BBC News - Philippines seeks US muscle on South China Sea

'Vital area'
Protecting an oil rig will be one of the exercises the Philippines performs with the US military this spring. A Philippines delegation visited Washington in January to talk about enhanced US military support in the South China Sea.

"This area is vital to the United States," Chief of US Naval Operations Admiral Jonathan Greenert said recently. "It's been an area vital to our navy and our focus for decades, because of… the trade routes, the large economies."

Adm Greenert said the challenge was to keep trade routes open - and peaceful - while keeping belligerence to a minimum.

China's view is that the US should mind its own business.

"Any interference from outside forces or a multilateral discussion will only complicate matters, rather than resolving them," Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Weimin said in November.

China points out that the $30bn in trade the Philippines has with China could double in a couple of years. Or China could punish the country, as the Communist Party-owned newspaper The Global Times suggested, for turning to the US for more military muscle.

Another Global Times editorial warned that "small countries" like the Philippines and Vietnam should stop challenging China's interests or "they will need to prepare for the sound of cannons".

Not surprisingly, this kind of talk irritates Gen Sabban. He says he has doubled patrols of nearby waters over the past 18 months, but has not increased armed presence. He would prefer a peaceful solution. Still, he says, China should think before getting any more aggressive in these waters.

"Remember the Vietnam war, where a smaller country defeated a superpower," he says. "It's about the determination of a people to defend themselves."

And it does not hurt that another superpower stands ready to come to their aid.

PetroVietnam says oil activities normal in East Sea (south china sea).

The state-owned Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) said despite "complications" last year, it was business as usual for it in the East Sea.
Phung Dinh Thuc, the chief executive of PetroVietnam, which explores and drills oil in the sea, said at a press conference Monday that thanks to assistance from the ministries of public security, defense, and foreign affairs, its activities in the East Sea remained “quite smooth”

The company was operating within Vietnam’s 200-nautical mile exclusive economic zone, he said

On May 26 last year PetroVietnam vessel Binh Minh 2 had its exploration cables severed by a Chinese marine surveillance vessel some 120 nautical miles off the central Vietnamese coast.

Two weeks later Viking II, a Norwegian ship contracted by a PetroVietnam joint venture, was also harassed by Chinese ships.

Later a visit to China in October by Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong saw the signing of an agreement setting out a basic legal framework for negotiating and resolving sea disputes between the two countries.

China and Vietnam agreed to follow the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and the 2002 Conduct of Parties in the East Sea, also known as the South China Sea, while resolving disputes through negotiations.

China has already taken control of Taiwan by forcing them to re-elect their pro-China president, Ma Ying-Jeou. Now Taiwan is building up its military on Taiping Island, the only true island in the South China Sea (all other countries only have reefs).

From Taiwan, a PLA amphibious attack force can land on the northern tip of Luzon Island (the largest island of the Philippines) and attack southward with mechanized armor divisions toward Manila. Once we take Manila, then we will inflict our long-lasting punishment on the Filipino people for trying to steal our South China Sea!

Because we control most of the Spratly Islands. The Spratly Islands are controlled by Vietnam many centuries ago. China only had robbed some of our reefs since 1988.

then why are the spratly islands also claimed by brunei, philipines, malaysia and taiwan? in reality, south china sea cannot and will not be divided up equally among it's claimers, it's just not going to happen in the real world. it will eventually go to the strongest country in the region who has the capability of guarding it and maintaining it's security. maybe that country is vietnam, then again, maybe not.

Well, that's why small and weak countries like the Philippines and Vietnam seek support from U.S and other major countries...

so US will help vietnam take over south china sea? or will US use vietnam to take over south china sea themselves?

and i wouldn't call vietnam weak after it defeated and humiliated the most powerful country at the time.

You're wrong. China has no control over any islands in the Spratly Islands. Vietnam controlled most of the island. Taiwan, the Philippines and Malaysia control some islands in the Spratly Islands.

We only need US to stay neutral in the conflict between VN, ASEAN against China, in 1979, we fought against both US-China and still won , still defeat Pol Pot and beat up Thai Land, but we also suffered high casualties and super inflation(600-700 %).

Now, it'd better to convince US to stay neutral, and China alone will be a dead meat in SCS(east sea) :coffee:

Similar to the Philippines, the U.S also wants to help Vietnam, but Vietnam is still desirable of friendship with China, partly because of the communist ideology. If China continues to bully, Vietnam will become a second Philippines.

China does not bully Vietnam. Vietnam is bullying China. If Vietnam continues to bully, China will become a second USA or France.

In fact, both Vietnam and the Philippines wants to have good relations with China. However, China's constant bullying Vietnam and the Philippines. China claimed the waters just off the coast of the Asian countries of only about 50km...

You know, both France and the U.S, countries bullied Vietnam ago, they were knocked out by us although they are stronger than us so many times ...
Today, they are our friends.
