After nearly 40 years of social reforms to be ranked 73 is not impressive.. Granted 30 years of a debilitating civil war stunted the growth but still there is a long way to go to be satisfied with real progress

The 2015 HDR has in the statistical annex data on average annual HDI change per decade. It's quite interesting, looks like the war had very little effect on overall human development.

The war started at a very critical juncture of the country.. Throuout the 60's and 70's with the closed social economies the economic potential mwhich I think directly correlated to the living standards of the people was some what suppresed but with nthe change of govt and its reforms of a more open economy the country was at a stage of a massive boost.. Development would have accelerated in unprecedented scale.. In terms creating jobs, employment of high end, Services, R and D etc.. The war stalled that actually dragging back it andecade or so..

Just my two cents :-)

Who cares?

Sri Lanka is on a downward spiral. The country is a complete and utter mess.

10 months of 'yahapalanaya' and Sri Lanka has been turned into a nothing country that is going nowhere. Jobs created: zero. Foreign investment: zilch. Infrastructure: what's that? Major investment projects put on hold simply because they involve China. Money has been used to pay for massive subsidies, and the economy is being destroyed. A thief runs the Central Bank. Another thief is in charge of the Finance Ministry. The president wants millions of rupees for a car and a new palace. A financial crises now looms and separatists are gaining strength.

The government foolishly co-sponsors an anti-Sri Lankan resolution at the UN to create a special court to to try our soldiers as well as the political leadership that defeated the LTTE. Meanwhile, Colombo is getting dirtier by the day, rapes and murders are a daily occurence, the police beat and abuse the disabled and paddy is stored in international airports. What kind of insanity is this? The toyyo deserve a slow clap. 10 months of wasted time and wasted money. All that yahapalanaya has to show is the political persecution and harassment of rivals.

Sri Lanka Maintains High rank in Human Development Index

Sri Lanka has maintained its rank in the 'high human development category' at 73rd place according to Human Development Report 2015 released on Monday (14) in Ethiopian Capital of Adis Ababa by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

According to the Human Development Index (HDI) monitored annually by the Human Development Report (HDR), Sri Lanka out of 188 countries has gradually improved in human development reaching 0.757 in the Human Development Index (HDI) in 2014 from 0.679 in 2000. The world average in 2014 is 0.711 and South Asia averaged at 0.607.

Noting the positive relationship between work and human development, the Human Development Report (HDR) said In Sri Lanka most workers in the formal sector retire in their 60s, and a relatively small fraction are employed part- or full-time. But casual workers and self-employed workers tend to keep their full-time jobs for many more years.

Sri Lanka has integrated human resources and employment strategies in its National Human Resources and Employment Strategy, which began in 2014, to reduce unemployment and create more work opportunities. In Sri Lanka annual job growth is 12 percent.

Sri Lanka's nearest neighbor, India is ranked at 130th in the 'medium development' countries along with Bhutan at 132, Maldives at 104, Bangladesh ranked at 142. Under 'lower development' countries Nepal is ranked at 145 and Afghanistan at 174. Pakistan at 47 is in the High development category.

The top five countries in rank order of HDI are: Norway, Australia, Switzerland, Denmark and Netherlands, with no changes from 2014.

The Bottom five countries in rank order of HDI are: Niger, Central African Republic, Eritrea, Chad, and Burundi.

Bags full of garbage strewn across the road, crows peck away and flies swarm the area — these are the sights that greet passersby. This is amidst the recently paved streets and the newly constructed jogging tracks along the Mattakkuliya road, Elakanda.

The garbage trucks have not visited this area for nearly a month, the Sunday Times learns. As a result the area residents dump their trash on thestreets. Bags of garbage are also left by the side of the Hendala- Elakanda road.

The situation is no different in other parts of the Western Province, with Kalutara, Panadura, Dehiwala, Mount Lavinia and certain areas of Colombo facing similar garbage problems.

Yahapalanaya shining.

I agree, 73rd is nothing for a country like SL it should be at least 50 by now but Rural areas and North-East are still a major problem.

There haven't been much economic reforms since we opened up and most people still prefer socialist economic policies because everything gets handed to them.
The reaction of Doctors when GoSL tried to stop giving duty free permits for vehicles and when the govt allowed SAITM medical students to receive clinical training in selected govt hospitals for Rs.50,000 each and this is the reaction of Medical students in Government universities
