Ram Kishen, 52, half-blind and half- starved, holds in his gnarled hands the reason for his hunger: a tattered card entitling him to subsidized rations that now serves as a symbol ofIndia’s biggest food heist.
Kishen has had nothing from the village shop for 15 months. Yet 20 minutes’ drive from Satnapur, past bone-dry fields and tiny hamlets where children with distended bellies play, a government storage facility five football fields long bulges with wheat and rice. By law, those 57,000 tons of food are meant for Kishen and the 105 other households in Satnapur with ration books. They’re meant for some of the 350 million families living below India’s poverty line of 50 cents a day.

Instead, as much as $14.5 billion in food was looted by corrupt politicians and their criminal syndicates over the past decade in Kishen’s home state of Uttar Pradesh alone, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The theft blunted the country’s only weapon against widespread starvation -- a five-decade-old public distribution system that has failed to deliver record harvests to the plates of India’s hungriest.

These political leaders are dangerous than killers....bunch of morons....

OMG!!! I would say, there is nothing wrong in backing maoists... It's better to follow them who kills few openly, rather than these political idiots who kills people in lakhs indirectly...

Not only that. Damage caused by fungus and rodents accounts for 20 million tonnes of food grain lost every year!

4.5 LAKH SACKS OF WHEAT in Uttar Pradesh, estimated to be worth Rs 25 crore, were damaged due to rains at the Food Corporation of India (FCI) godown in Ghaziabad, while more than 1 lakh sacks were left in the open despite enough space available in the Allahabad godown.

3 LAKH SACKS OF WHEAT in Haryana were destroyed in Sirsa warehouse due to floods. Despite flood warnings from the weatherman, no precautions were taken and the food grain continued to lie in the open and low-lying area

56,000 SACKS OF GRAIN in Gondia district of Maharashtra are left to rot in the open despite plenty of space available inside the FCI godown. According to officials, the grain was stored outside the warehouse because there was a space crunch when the shipment arrived in May.

The government acknowledges that food worth nearly Rs 60,000 crore is destroyed every year due to poor and insufficient storage facilities. This lost food is keeping millions of Indians hungry. To add insult to injury, the government spends about Rs 2.6 crore of the tax payers’ money to get rid of food grain that has rotted during storage.

Mera Bharat Mahan!

I dont think its right to blame politicians. Politicians come and go. The people who remains are pyramid of personnel managing FCI. They do the corruptions. These personnel are the common folkw living among us, who exploit their position.

Moreover GOI do not give grains for free. every one has to work for it, be it rich or poor. Even if govt. decide to give the grains to a poor man, there will be 5 related person (neighbour, relative) standing in a way to snatch this charity. Can you guess how much grains of BPL and others are misused and sold elsewhere. If the GOI announce 30 kg of rice per person at reduce rate, the distributor give him 20 kg and take the sign for 30 kg. And this distributor is no politician, he is a common guy living among us, exploiting the poor.
