The United States has asked Pakistan to match its words with actions and follow up on its expressed commitment not to discriminate between terror groups and take action against the Haqqani Network in the wake of last week’s suicide gun and bomb attacks in Kabul that killed 64 people.

“We have consistently expressed our concerns at the highest level of the government of Pakistan about their continued tolerance for Afghan Taliban groups such as the Haqqani Network operating from Pakistani soil,” said Elizabeth Trudeau, director of US State Department’s press office during the briefing on Friday, Gulf News reported.

Afghanistan says Kabul attack was planned by Haqqani network in Pakistan

Her statement came after Afghanistan accused Pakistan of supporting groups who were carrying out attacks in the war-torn country.

On Friday, Dawa Khan Meenpal, deputy spokesperson for Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, alleged that “Pakistan still supports groups involved in fighting in Afghanistan.” He went on to allege that the April 19 attack, which left 64 people dead and over 350 injured, had been “planned by the Haqqani Network in Pakistan.”

But Trudeau said that the matter was raised again with Islamabad this week.

Kabul set to launch efforts to ‘isolate’ Pakistan

“After this week’s attack [in Kabul], we have pressed the government of Pakistan to follow up on its expressed commitment not to discriminate between terror groups regardless of their agenda or their affiliation by undertaking concrete action against the Haqqanis,” Trudeau added.

She, however, acknowledged that Pakistan has reiterated the commitment not to discriminate against terror groups.

“And we continue to call on them to live up to that commitment.”

Asked about the difference in the words and actions of Pakistan, Trudeau said that “we (the US) continue to encourage them (Pakistan) to have their actions match those words.”

Can the esteemed state department explain what US and Cronies(NATO) doing in Afghanistan? The number of forces there are doing what exactly? IS NATO answerable for its presence and the security of Afghanistan? can it bring ANY peace to any part of that country?

Can it do any thing other than shifting blame onto others for its failure?

While the extremist mindset and terrorist hordes need to be tackled all across the board, many Pakistanis are anxious to see what is being done about Fazlullah group which is based in Afghanistan and orchestrated the APS massacre?
Clearly this was a case where evidence of involvement was present and all parties agreed that he is in Afghanistan.
It seems all is not possible even for the combination of US coalition forces across the border...so pointing fingers without introspection and self analysis is not right.

Despite hundreds of thousands of troops being deployed, increased kinetic actions and many bloody battles; the TTP groups which we are fighting against are still able to orchestrate terrorist attacks...though less frequently.
The reality of this war is that the enemy has many small cells dispersed here and there without much in the way of a central HQ which can be neutralized to render the enemy incapable. Despite actions, the capability to carry out attacks is not completely eliminated unless the entire terror chain is disrupted across both countries. The Afghan Taliban and Al-Qaeda remnants are the key component in Afghanistan, whereas the TTP and banned sectarian outfits have been most damaging in Pakistan.
These terrorists cooperate with each other to survive, perhaps Afghanistan and Pakistan should collaborate out of necessity?

Haqqanis are being denied space in Pakistan since North Waziristan operation has started. This was also acknowledged by commanders on the US side since the operations started, however Haqqani network has major support in Afghanistan as well. A point conveniently forgotten somehow.
In wake of these challenges, Afghanistan also needs to work towards building a more stable partnership with Pakistan and should not succumb to blame games and pressure tactics just to divert attention from their own shortcomings in terms of an effective strategy of dealing with Taliban.
Afghanistan has been trying to talk to Taliban and then comes this attack, perhaps failure to bring Taliban to talks or contain them effectively has resulted in a frustration which is being taken out on Pakistan despite the broadening scope of Pakistan's operation against the terrorists who are a threat to both countries. Pakistan/Afghanistan cooperation is too valuable to lose through such finger pointing without any self admission of difficulties and cross border failures on Afghan/US part as well.
The fallout of a failure to partner more effectively shall be borne by both countries.
