Twenty-three people, arrested in connection with violence at a rally at Azad Maidan in Mumbai on Saturday, and organisers of the protest have been slapped with murder charge, police said.

Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code has been invoked against them, they said.

The rally, to protest against the riots in Assam and the alleged victimisation of Muslims in Myanmar, had been organised by city-based Raza Academy and some other groups.

Two persons were killed and at least 55 others, including 45 policemen, were injured in the violence that erupted during the protest. The arrested were produced this afternoon before a court which remanded them in police custody till August 19. Asking for the custody of the accused, police said they wanted to find out if the violence was pre-planned.

The weapons snatched by the mob from police personnel (2 self-loading rifles and a pistol) were yet to be recovered, they told the court. The defence counsel claimed the accused were not involved in the violence, and were arrested when they went back to pick up their motor-cycles parked near the scene of violence. Police had gone through CCTV footage to identify the violent protesters.

Meanwhile, slamming the Maharashtra government for "complete failure" of security and intelligence network, the BJP on Sunday said the authorities there have a lot to answer about the hooliganism at Azad Maidan inMumbai. It demanded the arrest of those who took law into their own hands inMumbai on Saturday.

Party spokesperson NirmalaSitaraman said the government there "allowed this to happen" despite been informed by the Maharashtra ATS about infiltration of terrorist groups into the state. "It is a complete failure of the security and intelligence network of theMaharashtra government...I think, they have a lot to answer as to how they allowed this kind of hooliganism to happen in the heart of the city creating a fear psychosis among the people," Sitaraman told reporters in London. She said had intelligence been sufficient, such an incident could have been avoided as people came from all across armed with iron rods and hockey sticks.

She, however, maintained the police despite of being provoked remained quiet and watched even as several of them were injured and women constables were molested.

The party also took on the state government for "failure" to check the violence at Azad Maidan to which it had earlier denied access to "peaceful" Team Anna protestors besides workers of the party. She also condemned the attacks on north-eastern people residing in north coastal Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha

Great...now it should be done on fast track basis, not same old decade long persecution....

Whom do we think we are fooling? Are they really going to arrest 50,000 people?

Once again we waste our national resources on a wild goose chase.

There is a problem and this is not the solution to that problem.

They'll be out on bail before you can say 'Jack'! Vote bank politics, my dear Watson! The Congress wouldn't want to hurt the sentiments of a certain section of society, would they? And friend Digvijay will soon be going to their houses carrying packed Hyderabadi biryani and aam ka achaar! :P

A special court is needed and fast track the justice else it will not instill confidence in people. Members in India - what is the public opinion on these incidents?

And we can expect Human rights and NGOs getting involved in that they would want to see the rights of the "victims" protected.

good, it should be an example who wanted to make trouble in India. Why didnt police fire when they snatched their weapons?

This is where the Indian judicial system comes as a boon.

To actually process the bail plea they will take one year and that is a long time.
