Karachi

The Sindh Police has constituted another force to combat kidnapping for ransom and street crime cases. Called ‘Mohafiz Patrolling Force,’ the team will work in tandem with Madadgar-15. Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan inaugurated the force at the Garden Headquarters of the police.

Addressing the gathering, Ishratul Ebad Khan said that provincial police had achieved 100 per cent success in detecting the cases related to terrorist activities in Karachi, which are being tried in the courts.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the newly-formed Mohafiz Patrolling Force, he said, that the police have done a good job, however, raising the standards of the police force was essential to contain crime. He noted that Karachi was the economic hub of the country and with expansion and growth of the city’s population, the crime rate had also gone up proportionately.

He held some elements responsible for developing a sense of insecurity among the masses through street crime who were also challenging the police. The governor added that the specialised units of the Sindh police were already functioning and hoped that the addition of the Mohafiz Patrolling Force would significantly help combat various crimes committed on the streets.

Later, talking to newsmen, he said the incidents of violent clashes at the Karachi University were being investigated as per the law. The investigation police were carrying out a probe from various angles, he said and assured newsmen that the actual culprits would be nabbed and dealt with strictly.

He said that providing security to each individual was a difficult job. However, arresting the elements involved in anti-social activities could deter such tendencies and secure the lives and property of the people.

“The police should avoid being used for the political purposes and focus on discharging their basic job,” he said. On the occasion, the governor announced a cash award of Rs1 million to the force and another Rs1 million grant for the welfare fund of the Karachi police.

The PPO Sindh claimed that after the reorganising and restructuring of the force, up to 80 per cent of crimes of kidnapping for ransom and criminal activities in gang-war-hit Lyari area had been controlled so far.

Capital City Police Officer Karachi Azhar Ali Farooqi said that with a strength of 500 officials and men, the force is provided with 50 mobile vans and 100 motorcycles. The number of vans would be increased to 100 and then 200 in phases.

He said that under the community policing, the Dewan Group had gifted 100 motorcycles to Karachi police. Of these, half were provided to the traffic patrolling force and others to the Mohafiz Force. On the occasion, 70 out of 150 newly-procured prisoners’ vans were also handed over to the police.
