KARACHI: The National Clearing Company of Pakistan Limited (NCCPL) website was hacked on Thursday, NCCPL officials disclosed.

NCCPL officials confirmed that the website of the company was hacked by some Indian hacker who added some irrelevant content to the data present on the website. The added content suggests that the hacker has some connection with India.

However, as soon as the breach was detected, the company blocked the website within 10 minutes, they added.

“The hacking did not affect the settlement and clearing at the three stock exchanges of Pakistan,” an ational Clearing Company of Pakistan Limited official said, adding that “the company would restore the website later on Thursday.”

He added that the NCCPL has outsourced its website to a private company.

Tech Angles Network CEO Syed Azhar Afaq told The News that this is not an unusual act in today’s information technology era. Renowned world websites have been hacked around the world.

“Take the example of Pentagon website, which was hacked though it contains sensitive data. Despite spending huge money, websites, even major ones, are vulnerable to hacking,” he said.

Another IT expert said that some Pakistani Internet Service Providers (ISPs) were also targeted on Thursday night.

Afaq stressed the need of following best practices for making better security arrangements for websites and this is where the government plays its role.

But the government could only give guidelines; major role has to be played by private companies.

Hackers attack websites that have little or no security arrangements so it is the prime responsibility of the website runner to follow best practices to avoid hacking. The guidelines are available on Internet, like the EU guidelines, that anyone can easily follow to avoid hackings, he added.
