Osmania University beef festival sparks violence, 2 vehicles torched - The Times of India

HYDERABAD: The 'Beef Festival' triggered violent protests on the Osmania University campus on Sunday evening, resulting in injuries to five students and protesters setting two vehicles on fire.

Akhil Bharathiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists tried to disrupt the festival, organised by Dalit student organisations and supported by Left groups, in front of Narmada Research Scholars (NRS) Hostel on the campus, but police foiled their attempt.

The 'Beef Festival' was announced last month by the Telangana Student Association, Progressive Democratic Student Union and Student Federation of India along with student groups from English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU). In a similar incident last year, ABVP students had staged a protest on Eflu campus.

At around 6.45 pm, even as the festival, where beef biryani was served to a group of over 200 supporters, was being wound up, about 50 student protesters shouting slogans tried to march towards the venue and started pelting stones. In the violence that continued till late in the night, two vehicles, including a media van, were torched by the angry protesters and five students of the organising committee suffered injuries.

Dalit students groups of OU supported by some senior faculty and city-based academics had organised the festival to celebrate the Dalit food culture, which includes eating beef. The festival was attended by senior faculty and academics like S Simhadri, Gali Vinod Kumar, Bhangya Bhukya, P L Visweswara Rao, Gogu Shyamala and G Aloysius, who were caught up in the violence. Anticipating trouble, police and paramilitary forces were stationed on the campus from morning itself and all entry/exit points were sealed to prevent outsiders from entering it.

Trouble started when ABVP activists marched from B Hostel to NRS demanding police arrest and remove the festival organisers. As the mob was stopped 30 metres from the venue, they started pelting stones. Though police could restrain the mob for about 30 minutes, the cordon was broken and several students started pelting stones at the NRS hostel.

Church backed Dalit(fake) organizations trying their best to vitiate the atmosphere and try distract attention from the Telengana state movement at the behest of the congress party.

You have not read the article properly............It was supported by Left.........Why not Ban Church & Christians in India.........add congress to the List and...............deport Christian madame to Italy with her Children's...........

Beef festival turns Osmania into battlefied, student stabbed

Hyderabad, April 16, 2012, (IANS)

A student of the Osmania university here was stabbed for supporting a beef festival organised by several student groups opposing ''food fascism'' in hostels, police said Monday.

The beef festival saw clashes, which saw five students being injured, and even led to vehicles being burnt.

The situation in the university was tense as violence continued in the campus past midnight with a group of students attacking the 'C' hostel and stabbing a student for supporting the beef festival. Police said the injured student was admitted to Gandhi Hospital here.

Protestors set afire a bus of state-owned Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC).

The clashes broke out Sunday night after some Dalit and left-wing student groups organised a beef festival on the campus, to highlight their demand for including beef in the hostel menu. Over 200 students and some professors attended the festival and ate various dishes made of beef.

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists staged a protest against the festival and clashed with the organisers. The two groups attacked each other with stones and sticks. Five students were injured in the clashes. Two vehicles were also set afire.
Police used teargas shells and batons to disperse the clashing groups. The campus, which witnessed many violent protests over separate Telangana state during last two years, turned into a battlefield.

The beef festival was organised by Telangana Students Association, Progressive Democratic Student Union, Student Federation of India and student groups from English and Foreign Languages University.

The organisers claimed that beef is the part of their cultural identity and an affordable source of nutrition. They said the festival was to oppose 'food fascism' in university hostels.

Supporting the demand, P.L. Visweswara Rao, former professor of communication and journalism at the university, said students have a right to seek a particular food. He alleged that the police and the university administration failed to protect the students participating in the festival.

Th ABVP, which opposed the beef festival, called for university shutdown Monday.
Police have sealed all the routes leading to the university and deployed additional police and paramilitary forces on the campus to prevent further clashes.

So true.. its time we should allow Pork too in Aligarh Muslim University.

Every religion should respect other's ethical, moral and social values. Otherwise results are in front of everyone.

BTW "Violent Clash in a college" does not deserve a thread on an international forum.

"Windjammer" just try to post something useful. Hope you will succeed one day!

Pork and Beef can be avoided if it sorts out a hell lot of problems. Isn't it?
