The hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference today distanced itself from the 'decree' issued by grand mufti of Jammu and Kashmir, that had termed singing as "un-Islamic", even as it dismissed the reported threats to the Valley's maiden all-girls rock-band as "mere propaganda".
"We disassociate ourselves from the 'fatwa' issued by Mufti Bashiruddin (grand mufti of Jammu and Kashmir). People do not recognise him as grand mufti (chief cleric)... Only the government recognises him," Hurriyat Conference spokesman Ayaz Akbar told PTI.

Akbar termed the decrees issued by the grand mufti as "mysterious" saying such things give rise "lawlessness in the society".

"It is mysterious...The way he issues fatwas...It arises lawlessness," Akbar said, adding fatwas can be issued only when a nation is governed under Shariah rule.

The Hurriyat spokesman also dismissed as "mere propaganda" the reported threats to the rock-band 'Pragaash', saying "a big bomb is being made out of the issue".

"There is no threat to the girls. Nobody has issued any threats. It is a mere propaganda by Indian media and they are making a big bomb out of a normal issue to defame Kashmiris," he said.

Akbar said some youngsters posting abuses on social networking sites cannot be termed as threat, adding Hurriyat does not support such abuse or coercion and force in any way.

The Syed Ali Shah Geelani-led Hurriyat Conference Sunday slammed Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for supporting the “un-Islamic and immoral activities” of the first all-girls rock band of Kashmir.
“ For centuries Kashmir has been an epitome of decency and its dignified treatment of women. No noble family in this land of saints and seers can even think of allowing their daughters to become dancers and objects of entertainment for men,” Ayaz Akbar, the spokesman of Geelani-led Hurriyat, said in a statement.
Akbar lashed out at Abdullah for his “unnecessary support” to the three class X students who received abusive and hate messages on their Facebook page following a public performance last December.
“Although in a civilised society there is no place for coercion and force, yet there are some values a citizen has to adopt to safeguard the ethical, moral and religious traditions,” Akbar said.
Omar had come out in support of the girls yesterday saying police will probe the threats issued to them .
"I hope these talented young girls will not let a handful of morons silence them," he had said on micro-blogging site Twitter.
Akbar said Omar Abdullah’s support to the band was “unfortunate but unsurprising because his family has long disassociated itself from Islamic and ethical values.”
Akbar said Omar should have gone through history of Kashmir to find out the high regard and esteem bestowed upon women in order to save them from being sold as commodity.
Akbar said there was no room for “Western culture and immoral activities in Kashmir.”
Referring to the reported threats being given to the rock band, the spokesman termed it "not good".
"Instead, parents should have rectified the things and provided advice to their daughters that their activities were not as per ethics of Islam, culture and our unique identity," he said.
Though there are dozens of bands currently playing music of different genres in the Kashmir Valley, the girls -- vocalist-guitarist Noma Nazir, drummer Farah Deeba and Guitarist Aneeka Khalid -- formed the first all-girls rock band under the name of 'Pragaash' (light).
The band came to limelight in late December last year after their performance at the annual 'Battle of the Bands' competition here.
Meanwhile, at least three pages have come up on Facebook in the past three days throwing their weight behind the band.

Pragaash (light), the first all-girls rock band of Kashmir, yesterday decided to call it quits in the wake of a 'fatwa' issued by Grand Mufti terming singing as un-Islamic.

Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah was among a large number of political leaders who extended their unflinching support to the girls, urging them not to quit singing because of a "bunch of morons". The hardline Hurriyat led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani also criticised the Grand Mufti.

.

Sensing the mounting support for the girls, hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference led by Geelani had distanced itself from the 'fatwa' and said, "There is no threat to the girls. Nobody has issued any threats. It is a mere propaganda by the media and they are making a big bomb out of a normal issue to defame Kashmiris."

The spokesman of the Hurriyat faction Ayaz Akbar had said some youngsters posting abuses on social networking sites cannot be termed as threat and added that Hurriyat does not support such abuse or coercion and force in any way.

It seems Hurriyat changed their stance.

It seems Hurriyat changed their stance.

:) it seems the Indians have tried to bank on a blog for bashing Hurriyat.

but anyway the fact is that Kashmiris including freedom struggling Hurriyat party supported the girl band and condemned the cleric which is encouraging and a good omen

it wont be surprising to know that the cleric was paid by any other band who were feeling threatened by these girls or it wont be surprising either if it was a publicity stunt by some hidden players ;)

I dont know. This band lies at the very bottom of the totem pole.

why don't our forces eliminate all these extremist mullahs akhir AFSPA kab kaam main ayega

To be fair on the Mufti sahab, he has a job to do, that is comment on what jurisprudence on the matter dictates him to do.

It is no secret that Islamic jurisprudence does not favor such a liberal view for the role of women in the performed arts. He didn't ask for them to be murdered, he gave his view, as it is required for him to do so.

Either don't HAVE a grand mufti, or muftis or don't criticize their calls. What did you expect out of him? "Shabash beti, next time thori head banging bhi karna".

Maybe the girl agreed with the Mufti, and hence she quit. If she quit out of a threat then its the states fault.
