That's why Russia won't do it and never had a intention to occupy those regions, Russian attempts to take major cities initially was just to use as bargaining tools for eastern Ukraine

That is nonsense. Ukraine is more on offensive than defensive. The war now is at stalemate. That’s a big problem for Putin. War is not cheap. Ukraine just needs to kill more russians than getting killed. Better technology will help Ukraine. At some point Russia will withdraw. They can’t sleep in trenches forever.

Russia has managed to hold ground in some Ukrainian lands but at a great cost to its war machine and economy. These losses will continue to mount each day because there is no indication that Ukraine will give up any time soon. I am not sure how this is such a win for Putin because he might have learned by now that he cannot order an attack on any country he wants to and continue to get away with it. Georgia was an easy target in 2008 but Ukraine has offered substantial resistance and it is a semi-regional power at best. Russia might face more problems if it manage to piss off US and its allies further.

I would be pretty embarrassed at this point in Putin shoes.
