Navy to procure three dimensional radars for warships

New Delhi, Nov 10 (PTI) Aiming to provide a 360 degree surveillance capability to warships, the Indian Navy is planning to induct state-of-the-art three dimensional (3D) radars for detecting enemy aircraft, helicopters and sea-skimming missiles.

"We are considering induction of 3D air surveillance radars for warships above 3,000 tonnes to detect aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and missiles," Navy officials told PTI here.

They said the radar would also be required to automatically track in three dimensions including range, height and direction.

In a global Request for Information (RFI) issued by the Navy, it has asked the global manufacturers to provide details of the ranges at which they can track enemy fighter aircraft, helicopters and anti-ship missiles.

The Navy wants the radar to be compatible with the latest combat management systems used by it.

The DRDO has already developed a three dimensional radar named Central Acquisition Radar (3D-CAR) for use with the Akash Surface to Air missile system, which is capable of tracking 150 targets.

The DRDO has also developed the maritime version of the 3D radar which is called 'Revathi'.

Yeah they will purchase them but not now, may be in 3-4 years. Right now we don't have any AC from which these aircrafts can operate although In might use it from shore but in that case they should go for something good may be phalcon or even drdo awacs is better.

Why are we even issuing a RFI ? We got the best system. Barak NG alongwith Elta's MFSTAR with brahmos is the deadliest combination for a warship.

Bull Sh*t article. All major IN vessels are already equipped with 3d AESA radars.

No...but why waste time when we already have the best option of our own ?
I believe this is directly down to protocol, MOD has a very strict line one single source tenders nowadays, so this just has to happen. Most of the time it is a good thing so there isn't corruption issues but occasionally like this it is a giant waste of time that ends in the same result.

I believe this is for older IN large vessels as all new major ships are coming with 3d AESA but this sort of back dating for existing fleet without them. Pretty neat idea IMO.

I heard drdo also build a naval version of this....

Buddy thats the case when we don't make an equipment. For eg: IA didn't issued a RFI in case of Pinaka or Akash or Brahmos. You know Brahmos is very expensive, we could have just stick to Yakhont.

Here we have a best defence suite in the whole world. By the way lets have a competition the only thing is close to this is US AEGIS system but thats very expensive and if we take a look at the capability of all these new weapons and with the addition of Brahmos 2 in 4-5 years, i think we already have the best combo.

The P 17A FFGs and P 15A DDGs will have even better overall offence and defence capability than AEGIS combat system. These ships will most probably use the Elta El/M 2084 along with the MF STAR as the 2084 is the FCR of Barak 8 MRSAM and Barak NG ERSAM.

The system i am talking is in P15 destroyer. P17a and P15a will also have the same combo with the addition of Brahmos 2, Nirbhay and may be LRCM which will make them the deadliest of all.

Yeah, and hopefully the Brahmos 2 and Barak NG(not 8)gets ready by 2018 so that these missiles can be incorporated onboard the P 17A FFGs and P 15B DDGs.And the MDL and GRSE should seriously start thinking of using Carbon fibre composites instead of A/B grade steel to make the P 17A FFGs,P 15B DDGs and P28 corvettes. This will make them at a time both much lighter and tougher.Being lighter, they will get greater range and power to weight ratio, speed and more weapons and sencors can be mounted.Besides, the composites have much greater life, can absorb incoming radar waves to a great extent and also they are very good thermal insulaters thus reducing the ships' infrared signature. We already have a large composite manufacturing base in our country which we should explogt to the optimum level possible.

^^^ why can't it install Revathi on these???? If we have a 3D-CAR then why buy from outside again?? BTW which ship is this? looks huge.... is it a Delhi class destroyer?
