DAWN.COM | Pakistan | Government to set up Sufi Advisory Council

ISLAMABAD: The government on Sunday announced setting up of a 7-member ‘Sufi Advisory Council’ (SAC) with an aim to combating extremism and fanaticism by spreading Sufism in the country.

Interestingly, the SAC replaces an earlier such exercise when the PML-Q government had notified constitution of a ‘National Sufi Council’ with party president Chaudhry Shujaat as its president and taking some progressive intellectuals on it to give Sufism a chance to flourish.

The said NSC however became dormant after holding a ‘Sufi gala’ — a semi-music festival — in Lahore’s Qala and printing calendars in the name of council.

According to an official handout Haji Muhammad Tayyab who heads one of several factions of Jamiat Ulema Pakistan (JUP) will be the chairman of the SAC which will be holding its first meeting at the ministry of religious affairs on Tuesday June 9.

Other members of the SAC include Sahibzada Sajidur Rahman, Maulana Syed Charaghuddin Shah, Rawalpindi, Dr. Ghazanfar Mehdi Islamabad, Hafiz Muhammad Tufail Islamabad, Iranmullah Jan, Director General Ministry of Religious Affairs and Abdul Ahad Haqqani Deputy Director R&S) MORA.

While two last named persons were ministry’s officials Dr. Ghazanfar Mehdi is a retired government official, Sajidur Rahman is a close relative of Raja Zafarul Haq (PML-N) and Charaghuddin Shah is a member of PML-Q’s Ulema Mashaikh wing.

Haji Hanif Tayyab remained part of former military dictator Ziaul Haq’s regime in various capacities including a minister.

It is not clear whether another religious body could be set up in presence of Council of Islamic Ideology which is a constitutional body.

A great move!Wahaabis are not native culture. They are arabs.here it is Pakistani Muslima not Arab wanna be.Let Sufism Thrive! This can sure deal the extremism and the thirst by jehadis to eliminate hindus, christians and jews from the planet.Very Good Move!Infact in My state in India ,all sufi type of worship and reverence of khabar are banned by sunni wahaabi's funded by saud.
Let the peace prevails. These wahaabis like bin-laden wants to make muslim society world over to get excited and slaughter infidels(hence achieveing jehad) .for that they use media and news services to launch news that Christians and Jews attacked Islam so so and so ,Hindus Slaughtered Muslims kind of News. But Sensible Muslims knows that it is the wahaabi principle to slaughter kuffr in countries like India to Achieve Ummah.Infact ,I feel Ummah is a arab story.South Asian Muslims from India to Indonesia to Bangladesh has nothing to do with this Arab Enforcement. We need to Awake from this menace otherwise they will force to remove our culture for a arab version of everything.Infact ,I have seen some Muslims who wants somehow to claim arab descendent even if they looks pure dravidian indian.
Let Sufism Prevails!Let Peaceful Co-existance happen in India too.Let South Asia Develop shredding religious bigotry and religion as first priority.

Regards,
Azad .

only islam is the solution so government should try to spread islamic teachings...that are quran and hadiths

The best way to combat extremism is to educate the masses and by increasing the job opportunities and making sure that the jobs are available to the masses and not just the elite with strong references. The divide between the rich and poor should be narrowed so that the sense of insecurity, lack of justice and complexity can be removed.
The rest is all BS and a waste of time.

Government supported religious ideologies is the problem why we ended up in this mess. Doing this is going to result in mor problems that solutions. The government should focus on good governance, transperancy and eradicating corruption. Not on deciding what type of religion or religious ideology should be propagated.

The highlighted part pretty much sums up the need of the hour.

Looks like GOVT is just a bunch of idiots. In medicine 'allergies' are mostly reactions to certain external elements. To control them you need to first identify the cause which increases the reaction. Coming up with 'aasumed' remedies will just intensify the reaction

Education and only education, Quran and Hadith, can change us and make us the Muslims up to the standard that Allah and His beloved Prophet (SAW) want us to be. The prevailing Sufism in subcontinent is itself in need of reconsideration and reconstruction. This kind of sufism, music festivals and mantras etc, dosn't have any element of classic islamic sufism practiced by the saints like Junaid Bhughdadi, Hassan Basri, Ali Hijvery, Bahauddin Zakariya Multani even Khuwaja Ghulam Farid (who passed away in early last century) and Mehr Ali of Golra Sharif are far far above than the so called sufism generally in practice at present.

Above all, sufism is an attitude not a course or certificate programme that may be taught are given through some official body in formal ways. Look at the life histories of the sufi personalities mentioned above, no one among them will be seen in close quaters to the govenments of their time. They were, as I see them, sipiritual NGOs who devoted thier lives for the sake of peace, love and enlightenment. And their source of inspiration was only Allah not any government.

I should conclude by saying that if we spread the pure teachings of Islam to masses then thier is no need to contitute a new official body and give away salaries to "official sufis" at all.

Andaze bayaN garche bahut shokh naheeN hai
Shayad kay uter jae terey dil maiN meri baat
Ya wus'ate aflak maiN takbeer e musalsal
Ya khaq kay aghosh maiN tasbeeh o munajaat
Wo mazhab e mard e khud agah o khuda mast
Yeh mazhab e mullah o nabattat o jamadaat

Education is not the reason.Madrasshas need to be closed.I know several dozen Educated people (Very well educated) who completely support Talibans.

We are talking about the masses here, those uneducated masses that become a pawn in the hands of these educated bastards i would say who support militants for their own hidden agenda. Besides lets not forget the more education we have, the more aware the masses will become, meaning we can make a better decision while choosing our leaders.

Sufism is a major contributor to the spread of Islam in India, Simply because they invite the locals with something they can relate to Music. and instead of thrusting something down the throat like most hardline preachers and general preachers. They let things sink in and then bring the person in closer.

This is not a solution. Why not preach modernism, we are living in 21 century afterall and not the 7th century. Why not preach people how far behind we have fallen compare to western world. And this goes to all of the Southeast region. Education and scientific thinking must make precedence.

Do they know sufism is even harder than following the path of Shariat? What they know about sufism? Can they follow the path of Nizam ud Din Aulia, or Boo Ali Qalandar, or Data Ganj Bukhsh or Moulana Romi? Have they read Masnavi e Ma'Navi? or Kashaf ul Mahjoob? These folks dont even know the 'S'of 'Sufism'.
