PLA navy's 'sharks' get stealthier, China on verge of producing 'world-class' nuclear submarines: Report

Aug 23, 2023, 16:29 IST

China’s nuclear-powered submarines, nicknamed ‘Sharks’ by the PLA navy, are becoming more stealthy and capable, according to a recent report by the US Naval War College. The report claims that China is on the verge of producing “world-class” nuclear submarines that can rival the Russian Akula-I class SSN in terms of propulsion, quieting, sensors and weapons.

The People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) is rapidly modernizing its submarine fleet, with a focus on stealth. The PLAN's new submarines are becoming increasingly difficult to detect, posing a growing threat to US and allied forces in the Indo-Pacific region.

One of the key areas of focus for the PLAN is the development of quieter submarines. Noise is one of the biggest challenges for submarine designers, as it can easily give away a submarine's position. The PLAN is using a variety of techniques to reduce noise, including new propeller designs, hull materials, and silencing technologies.

The PLAN is also developing submarines with more advanced sensor systems. These systems will allow the submarines to detect and track enemy ships and submarines at greater distances. The PLAN is also developing new weapons systems for its submarines, including torpedoes and cruise missiles.

The combination of stealth, advanced sensors, and powerful weapons is making the PLAN's submarines a formidable force. The PLAN's submarine modernization program is part of a broader effort to build a more capable navy. The PLAN is also developing aircraft carriers, amphibious assault ships, and other surface warships. The goal is to create a navy that can project power throughout the Indo-Pacific region.

China is reportedly developing its third-generation nuclear submarines, the Type 095 (Sui-class) SSN and the Type 096 (Tang-class) SSBN. The Sui-class is expected to be comparable to the Russian Akula-I class SSN in terms of quietness and performance.

The Tang-class is expected to carry JL-3 submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) with a range of over 10,000 km, which would enable China to target any part of the US mainland from its coastal waters. These submarines are likely to be built at the new Wuchang Shipyard in Wuhan, Hubei Province, which has a large indoor dry dock that can conceal the construction process from satellite imagery.

In addition to the technical challenges of designing and building stealth submarines, the PLAN also faces the challenge of training its crews. Submarine operations are complex and demanding, and the crew must be able to operate the submarine effectively and efficiently. The PLAN is investing heavily in training its submarine crews, and it is likely to continue to do so as it expands its submarine fleet.

The PLAN's growing submarine fleet is a major concern for the United States and its allies. The submarines could be used to launch attacks on US bases and ships, or to disrupt shipping lanes. The submarines could also be used to gather intelligence on US and allied forces.

The United States is taking steps to counter the PLAN's submarine threat. The US Navy is deploying more advanced sonar systems and developing new anti-submarine weapons. The US is also working with its allies to improve undersea surveillance in the Indo-Pacific region.

The competition between the United States and China for dominance in the Indo-Pacific is increasingly taking place underwater. The PLAN's stealthier submarines are a major new challenge for the US Navy, and the two countries are likely to continue to invest heavily in undersea warfare in the years to come.

how many times has JL2 and JL3 been tested ?

how many deterrent patrols has Chinese conducted since Type 091 was commissioned in 1974 yes that just shy of 50 years ago!

UK + US has tested Trident in over 200 launches over 3 decades of operational service validating and refining the nuclear systems

UK has 7 x SSN + 4 x SSBN and at sea deterrence since April 1969

HMS Audacious in April of 2023 completed what is believed to be the longest operational deployment of a nuclear submarine in the Royal Navy with 363 days at sea

its one thing building nuclear submarines its totally another thing to use them

and Chinas neighbours are not sleeping, AUKUS plans 12 x SSN and USN operates 54 x Hunter killers

South Korea and Japan between them operate close 50 x modern advanced SSKs

China has a long way to go before it can match the combined forces in the region

as i know. Now Britain doesn't even have a navy. Only big toilets (even all in the repair shop). so. If China rearmas Argentina. How would Britain surrender?

That is a fake headline

QE has done more days at sea than two Chinese casino Carriers combined have done in 10 years

It had a leak it was fixed and this is how it works

But how would Chinese understand this their warships are “queen piers”

China doesn’t have guts to arm Argentina

In 1982 they had very powerful navy and they lost

ah. But I heard that the UK BIG toilets don't even have carrier based aircraft. Is this true?

How does Britain's big toilet stand up to a rearmed Argentina?

Still more days at sea than Chinese casino Carriers

Uk send it’s Carrier all over the world

Chinese to afraid of breakdown and it won’t even leave South China Sea

Shows how much confidence China has in its casino carriers

I don't even need to tell you that 001 and 002 are patrolling around Japan. Just tell you. Even type 075 patrols Japan. China dispatched Type 075 to patrol Japan's Osumi Strait.

So. do British big toilets have the courage to patrol Russia? yes or no?

Once again. Chinese aircraft carriers can patrol Japan. Can British big toilets patrol Russia? :cheesy:

When British big toilets began patrolling Russia. Please make sure to remind me.

Japan ? What a idiot

It’s RIGHT next door to China !

Even QE has visited Japan and it’s approx 6,000 miles !

For China it’s less than 600

What a loser

The British toilet (the British call it an aircraft carrier) is only suitable for staying in a British repair shop. It doesn't even dare to patrol Russia.

China orders Britain to immediately return the Malvinas Islands to Argentina!

Unlike the British toilet navy. The Chinese naval fleet is in the whole world. Chinese navy patrols Alaska and the Aleutian Islands!

So. Can British big toilets patrol Russia?

Any monkey cash sail a boat

I am talking about aircraft carrier

But in China it’s called casino carrier

Rearming Argentina will slaughter the British Toilet Army. :cheesy:

Considering that the British big toilet doesn't even have a carrier-based aircraft. I don't know where you have the courage to talk about "aircraft carriers". Go back to your big toilet.

Were you born retarded or do you have to work on it ?

HMS QE has the largest 5th generation fighter air wing in the World

We are talking about the Royal Navy here not some cheap Chinese counterfeit casino Carrier which never left the South China Sea in over 10 years

What a loser you are
