Karachi unrest: ANP man’s killing stirs up violence

KARACHI:

After a night-long lull, violence erupted again in the metropolitan city which saw on Tuesday a deadly bout of violence and arson triggered by the death of two Muttahida Qaumi Movement activists. On Wednesday, rioting started after the killing of an Awami National Party (ANP) activist in New Karachi.

ANP’s joint secretary for Patel Para, Zainul Abideen, died while Sajid Hasanzia was injured in an attack by unknown gunmen. As the news spread, aerial firing and rioting began again in the city.

As a result nine vehicles were torched and two more people were killed in Gulbahar and PIB Colony.

Firing continued till late in the night in Patel Para, Teen Hatti, Gurumandir, Banaras, Lasbella, Essa Nagri, Pehlwan Goth, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Sohrab Goth, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Saddar, Lasbella and other neighbourhoods.

The ANP has called for a day of mourning on Thursday.

Karachi unrest: ANP man

With the body count still rising, the President swoops into town

KARACHI: President Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari arrived in Karachi late on Friday night and held a meeting with Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah to discuss the recent law and order situation in the city.

Sources said that the Chief Minister briefed the President over recent spate of violence, target killings and extortion in the city.

The Bilawal House spokesperson avoided giving out a schedule of meetings that the President is expected to follow while visiting the port city. However, sources say Zardari is expected to meet with other senior party workers and officials to discuss the law and order situation of the city.

Zardari’s visit comes after Karachi has suffered some of the worst violence since the turn of the year with close to 25 people being killed, over 40 vehicles burnt in four days of violence.

On Thursday, Zardari and Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain had discussed the situation over a phone call and the President had assured he would chair a meeting to oversee progress in curbing violence in the metropolis.

Three workers of the Mohajir Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi (MQM-H) were shot at and wounded in the area of Landhi, where party leader Afaq Ahmed resides.

Gunmen opened fire at the party activists at 8:15 am as they were standing next to shops that the armed men were forcibly shutting down. According to the MQM-H, their workers, and not the store, were targeted.

MQM-H worker Atlfua from Korangi was shot in the head and is in a critical state. He was first admitted to the Korangi hospital and has now been shifted to Jinnah hospital. Two other workers, Liaqat Ali and Abdul Ghaffar alias Soni, were also shot at and are being treated at the Jinnah hospital.

High alert: Defend yourself, Altaf Hussain tells Pakistanis

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain says people must step up to protect themselves given the harrowing and dangerous conditions in Pakistan.

The call for self-defence came as Altaf Hussain expressed concern at the increase in the number of terrorist activities and cases of robberies, vehicle thefts, street crimes, extortion and kidnapping being recorded countrywide. In the past week, one MQM activist and his brother was killed and two others injured in PIB Colony. Three Awami National Party workers have also died in targeted killings. The MQM has also spent a considerable part of the past month sounding alarm bells over cases of extortion in Karachi.

“At some points it becomes important for people to bear a burden for the sake of their security,” he said. The MQM chief has offered a number of suggestions to Pakistanis to help deter crime in their areas. He appealed to people to form vigilance committees in every lane, neighbourhood and in small and main markets.

In a detailed statement issued on Friday with suggestions for neighbourhood security, Altaf Hussain said that these vigilance teams should have a “strong alarm system that can alert the lane and neighbourhood in the case of any danger or if a robber is in the area.” He believes that people need to defend themselves. “In front of every lane there are at last ten houses on each side. If there are teams of five that do an eight-hour shift for these 20 houses, then the rotation of one person from the vigilance team can be every five days.”

Along with an alarm system, Altaf Hussain suggested that the vigilance teams can surround any criminal in the area and should have whistles similar to those scouts and civil defence staff have, and can alert the police and other law enforcement agencies to take the criminal(s) into custody.

Hussain has asked people that since they have responded to his appeals in the past, they should try out his suggestions for a week and see the results for themselves.

The MQM’s Wasay Jalil said that Altaf Hussain’s call is because of the rise in crime, and the tried-and-tested efforts by the MQM in 2007 and 2009 of initiating neighbourhood watches. “The MQM supporters and workers are already doing this and there are law enforcement agencies, but society needs to step up because these crimes are in societies and neighbourhoods,” Jalil said.

The MQM chief has also repeatedly asked the president and prime minister to look into the security conditions of Karachi. In a phone conversation on Thursday, President Asif Ali Zardari reassured Altaf Hussain that he will call a meeting in Karachi soon on the city’s security situation.

good and MQM bachari masoom haina???

MQM tu is fasad ke jaar hai...no MQM means there is no reason for ANP and PPP thugs to be in Karachi!

MQM is the reason for all this terrorism. Those who have lived in Karachi know this. Its strange that two parties - MQM and ANP sitting in government have killed so many people whom they were supposed to protect. These terror organisations must not be voted again. But there are still sympathizers for them.
If they are elected again, people of Karachi will get what they deserve. Police cant arrest these traget killers because MQM is in government. The cycle of violence starts when MQM thugs shoot down a Mohajir Qaumi Movement, again MQM, activist or ANP activist and the circle of violence begins.
Then MQM leader, who resides in London makes a telephonic call which borders on stand up comedy and his band of thugs go on rampage burning transport vehicles mostly owned by pakhtuns who are represented by ANP.
MQM wants to be total dominant force in the city and it does not like the fact that ANP has started to win a few seats from the city too.
I would like to narrate a personal experience. MQM was at the peak of its popularity in late 80s. My sister had just finished her matric and was looking to get admission in intermediate. Since admission applications go through education department of govt. of Sindh, which was predominantly staffed by MQM sympathizers, she would get rejected on every application! The reason, we were told several times that since we not 'mohajirs' by their definition, we cant get admission!! My sister lost one year because of that and eventually got admission through a Sindhi acquaintance of my father.
MQM is a racist, terrorist organization and we must speak up against it.

Oh by the way, MQM is banned in Canada. Its designated rightly as a terrorist organization.
