some popular base.

If the popular base was the sole issue that was in the reckoning, then these movements and the populace could be satisfied.

However, what happens in actuality is that these movements are hijacked by personalities. They slowly assume a larger than life stature, rightly or wrongly. Then, these movements become vehicles for their personal ambitions and the real cause is slowly dissolved and becomes a hoary mist amidst other issues, mostly conjured to keep the personalities' personality in the limelight!

That is why I say anti-Pakistan elements are using all their energies to remove Musharraf.
Musharraf has given us a new Pakistan.

Good points Salim - It does lead to the question then, that in the absence of Marri and Bugti and a "high profile personality" to replace them, whether bringing the remaining non-militant nationalist parties on board by moving on the provincial autonomy issue will indeed sound the death knell for the few groups left in Baluchistan.

If one were to assume that it would, then should the GoP's decision to remove Bugti and Marri be seen in a more long term light, and positively - in the long term there appears to be no one of major standing left who would pursue a separatist cause, though there are a few still advocating strongly for "autonomy" within the Pakistani Federation.

The removal of the leaders is always the correct action, but one has to display caution and not make them martyrs.

Though not quite in the same vein, but just as an example of emotional upheavals that in no way suggest popularity in normal times, the assassination of BB, or for that matter of Rajiv Gandhi, did 'move' the people and their votes.
