A Eurofighter aircraft has crashed at Spain's Morón air base with one fatality, the Spanish ministry of defence has confirmed.

The combat aircraft, which was on a regular training flight, crashed into the ground "moments after take-off" from the base near Seville, according to the ministry's statement.

It was being piloted under dual control by a lieutenant colonel from the Saudi Arabian air force, who was killed, and a Spanish air force commander, who ejected before the crash.

The ministry says the Spanish pilot is "well" and required only a "basic" level of medical attention.

CITAAM, the Spanish body responsible for investigating military aircraft accidents, has despatched a team to Morón to identify the causes of the incident.

The Saudi lieutenant colonel was at the Spanish base after the two nations signed a Eurofighter training contract.

Saudi Pilot Killed in Fighter Crash at Spanish Base

SEVILLE, Spain – A pilot from Saudi Arabia undergoing training was killed Tuesday when his Eurofighter crashed at the Moron air base in southern Spain, but his Spanish instructor ejected safely, a Defense Ministry spokesman told Efe.

The plane was being flown by the Spanish officer, who was not injured in the ejection.

The accident occurred at the start of a training flight in the twin-seat warplane, which was carrying a Spanish air force flight instructor and a Saudi air force lieutenant colonel, the Defense Ministry spokesman said.

The plane began spiraling to earth for unknown reasons within seconds of taking off, the spokesman said.

The Spanish pilot, who needed only minor treatment at the base clinic, managed to eject before the warplane crashed, but the Saudi officer was unable to get out of the aircraft.

A team from the military aircraft crash investigations agency went to the Moron air base and is handling the inquiry into the accident.

The Saudi pilot was at the base under a bilateral training program designed to teach military aviators from the Arab country to fly the Eurofigther.

The Eurofighter, which is built by a European consortium formed by Spain, Italy, Germany and Britain, is a modern fighter and ground attack plane called the C-16 Typhoon by the Spanish air force.

The warplane entered service in Spain in October 2004.

The Spanish air force units that fly the plane are assigned to several squadrons of Wing 11 at the air base in Moron de la Frontera, located in Seville province.

The C-16 Typhoon, which is 15.97 meters (52 feet) long, has a maximum ceiling of 19,812 meters (65,000 feet) and a range of 3,500 kilometers (2,175 miles), with a top speed of Mach 2. EFE

The cause of the crash was not immediately known.

Spain Halts Eurofighter Operation

Spain has grounded its Eurofighter combat aircraft until it completes an investigation into a possible ejector seat problem.

The Spanish defence ministry took the decision a day after Germany grounded its entire fleet of Eurofighter jets as a precaution, according to AFP.

The UK Royal Air Force has resumed normal operation with its Eurofighter Typhoons after completing an urgent safety modification for the aircraft's Martin-Baker mk16A ejection seat.

Austria has also resumed Typhoon operations after problems with the ejection seat were resolved by specific pilot training and a simple manual modification to the ejection seat.

The UK, Austria, Germany, Italy, Saudi Arabia and Spain suspended Typhoon operations after a Royal Saudi Air Force pilot died ejecting from a Eurofighter at Moron air base in Spain.

Saudi Arabia: Britain Assures Riyadh of Typhoon Jets Safety

27/09/2010
By Turki Al-Saheil

Riyadh, Asharq Al-Awsat- A source affiliated with the British Defense Secretary Liam Fox’s visit to Saudi Arabia, told Asharq Al-Awsat that Britain has provided assurances regarding the safety of the Eurofighter Typhoon jets, recently received by the Royal Saudi Air Force, within the context of a military deal between the two countries.

Doubts had surfaced about the safety of the Typhoon jets, in the wake of the death of a Saudi pilot, as a result of a plane crash involving a similar type of aircraft during a training flight in Spanish airspace.

Informed sources quoted the British Defense Secretary, who yesterday concluded his two-day visit, as saying that the Typhoon jet which crashed “contained a simple design error”, stressing that Britain had amended the error in all aircraft of this type. Sources accompanying the British minister confirmed that he had yesterday visited an air base in Taif, where the Typhoon jets will be based.

Unverified reports over the past two weeks, speculated that Saudi Arabia, and other countries, have decided to suspend Eurofighter Typhoon jet drills, as a result of the death of the Saudi pilot.

However, according to information confirmed by sources close to the British Defense Secretary, Saudi pilots are continuing with the Typhoon drills.

Liam Fox, besides his main talks in Saudi Arabia, touched upon the subject of Typhoon jets. However – according to sources – this topic was not at the center of the talks he held with the Saudi Arabian political leadership, where subjects relating to the Middle East came at the top of the discussion agenda.

The day before yesterday, Mr. Fox met with the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, as well as Prince Naif bin Abdulaziz, Second Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, in separate meetings.

Nicholas Heath, a political official and spokesperson for the British Embassy in Saudi Arabia, confirmed to Asharq Al-Awsat that the British Defense Secretary had focused on Middle Eastern issues, in addition to the situation in Afghanistan, during his meetings in Saudi Arabia. He indicated that one topic discussed was ways to encourage Iran to show greater transparency, amidst the backdrop of uncertainty that surrounds its nuclear program.

Nicholas Heath described the talks between Liam Fox and Saudi officials as “very good”, highlighting that they reflected the depth of the relationship between Riyadh and London.
