Rahat Fateh Ali Khan detained over undeclared foreign currency

My tribute to Rahat ... hope he gets released soon.

Seems he is not arrested. He's just been detained for some questioning. Actually he'll end up making a statement which will be the basis for the investigation. Then he'll go check in to some hotel, till he is allowed to leave. There may be some follow-up questioning if needed. Since it is an 'economic' infraction; not too much to it. Later some fine or something on those lines may be possible. If that happens, he might try to 'up his asking rate' to recover his losses.

Hey Indo bros plz upload indian news channels news video......

When i saw the thread I thought he was dead, how came he got arrested,oh wait that is Nusrat fateh ali Khan, may be the customs official's may also be in same dilemma.

I think the event management should be responsible for what had happened there cause Rahat doesnt know about the Indian customs law and the money which was given to him at the airport which seems like it was done to save the taxes or trying to convict Rahat for customs law offence.
It was pretty bad management by the authorities and offcourse rahat should asked him about the minimum amount that a person may carry to travel from India.

i'm sure rahat had been to india before & filled landing cards enough times. it clearly specifies that you need to declare the amount to customs if you are carrying more than the specified amount!!

It is written on the back of every immigration form that one signs before entering India. He should have read. It is not a case of ignorance...

When any person arrives into India; either an Indian citizen or a visitor that person has to fill up an arrival card, with two parts. One for Immigration requirements and one for Customs requirements. The part for the Customs spells out the declaration requirements clearly. Rahat is not coming to India for the first time and he can read the instructions printed in English.

He can read-- he must have known these things-- he is a frequent flyer- not a rookie-- he knew it-- but he tried to smuggle the money-- tax free- if he had to give this money to LeT-- he should have done that from Pakistan-- it would have been much easier--

Pakistan Interior Minister steps into Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's detention case

Islamabad/New Delhi: The detention of Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan at the Delhi airport has caused concern back home in Islamabad. Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik has stepped in personally to look into the singer's detention over undeclared foreign currency.

Malik called up the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi and spoke with the envoy, Shahid Malik.

The minister asked for details about Rahat's detention at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. He has also asked the Pakistani High Commissioner to monitor the matter closely.

As per a statement issued last night, the Pakistan Interior Minister had said that he was looking into the matter.

Rahat was held at the Delhi airport on Sunday night for illegally carrying undeclared currency worth US $ 1.24 lakh. He had arrived at the national capital on a flight from Karachi when he was intercepted by personnel from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).His manager Chitresh Srivastava was also held.

The foreign currency was not declared to Customs officials after the immigration checks, a DRI official said. The troupe was on in its way to Lahore via Dubai by an Emirates flight, the official added.

"The DRI officers found altogether US $1, 24,000 which is equivalent to about Rs. 60 lakhs. US $24,000 were found from the baggage carried by Rahat while the remaining US $50,000 each were found from the baggage of two troupe members," Central Board of Excise and Customs Chairman S Dutt Majumdar said.

The recovered foreign currency included US $10,000 and US $8,600 in demand drafts and some Travellers Cheques, a DRI official said.

The singer will be produced in court today.

He was earlier too involved in a controversy when organisers of a concert in Gurgaon filed a police complaint against him in July last year for his failure to turn up for a show.

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, the 37-year-old nephew of legendary Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan has crooned several Bollywood chartbusters including the song 'Dil To Bachcha Hai Ji' from the movie 'Ishqiya' for which he won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer this year.

It is written very clearly on the custom declaration sheet, the one fills in the plane.."one has to declare all foreign currency if carrying over $10,000"
He filled 'nil' in the amount of foreign currency being carried section..thereby also committed a customs fraud.
Custom official were working on an anonymous tip off about him ..as he was flying from Karachi..where do you think tip off could be from?
