Nuclear disaster inevitable in India – look what happened in France
Ashima Managa

India is still a small user of nuclear energy. The country is lead by politicians that are little educated and not informed about nuclear technologies. While Indian nuclear scientists are world class, in recent days they have learnt to politic and create spins.

India with a population of one billion and one third the size of United States is not an easy place to experience nuclear leaks and majors disasters.

Indian politicians and these days politically motivated nuclear scientists must understand there is a major difference in building some small nukes from plutonium and massive energy generating nuclear reactors. The concern is that of public safety and health hazards.

India should look at France to learn how nuclear energy can be really used for generating electricity. Even France is having serious difficulty in maintaining safety as its nuclear infrastructure ages.

In France, Uranium-bearing liquid has leaked from a broken underground pipe at a nuclear site in Southeastern France, the national nuclear safety authority said on Friday. It was the second leak discovered at a French site this month.

Experts are working to determine how much leaked uranium is present at nuclear company Areva's plant in the town of Romans-sur-Isere, the Nuclear Safety Authority said in a statement. Specialists are to work to clean up the site.

This can happen in India on a mega scale wiping out 30 to 40% of the population all of a sudden. At that point the nuclear proponents and those who sold India for $100 billion worth of nuclear reactors will hide in the cave.

Wonder what could be the motive behind such articles ?

Since I am not much into journalism , I cannot help wonder if such articles are written by journalists simply to remain relevant / on the pay rolls ?

What could you say of an Editor who accepts & allows such articles to be printed ?

Effectively, what the author is trying to convey that since there were leaks in France , a disaster is inevitable in India.

Not for a moment am I suggesting Indian scientists cannot & will not make mistakes but just coz there have been traffic accidents in France does it imply that that people in India ( & elsewhere ) should stop driving cars ?

I mean, can you stop progress because of such fears ?

As far as the education is concerned the auther should google and find out the qualification of DR. Manmohan Singh, Pranab Mukharji and other top officials in the government....and as far as their nuclear knowledge is concerned it is possible that they might have little knowlege regarding the nuclear technology afterall you can not expect to be everey elected PM or Pressident a Nuclear Scientist for any country for that matter and thats the reason why PM or Pressident has the team of advisers including a nuclear scientist.

Even if I’m one of the biggest supporters of US-Indo nuke deal, I myself believe that safety of these nuclear reactors will be a tough task but with the help of modern technology, there is nothing like “inevitable”. High tech nuclear reactors supplied by US will be very reliable. As United States itself, as a major electricity producer by uranium, and having 3rd largest population in the world, never faced any problem.

The writer of this article is a third class uneducated dumbo.

India has more than 50 years of experience in working with Nuclear reactors.
And if the above nonsense was true, millions would have died due to nuclear disasters.

FYI:

In 1955 construction began on India's first reactor, the 1 MW Apsara research reactor, with British assistance. And in September 1955, after more than a year of negotiation, Canada agreed to supply India with a powerful research reactor - the 40 MW Canada-India Reactor (CIR). Under the Eisenhower Administration's "Atoms for Peace" program the US agreed to supply 21 tons of heavy water for this reactor in Februrary 1956, and the reactor was dubbed the Canada-India Reactor, U.S. or CIRUS (now commonly written as Cirus).

India's Nuclear Weapons Program - The Beginning: 1944-1960

The nuclear reactors bought from the international market would be 3rd generation plants. While the 4th generation reactors are already on the advanced design stages. These are nuclear plants that cater to a wide variety of threats from earthquakes to terrorist attacks and have built in safety mechanisms in their design itself. They also have increasingly higher efficiency.

France has been operating these nuclear plants for more than a few decades, they were of older designs. As they age, problems are inevitable.

From my experience of Indians, they tend to be poor risk takers. First they'll always go to the extremes into the negative side of everything.

These are just the nuclear equivalent of pre-wedding jitters. It will pass.

Excellent insight. I am sure there is some basis for this.

There is a revival of nuclear industry the world over. Countries which had not made a nuclear reactor for decades are now rethinking about nuclear energy.

Last I heard USA, China, Pakistan and many other countries are interested in nuclear energy. The risks are the same for everyone.

My first field trip at University included a visit to Hinkley Point B nuclear power station near Bristol run by British Energy.

I made the point of asking about Pakistani and Indian nuclear power plants and the overall reaction from their engineers was very positive. They said alot of exchanges occur between various countries and that some of them had visited both countries and were very satisified with the safety measures in place by both our respective nations.

Reality check maybe?

Kill the messenger simply because she hit your nerve by raising a critical issue?

What could you say of an Editor who accepts & allows such articles to be printed ?
Well India is world largest democracy, isn't she? Or is she the domain of "India Shining" preachers only?

Effectively, what the author is trying to convey that since there were leaks in France , a disaster is inevitable in India.
You totally missed the point. France is world leader in nuclear technology and by far a powerhouse compared to other NSG members. If things can go wrong in France they can go wrong in South Asia including Pakistan and India.

Not for a moment am I suggesting Indian scientists cannot & will not make mistakes but just coz there have been traffic accidents in France does it imply that that people in India ( & elsewhere ) should stop driving cars ?
Remember Chernobyl?

I mean, can you stop progress because of such fears ?
No can't and you shouldn't! The author is merely raising the security issues.

Neo, Isn't Pakistan also keen to increase her nuclear energy footprint?

Do you disagree with the whole concept of nuclear energy on safety grounds or is it just India specific?

But yes, you are right that nuclear plants can go horribly wrong if proper safety precautions are not taken, so can car driving, so can the flying and so many other things we take for granted today.

I feel the solution is to implement safety procedures in a rigorous manner rather than leaving out the nuclear energy option altogether.

Reality check maybe?

How appreciative are you guys of anti Pak news & articles ??

As far as I am concerned by sending the kind of reply you have, you too join the league of " Gloat over you neighbors discomfiture " club in S Asia. What the hell .. are we ever going to raise ourselves above such petty jealousies and prejudices ? We are like the proverbial crabs from S Asia who when exported are not put in a box with a lid. .. Simply coz whenever one tries to get out of the box, the others pull him down !

No one is running away from realities, goof ups will / may happen. So what ? Why Chenobyl, are you aware of how many leaks have gone unreported in US or other parts of the world ?

I do not think anyone should bother what India is an example of, even at our worst we are consistent in National interests & foreign policy.

Why we are arguing let the deal first happen? It has still hurdles to cross.
