Sweden to recognize state of Palestine

October 03, 2014, Friday/ 18:44:05/ REUTERS / STOCKHOLM

Sweden's new center-left government will recognize the state of Palestine in a move that will make it the first major European country to take the step, Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said on Friday.

The UN General Assembly approved the de facto recognition of the sovereign state of Palestine in 2012 but the European Union and most EU countries, have yet to give official recognition.

"The conflict between Israel can only be solved with a two-state solution, negotiated in accordance with international law," Swedish PM Stefan Lofven said during his inaugural address in parliament. "A two-state solution requires mutual recognition and a will to peaceful co-existence. Sweden will therefore recognize the state of Palestine."

For the Palestinians, Sweden's move will be a welcome boost for its ambitions.

With its reputation as an honest broker in international affairs and with an influential voice in EU foreign policy, the decision may well make other countries sit up and pay attention at a time when the Palestinians are threatening unilateral moves towards statehood.

However, there is likely to be strong criticism of Sweden from Israel, as well as from the United States and the EU, which maintain that an independent Palestinian state should only emerge through a negotiated process.

Within the EU, some countries, such as Hungary, Poland and Slovakia recognize Palestine, but they did so before joining the 28-member bloc.

If the center-left government fulfils its plans, Sweden would be the first country to recognize Palestine while being a member of the European Union.

The Social Democrats and Greens hold a minority of seats in parliament and the incoming centre-left government is likely to be one of Sweden's weakest for decades.

The former center-right government would not recognize Palestine as the Palestinian authorities did not control their territory.

The Palestinians want an independent state in the West Bank and Gaza, with its capital in East Jerusalem. While Gaza's boundaries are clearly defined, the precise territory of what would constitute Palestine in the West Bank and East Jerusalem will only be determined via negotiations with Israel on a two-state solution, negotiations which are currently suspended.

They better do it quickly, because most likely this government
will have to resign in about one months time,
when they can't get their budget approved.
The former government is then likely to get a new chance,
or there will be a new election, and while they also
support a two state solution, they feel that recognition
is a bit premature, since Palestinians do not exert control.

Situation is a bit volatile at the moment, to say the least.

The late Yitzhak Shamir, from AP

Israeli president Shimon Peres is calling the late Yitzhak Shamir, dead at 96, a “brave warrior.” What does that mean? It means he used terrorism with very important political consequences. As head of the Stern Gang, Shamir authorized the assassinations of Lord Moyne, the British minister in Palestine, in 1944, and Folke Bernadotte, the U.N. envoy (and Swedish count) in 1948.

The Bernadotte murder is particularly important: Bernadotte wanted to internationalize Jerusalem and limit the borders of the new Jewish state. His murder helped shift partition from 55 percent of Palestine to the Jewish state to 78 percent.

That has nothing to do with it...

How stupid are they?
When Palestinians run the strip, call it Palestine, but not beforehand.

I am not surprised, you too won't be surprised by if you know the internal politics of Sweden.

Something positive. I hope it helps in bringing Israel to negotiating table.

Reading, the statement I think it means that they state that as soon as successful negotiations between
Israel and Palestinians are concluded, Sweden will recognize the new state. I.E. nothing short-term,
and a low-cost compromise to give something to the Environmental party in the current negotiations
between them and the Social Democratic party for a coalition.
And, as said, they will probably be resigning before X-Mas, since they won't get their budget approved.
Would be really surprising if they somehow managed to stay.

I think Sweden should neither recognize nor de-recognize this. Sweden has always taken pride in not involving in others' concerns. It would be best if it keeps that balance.
