RIA Novosti - Russia - Russia to hand over 2 border islands to China in August

13:40 | 04/ 07/ 2008

KHABAROVSK, July 4 (RIA Novosti) - Russia could finally relinquish control of two border river islands to China in August, a senior Russian security official said on Friday.

Under the 2004 agreement, Russia is to hand over to China the Tarabarov and about half of the Bolshoi Ussuriysky islands (around 375 sq km or 145 sq miles) located at the junction of the Amur and the Ussuri rivers and close to a major Russian city, Khabarovsk.

General Valery Putov, head of the Federal Security Service's (FSB) Far East department, said the demarcation of the border section had been completed.

"Frontier checkpoints on the islands have been moved to a different location, where border guards will relocate in August," Putov said. "And a 10-km section of the border near Khabarovsk has been equipped with alarm systems, video surveillance cameras and thermal imaging devices."

The two islands - occupied by the Soviet Union in 1929 and referred to collectively in Chinese as the Heixiazi - were the site of several military skirmishes during the 1960s.

The 2004 agreement on the eastern sector of the 4,300-kilometer border, the world's longest land frontier, was signed after China agreed to drop territorial claims to the other islands around Khabarovsk. The deal put an end to a decades-long territorial dispute between the two states.

Russia and China signed border agreements in 1991 and 1994 delimiting the eastern and western sections of their frontier, but several minor sectors were left unresolved.

The agreement has not met complete support in both countries. Nationalists in Russia rallied against "ceding Russian territory," while commentators in Hong Kong and Taiwan criticized the document as sealing the loss of former Chinese territory.

Concerns were also raised in Russia about the proximity of the Chinese border to Khabarovsk. Russian officials said there was no military threat from the country.

That's really great. I hope that India and China can resolve their existing border disputes by similar small compromises.

Breaking News - China loses territory again

Monday, July 7th, 2008

Hei Xiazi Island; Russian forces have occupied this part of Chinese territory for nearly eighty years. According to a border treaty, between the CCP and Russian govt in nineteen ninety-nine and two thousand and four. This year in August, China will lose half of the Hei Xiazi Island to Russia forever.
Domestic and foreign commentators believe that even the CCP cannot get these territories back from Russia and they should’ve at least held on to it until the next generation. Thus, giving future generations of China the opportunity to resolve the land ownership issue. Today, the Communist authorities are apparently feeling guilty, because they did not specify the contents of that agreement. They neglected to filter out words such as: “Border of Sino-Russian” from the Internet and have failed to prohibit the public from discussing how the CCP surrendered territory under humiliating terms and how it betrayed the homeland.

Zhong Gaoren’s article from “Ming Pao” in Hong Kong questioned Jiang Zemin’s decision to sign the treaty. He talked about the series of unequal treaties between the Qing government and Russia; where over one million square kilometres of land, equivalent to ten Taiwan’s, has been signed over to the Russians. These actions were never clearly explained to the Chinese people.

In October two thousand and four, Hu Jintao also signed with Russian President Vladimir Putin the “Sino-Russian borders east section supplementary agreement”, and assigned half of Hei Xiazi Island to Russia.

As for the Russians, they say that they control churches, towers and other important facilities on Hei Xiazi Island.

Thanks for the map. What a grand task ahead of us to restore the proper border for the Motherland! :china:

We respect Russian and other Central Asian states' sovereignty, so no way to restore these land.

We should fight against Tibetan independence, East Turkistan movement and Taiwanese independence. :china::pakistan::sniper::usflag:
