KARACHI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) would organise a “Love Pakistan Peace T20 Cricket League” in various parts of the country from May 3 to 18, in which four provincial teams, one representing the centre, and the Afghan national team would participate, sources told ‘The News’.

The league is being organised on the directives of PTI chairman Imran Khan. PTI’s Insaf sports and cultural forum will manage the spectacle.

All leading national cricketers are likely to participate in this league, which offers handsome prize money.

The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where the PTI is the ruling party, will help the PT’s sports and cultural forum in the holding of this league.

Sources said that Imran Khan, the 1992 World Cup winning captain, is himself involved in the organisation of this T20 league. Former cricketers, including Javed Miandad, Mohsin Khan, Abdul Qadir, Moin Khan, Mansoor Akhtar, Manzoor Elahi and Shoaib Muhammad will also help PTI.

“All preparations for the tournament are in full swing and PTI chairman Imran Khan himself is monitoring the process,” chief organiser Iftikhar Ilahi told this correspondent.

Ilahi said that he had contacted PCB to get its help to organise the tournament and for selection of the teams of the four provinces and the center.

He said the PCB had agreed to support the initiative because it was the need of the hour.

The matches will be played in Peshawar, Quetta, Multan, Rawalpindi and Faisalabad.

Both semi-finals and the final will be played in Faisalabad.

He added that night matches would be essential part of this event. “Wherever floodlights are installed, we would have day-night matches,” he said.

He said that entry for the spectators would be free.

Ilahi said the Afghanistan Cricket Board had confirmed their team’s participation.

He said that Imran Khan would inaugurate the T20 league in Peshawar at Arbab Niaz Stadium.

Ilahi pointed out that for around 30 years not a single international cricket match had been organised in Quetta. “One can imagine the policies of our administrators and on the other hand the frustration of people who are desperate to see high-quality cricket.
