An in depth look at the Port City that China is building in Sri Lanka. It's not in English but the video tells its own story. The Colombo skyline is developing beautifully and the views are amazing. Thanks China!

Looks so pretty. Love colombo.

I guess so, sometimes land reclamation is cheaper than buying land from their owners.

This is true, Jakarta port (Tanjung Priok) for instant can only be developed through reclamation project. We also have big refinery and chemical project in Tuban, East Java. Despite the location is in the east of Java (less industrialization compared to West Java), the project still get difficulty to get land from people there and choose to do reclamation instead to execute the plan.

President makes observation visit to Colombo Port City
Sun, Feb 16, 2020, 09:32 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Feb 16, Colombo: President Gotabaya Rajapaksa visited the Colombo Port City, which is officially known as Colombo International Financial City (CIFC) Sunday afternoon and observed the ongoing construction on reclaimed land.

Attention was drawn to the Colombo Port City plan at the National Law Conference which was inaugurated by the President on Friday.

The extension of the capital Colombo city changing the map of Sri Lanka is being built on land reclaimed from sea adjacent to the Galle Face Green between the southern edge of the new Colombo South Port and the Fort Lighthouse.

The China Communication Construction Company which has undertaken the reclamation of land and the construction of the basic infrastructure, is expected to spend US$ 1.4 billion for the project. Another US$ 15 million will be spent on the construction of building complexes.

The draft legislation relating to the new land has been referred to a special committee for study. The city will be declared as a special economic zone after the legislation is presented to Parliament. Colombo Port City will be the first special economic zone for services.

Ministry of Urban Development, Urban Development Authority and CHEC Port City Colombo (Pvt.) Ltd implement the project under a tripartite agreement.

Construction of the buildings will commence by the middle of this year. The first phase is expected to be completed in 2023.

LOL @ Thank you China. They made an investment and will get the return of it. Not that they did charity work. What can we expect from a sellout. I doubt the country can go anywhere with this kind of slave mentality.

Oh boy Sri Lanka is slowly selling its land to the Chinese. Mahinda is truly the most stupid president Sri Lanka ever had. During the regime of his family Sri Lanka got a huge amount of debt towards the Chinese.
Hopefully it wont end like some African countries who can not free themselves from the Chinese bondage.

It depends on how the Chinese behave, I think many would prefer to live as slaves in a developed area rather than masters in an undeveloped area.

This is not "selling". The land is on a lease and it's under the Sri Lankan law. You can't blame the Chinese for the incompetence of the Sri Lankan government. Current gov banned foreign construction companies from state projects. It's up to the country to create a healthy economic environment.

But Sri Lanka was doing quite well unlike the African nations. So it was unnecessary to get under the Chinese influence. Unfortunately Mahinda and his goons have sold the land to the Chinese to pour money into their own pockets. Sri Lanka has been so far the most developed region in South Asia. But I wonder how Sri Lanka will turn in the future. Hopefully it wont turn into countries like Afghanistan or some African nations
