Zardari for disbursement of support funds

By: Haq Nawaz | Published: September 02, 2009

ISLAMABAD - President Asif Ali Zardari Tuesday called upon the United States to expedite reimbursement of the 1.6 billion dollars of the outstanding payments in Coalition Support Fund (CSF), early passage of the Kerry-Lugar Bill and the legislation to set up Reconstruction Opportunity Zones (RoZs) in the war affected areas of Pakistan.

Inordinate delays in the reimbursement of CSF claims were not conducive for the continued fight against militancy, the President told a 3-member US delegation of Senate at the Presidency.

He insisted, “The US lawmakers should help speeding up the process of providing assistance in energy sector and also the proposed package of 2.5 billion dollars undertaken for the rehabilitation of reconstruction of the internally displaced persons.”

Briefing the media about the meeting, Spokesman to the President Farhatullah Babar said that President Zardari sought personal intervention of the visiting senators in expediting the reimbursement process and also in the supply of critically needed equipment including the gunship helicopters.

The Senators who called on the President included Carl Levin and Jack Reed both of the Senate’s Armed Services Committee and Senator Edward Kaufman, Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee, US Ambassador in Islamabad Anne W Patterson and senior officials accompanying the US senators were also present at the meeting.

The meeting was also attended by Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Nawabzada Malik Ahmad Khan, Secretary General Salman Faruqui, Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir, Senator Syeda Sughra Imam and Secretary Defence besides senior officials of the Foreign Office.

Farhatullah Babar quoted the President as the saying, “The payment of outstanding amount in the support funds is important for the security forces to continue the ongoing military operation against the militants.”

I think this is better to insist over trade free passage for Pakistan like Bangladesh,Jordan and Sri-Lanka.
Pakistan Export would be more than double if Free trade agreement would implement. We don't need any more Aid in that scenario.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Thursday once again demanded from the US to immediately release $1.6 billion under the Coalition Support Fund.

According to sources in the Ministry of Finance, US has to pay Pakistan money under the Coalition Support Fund and the payment of money by the US is quite sluggish but Pakistan cannot wait very long because the country’s economy is in a sensitive state.

Pakistan needs the funds to cater to its deteriorating economy and to fulfil the requirements of its defence and armed forces.

Sources say expenditures worth $100 million are being carried out every month in the war on terror and the funds provided by the US are quite slim as compared to the expenditures.

The last instalment provided by the US was released in the beginning of the prevailing year, after which Pakistan has not received any thing.

President Asif Ali Zardari during his visit to United States later this month will raise the issue with his counterpart Barack Obama and urge him to immediately provide finances under the Coalition Support Fund.—Online

Zardari seeks release of $1.6bn for terror war funding

Wednesday, 23 Sep, 2009

NEW YORK: President Asif Ali Zardari has urged the US government to reimburse the 1.6 billion dollars that Pakistan spent on fighting extremism in the tribal areas.

The United States pays Pakistan for the anti-extremist operations from a special account called the Coalition Support Fund. Pakistan has not been paid for more than a year.

President Zardari made this demand in two separate meetings with US officials including special envoy Richard Holbrooke.

President Zardari also called for an early realisation of about six billion dollars pledged to Pakistan in the Tokyo conference early this year where international donors promised to help Pakistan overcome its economic crisis.

The President also sought an early adoption of the Kerry-Lugar Bill that may bring in another 1.5 billion dollars of annual US assistance over a period of five years. — DawnNews

Is Zardari seeking this money for Pakistan or for his own Swiss account?
