New Delhi: Pakistan intelligence agencies claim to have foiled an al-Qaeda plot to assassinate President Pervez Musharraf. He's survived two previous attempts on his life.

The plot came to light after arrests of alleged al-Qaeda members in Karachi.

A large cache of ammunition and weapons was also seized from the arrested men who it appears had planned to blow up a bridge that leads from the airport in to the city during Musharraf’s next visit to the city.

Two more attacks were planned in case Musharraf survived the first one.

The arrested persons are also reported to have targeted army installations and foreign embassies and planned to kidnap influential personalities to press for the release of their comrades.

Reportedly, they have also told interrogators that their plans would be carried out despite their arrest as the group had been divided into smaller groups to execute the mission.

After the arrests, intelligence agencies have tightened security for prominent personalities and sensitive buildings.

After the completion of their interrogation, the arrested persons will be handed over to the Pakistan Rangers or police in a couple of days.

Musharraf has survived nearly half a dozen attempts on his life since he grabbed power in 1999, the last one in July 2007.
