What's new

Pakistan doesn't reopen border despite US apology

Iran ofcourse is not an option.

But NAto supplies from Europe will have straight line from UK to Afghanistan if u check the map.

Also its safer , no bomb blasts and no loss of lives.

Transit money Pakistan getting will be given to central asia.
Already good road networks are there.

So this was a move which should have been taken earlier.

Anyway better late than never.

And you never thought of the distance between the UK and Afghanistan and numerous other countries between the UK and Afghanistan?

A better option for NATO is Russia.

Benny, you think it is cheaper to pay transit money to one country or many (Central Asian reps) ?

secondly the westerly route may look peaceful now, but remember the area is still conflict prone, Azerbaijan Vs Armenia , Georgia etc.

But to me the bigger risk will be, if the supply is moved west, the war will move west also and NATO will not want that for several reasons.

1. obvious security reason, western countries will be under greater fear.
2. They will loose Pakistan to China!
3. As soon as the central asian reps become more crucial for NATO, rest assured the Russians will increase their influence as well, thus taking the stakes even higher.

I think apart from Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan and maybe another country the others are involved in NATO. (north Atlatic Treaty organisation).

They've been in discussions and there was an agreement indeed signed at the April [2008] NATO summit in Bucharest between Russia and Uzbekistan with NATO for the overland delivery of supplies to NATO forces [in Afghanistan],"

Also the new route passes through a lot of NATO countries .

The NATO has acknowledged the trucks are carrying medicines and food items.. not any weaponry or anything which are sensitive.

So NATO can easy procure food materials from the member nations on route which is better.

Its not as if NATO troops only eat food made in US.

So if they have some brainy ones out there they can surely quick fix the issue and move along..

Extensive Central Asian rail network can be easily used which is already there very close to Afghanistan in the north east side.

dont know aboutthe iran route...seems unlikely currently, but we cant say whats gonna happen in future...I for one would love too se that route opening for US....indirectly its going to benefit India.

Russia route seems more possible solution.

Isnt Russia a major oil producer now.? What better way to buy fuel from Russia and ship directly to Afghanistan. Same with Food and stuff. Weapons and Medical supplies can always be air lifted.

But I guess the Military planners in the US have much more exp in doing this than any one of us.;)

And Turkey a major NATO alley is so close to Afghanistan..

Soldiers can order turkey sandwich from there.

I had a feeling this would be coming since the news started evolving.

Day1

"NATO" admitting we violated air space. (they admitted themselves). Media knew that from them.

Day2

Airspace violation again

2 days of violations nothing happens in terms of protest.

Day3

Attacks and kills army men inside Pakistan

Uproar... Supplies blocked.... supplies torched

Day ....

New route

Advantages

No more dependency on Pakistan.

No transit money.

Complete control of Afghanistan and its minerals.:azn:

You might wanna check this with Taliban? :hitwall:

I was reading Indian newspapers and an Indian commented that oh well its good NATO/US should go for easy air route from India direct to Afghanistan

Those maps that show the "new path" are amusing, to say the least. The sheer logistics of transporting material across west Europe, East Europe, Central Asia - in other words, almost 1/4th of the world!

The Americans would be better off 'outsourcing' all their supply needs to Russia and Kazakhistan. Let the Russians and Kazakhs send material for a fixed fee. Anything which is sensitive, or which the Americans want specific American products, they can airlift into Afghanistan.

They had been talking about this options since last one year :)

anyway lets see. We have no issue with that if they change the route atleast we would have less weapons and smuggled goods going to militants here.

I dont agree. Kayani will have a stroke if this happens. This is pretty much the only major threat Pakistan can hold over USA's head at this time.

Look at it from Kayani's perspective.

1. Minor border violations by USA attacking AT via choppers etc

vs

2. Enstranged US which may have implications wrt bigger role for India in Afghanistan

Every one knows what will be more acceptable to Kayani..

One week down the line, every thing will be back to normal.. Both in terms of Supply lines as well as cross border drone and occasional chopper attacks..

Actually no.. They could just land the material in Turkey (med sea) and from their drive across Georgia(Russia), Russia(Russia), Kazakhastan(Russia), Turkmenistan(Russia) into Afghanistan.
