Moscow ready to defend allies against Taliban on Tajik-Afghan border

economic issues
Ultimately the problem was bigger than Brezhnev or any Soviet leader. The problem or flaw was writ in the very system of the Soviet Union. While communism and collective ownership with cental control of the economy had lot going for it and there is no doubt the system delivered in pushing the Russian people from being backward peasants living in abject poverty or even servitude akin to how Dalits exist in India it failed to compete with the capitalist system of the west.

This weakness was known by Washington who then pushed the Soviets even more into a arms race knowing that defence was already eating much of the Soviet economy leaving precious little for the public. Whilst the West was awash with consumer lifestyfle the Russian would have rationing of everything. Fact is human greed drives economies. Without that greed nobody works hard and economy cannot deliver. Amidst all this the Soviets walked into Afghanistan. That about broke the camels back.

If you look at the Chinese CCP they cleverly adjusted and allowed private enterp[rise to take off within a centrally controlled economy. Glasnost came to late to save the Soviet Union. Also Soviet Union was a a empire of multi-ethnoc states. Some Nordic Europeans like Latvians, some Muslims like Tajiks from Asia and others similiar to East Asians in Siberia. Soviet Union literally had every shade of humans from white to brown to yellow with exception of blacks and something like 6 time zones.

It was bound to fail at some point like our silly federation with two wings before 1971.

Not necessarily bad tbh they went from medieval peasant society to industrial superpower in decades (took the europeans centuries).

Either way, Russia understands that stability of central Asian states is paramount and thus made this statement. Probably help them with border management not more than that.

As Taliban reaches Tajikistan border, Russia says it's ready & prepared to defend its close ally against Islamist terrorist group

The Russian Foreign Ministry has revealed that Moscow is ready to interfere in the situation on the Tajik-Afghan border, noting that it will defend its allies against any possible incursion over the frontier by the Taliban.

Speaking at a briefing on Friday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova revealed that two-thirds of the border is already under the control of the group, designated by Moscow as a terrorist organization.

Russia and Tajikistan are both members of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), a mutual defensive pact consisting of six former republics of the Soviet Union.

According to Zakharova, Russia's 201st military base in Tajikistan is equipped with everything required to defend the country.
“If necessary, additional measures will be taken to prevent provocations and aggravation of the situation,” she said.

The situation arose in Afghanistan following the reduction of US military presence in the country. As per Washington’s plan, Kabul and the Taliban were set to agree on a transitional government before the formation of a more permanent setup. Neither side has been willing to compromise, and now the Taliban has made territorial gains in the country’s north, on the Tajik border.

Zakharova also noted that there have been multiple occasions of Afghan government forces crossing over the border with Tajikistan to escape gunfire.

“We call on the opposing sides of the inter-Afghan conflict to show restraint and avoid the spread of tensions beyond the country's borders,” she said.

Earlier on Friday, a top Russian CSTO official told RT that Tajikistan and its allies would repel any possible Taliban incursion from neighboring Afghanistan, with Moscow ready to help.

“We’ve seen the Taliban's outposts. At least for now, we see no aggression coming from [them],” General Colonel Anatoly Sidorov said. “They are not hiding at all. It appears the situation is fairly peaceful on the [Afghan] side.”

Take it easy. This statement is more aimed at patting the back of ex-communists ruling elite class in CARs. I think it does not mean protecting sell-outs from within Afghanistan. Taliban have already gained control of Afghan borders with both Tajikistan as well as Uzbekistan. I don't think Russia means any business in the internal affairs of Afghanistan.

I lived through that period and although there was no internet in those days I was known to frequent my well stocked Sixth Form and later the central library. I also got to visit Moscow in 1988.

I could give you 30 page thesis on why Soviet Union fell apart but I can assure you the reasons were inside and Afghanistan helped to manifest that weakness. There is no chance the Taliban - who I have absolute respect for and have always sided with have any chance of crossing the Amu Darya. The Russians would defeat any such move. Taliban need to focus on inside the country.

I don't think Taliban has any such intentions. They would be foolish to do that anyway.
In my opinion, what they are doing is securing entry and check points in to Afghanistan , to establish their authority and control the country gradually.

Excellent points typical Indus responses well written and backed with information that's not picky or whitewashed but I would look to highlight that Socialist Afghanistan was divided internally beaten the Pasthun led Khalq and Turkic/Tajik led Parchamis both were communist but absolutely hated each other Soviets tried to bridge the gap but ethnic hatred festered as for the USSR it would have still existed if Gorbachev took economic reforms like the Chinese did not political should have left Afghanistan much earlier as Andropov envisioned and focus internally when the Soviets fell in 1991 the Chinese Communist leadership did a autopsy and post mortem on the Soviets also and came with interesting analysis on the collapse

:coffee: Unclear development , what is happening in Afghanistan hard to tell best to stay out of it

Taliban has no interest in Tajikistan or any neighbouring country.... Taliban has already secured all the borders with neighbouring countries without hassle..

There is really not much to see here just the CSTO and it will only be activated inside Tajikistan territories

Russia has CSTO agreement with Tajikistan meaning it has to defend Tajikistan if it is attacked in it's territories more like what happened in Armenia Russia was only limited to mainland Armenia..
