Tata, Leyland woo Army orders - Hindustan Times

With the controversy surrounding Tatra trucks shaking up the defence vehicle industry, competitors are looking to cash in on the opportunity. Army chief Gen VK Singh recently kicked up a storm saying he was offered a Rs 14-crore bribe to sanction an order for 600 Tatra
trucks.

Tatra’s monopoly over the 8X8 tank-transporter trucks is under challenge already, as Indian truck makers Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland have been permitted to participate in the bidding for the first time ever.

“Three vehicles — Tata, Ashok Leyland and BEML’s Tatra trucks — are under trial,” said an industry official involved in the defence vehicle business for two decades.

“But Tatra is in a fix since they are quoting a huge price. Indian manufacturers are in a position to supply superior products at a much lower price.”

“Yes, Tata Motors is participating in the bid,” a spokesperson for the company said.

Tatas will showcase their “8X8 Command and Control Container”, primarily used as a missile system carrier, air-defence weapons platform and missile firing unit. A spokesperson for Ashok Leyland , when contacted, said, “We cannot give answers to your query today.”

Tatra trucks, assembled by defence ministry undertaking Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML), are priced above Rs 90 lakh. Tata and Leyland trucks are likely to be 15-20% cheaper.

It is learnt that there is a requirement for 550 such vehicles, which will be inducted within a year once the trial is over. In the wake of the controversy, the Army may go for re-tendering and Volvo Eicher and AMW may jump into the fray.

For 2012, apart from tank transporters, the Army requires 1,400 light armoured vehicles, 1,200 light protected patrol vehicles and 1,600 infantry mobility vehicles, with an approximate valuation of R2,500-crore.

Till date, Leyland has supplied 65,000 Stallion trucks to the Army. Tatas have supplied around 25,000 vehicles.

Mahindra Defence Systems has mine-protected and light-combat vehicles.

Leyland is it really Indian company? Hindujas are based in England.
There is another company which makes trucks and allied vehicles for army and civilian purpose. "URAL" is the name, I think based in Calcutta. they have had Russian Trucks made available for army.

AFAIK there are no URAL trucks in IA, but they have a plant in WB and Gen Singh wanted to also give them to chance supply vehicles to IA which kicked off all this bribery issue.

Where did this came from ??? I think IA first look towards more important projects like T72 modernization, artillery, induction of various SAMs like VSHORAD, QRSAM, MRSAM, ATGM, M777, LUH, new MBTs like T90AM or Arjun mk2, BMP2 modernization, assault rifle and carbines, new BP jackets and ballistic helmets, UAVs, Skyshield Short Range Air Defence system etc.

Guys looks like Tata has gone ballistic this time...

Rather pocuring vehicles from Tatra, companies like TATA and Mahindra must be allowed to create this vehicles by providing R & D funds.

It is 30% cheaper than TATRA VECTRA that India is importing at exorbitant cost. Needless to say, some guys are making a pile of kickbacks here.

he said about corporate office(chennai) and u are talking about production unit(hosur) .....

many believes Ashok Leyland is a "Indian" company. it is still a British brand owned by Hinduja group HQed in London. You can see that this group also owns HCVs like Optare brand overseas.

if TATA is 15 - 20 % cheaper then TATRA , then its a lie , Ashok Leyland 8x8 as per a Ashok Leyland employee should cost around 25k to 35k , and TATRA is 88k a pop , so that means that TATA is overcharging and they do that do all their customers since most of their trucks have engines , axiles and other important stuff made by American and European subsidizer companies in India

True. Many PSUs treat IA as a cash cow to keep themselves afloat and at the same time restricting private participation in defense matters citing security concerns.
