Nuclear Power in Pakistan

  • Pakistan has a small nuclear power program, with 1355 MWe capacity operating and 2300 MWe under construction, with Chinese help.
  • Pakistan's nuclear weapons capabilities have arisen independently of its civil nuclear fuel cycle, using indigenous uranium.
  • Because Pakistan is outside the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, due to its weapons program, it is largely excluded from trade in nuclear plant or materials, which hinders its development of civil nuclear energy. However, China is positive about nuclear cooperation with Pakistan.

Pakistan's Nuclear program has one basic and important function, to ensure Mutually assured 100% destruction with no matter how big the enemy nation is. unless 10 or more nations attack pakistan at once . Pakistan can Make sure we take 3 or 4 middle sized countries with us or 2 giant ones like india.

its purely for deterrence/ Mutal Destruction no win scenario. civil nuclear program for generation of energy has a very low priority. we have coal and hydro potential lots and lots of it, those are top priority for energy generation.
 
I think Pakistan should consolidate all its nuclear waste in one site

only problem is transport

never the less safer in the long term

also set up a nuclear decommissioning authority to manage all decommissioning works

decommissioning should become a sector in itself separate from commission

Pakistan needs to weigh the benefits of nuclear vs hydro...the cost if two nuclear plants is 9b dollars with max capacity of 2200 and yearly production of 18 billion units vs let say bhasha dasu bunji pathan thakot each with capacity of 4-7k mw with production of 23-25 billion units

Many countries are retiring nuclear plants due to nuclear waste issue
 
Large scale hydro are more difficult to built, take more time, are more disasterous for the environment and are prone to environmental affects e. g less rain fall or melting of glaciers.
Hence more and more countries are moving towards smaller water storage capabilities which have less of the anove sans being also prone to environmental challenges.
On the other hand newer nuclear power plants are more reliable, efficient and take 6/7 years to be built. After hydro they are still the cheapest option out there.

I am no fan of Nuclear power, I think it's far too dangerous. However I notice that even politicians who knock Nuclear power and in favour of 'Green power', once in power, turn to Nuclear power.

Hydro plants are prone to climate change. Mid size or run of river hydro are good but mega size dams like DB or Katzara are an environmental destroyer and a ticking time bomb. New nuclear designs are wayyyy safer and efficient.

First of all not all Pakistani nuclear power plants are listed in OP, secondly the Chashma and Khushab Nuclear power plans have their capacity increased massively not sure about the Khushab Nuclear plant how much has increased but Chashma had a massive capacity increased by Chinese even before CPEC they were working and building new reactors so this report is kind of out dated.

Khushab doesn't have a power plant. That reactor is not meant to produce power.

The capacity increase .... cannot be really called that.

This map gives a better perspective, NILORE and Kahuta has also nuclear reactors, small ones and not used for power generation. Also Khushab has 50MWx4 nuclear reactors, plutonium based and are military related.

NILORE has old zero reactors, not sure if they are still there or not, the US wanted them gone.
There is no such thing as plutonium based ...
Plutonium is the OUTCOME of the reaction. ( Plutonium is a synthetic element )
and Yes plutonium only has military usage.

That will be the key in coming years to come since Urnanium producing nations are not willing to sell atleast till we have stable economy ,With Nuke reactors Chsma 5 will be built may be feasibility studies are already done just to avoid any unwanted back lash like Indian rundi rona better to be quiet

we live on fractured, pressured land ..

For us, waste is not as big a issue as is our geography.
we live on fractured, pressured land ..
Waste is always an issue..transport?..placement ? Disposing ...waste runs in tones

But cost is another issue

Local coal is going tl be 3x cheaper (if similar financing schemes are made) and hydro nearly 2x

Finding one is one thing extracting it for production is another .
 
Karachi 2 reactor internals in place

Installation has been completed of the reactor internals of the Hualong One reactor under construction at unit 2 of the Karachi nuclear power plant in Pakistan.

Reactor internals are the major structures within a reactor pressure vessel that have one or more functions such as supporting the core, maintaining fuel alignment, directing primary coolant flow, providing radiation shields for the reactor vessel, and guiding in-core instrumentation.

"As the core component of the reactor pressure vessel, the internal components of the reactor are all stainless steel structures with high manufacturing and assembly precision," China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) said.

Installation of the reactor internals within the unit's reactor pressure vessel was completed at 2:38pm on 28 January, CNNC announced today. The company noted that this was 35 days ahead of schedule.

The reactor internals were designed by China Nuclear Power Research and Design Institute and manufactured by the Shanghai No.1 Machine Tool Plant.

Karachi 2 and 3 are the first export of China's Hualong One design, with construction of unit 2 beginning in 2015 and unit 3 in 2016. The units are scheduled for commercial operation in 2021 and 2022, respectively.

In addition to the two units under construction at Karachi, four Hualong One units are being built in China. CNNC is constructing two units at its Fuqing plant in Fujian province, while China General Nuclear (CGN) is building two at its Fangchenggang site in Guangxi province. All four units are expected to enter commercial operation in 2019-2020.

CGN proposes to use a UK version of its Hualong One design - the HPR1000 - at a prospective new nuclear power plant at Bradwell, England.
