The strange case of the cricket match that helped fund Imran Khan’s political rise

Welp proves my point yet again, what's the difference between all the parties when they got the same sketchy benefactors from Malik Riaz to this guy now...

Abraj Group's owner is Pakistani. Any funding from his group is thus Pakistani not foreign
Name one country that calls funding by its own overseas Pakistanis "foreign funding"
🤣

According to laws in Pakistan Political Parties can not obtain funds from local companies let alone foreign countries.

Pakistan is not the only country where funding of political parties from foreign sources is prohibited. An international political finance database of some 180 countries indicates that 123 or 63 per cent of countries prohibit foreign funding of political parties in one form or the other. A slightly less number of countries — 103 or 57pc — do not allow foreign funding to individual election candidates as well. A greater degree of international consensus, however, seems to exist on prohibiting corporate funding to political parties as 128 or 71pc of countries do not allow funding of political parties by businesses and corporations.

Regardless of the amount, foreign funds received from foreign nationals may render a party ‘foreign-aided’.

Pakistani laws have all along prohibited foreign funding of political parties and election candidates. The prohibition, which was first spelled out in the erstwhile Political Parties Act (PPA) 1962, continued in the Political Parties Order (PPO) 2002 and has now been included in the present Elections Act 2017. Although, there have been some minor though significant variations in the three laws, funding of political parties and candidates from foreign sources is clearly disallowed in all of them.

So PTI took prohibited funding. Party cannot be ban for this. As per law election commission will demand to return the prohibited funding amount. And that's the end of it

  • FT report reveals Arif Naqvi donated $2.12m to PTI.
  • Fawad terms FT report "Israel-backed propaganda".
  • Abbasi demands Khan provide details of transactions.
The PTI Friday defended Pakistani businessman Arif Naqvi, who is facing corruption charges in the United States, as the government criticised PTI Chairperson Imran Khan for receiving funds from the Abraaj Group founder after a damning Financial Times report.
As the country awaits the verdict reserved by the Election Commission of Pakistan into the PTI's prohibited funding, an expose by the Financial Times has blown the lid off Pakistani tycoon Arif Naqvi's involvement in the party's finances and how a significant portion of its funding in 2013 was of foreign origin.
According to the report, "Naqvi transferred three instalments directly to the PTI in 2013, adding up to a total of $2.12 million".

In response, PTI Senior Vice President Fawad Chaudhry asked local media not to portray "our people as villains", as when a Pakistani Muslim's influence crosses a certain benchmark, it is not welcomed by the "Israeli lobby".

"Arif Naqvi's Abraaj Group became a $14 billion company. And when any Muslim and especially a Pakistani Muslim's influence crosses a certain limit, then it isn't welcomed by the Israeli lobby".
"Why should we become part of a propaganda campaign when we know it's Israel-backed?"
In a separate statement, Fawad said that the PTI demands that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) should announce the verdict in all three parties' — PTI, PML-N, and PPP — funding case be announced at the same time.
"The PTI has submitted the details of more than 40,000 donors to the ECP. Overseas Pakistanis, just like they support Pakistan, they also support PTI," he said.

Abbasi slams Khan, demands details of transactions

Talking to the media outside the ECP office in Islamabad, senior PML-N leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said that the government has requested the election commission to reveal the details of funds that Khan's party received so people can see it for themselves.
"Yesterday, an institution like the Financial Times reported that Arif Naqvi held a match in London. Arif Naqvi told the participants that their participation money would go to a charity."
The FT reported that the guests — who participated in Naqvi's "Wootton T20 Cup" — were asked to pay between £2,000 and £2,500 each.
The former prime minister alleged that Naqvi donated Rs55 million into the bank accounts of PTI. "...but PTI provided no trace of those transactions."
He further alleged that Khan's party received funds from companies in the United States that are established in California and Texas. "If Khan's hands are clean, he should provide details [of transactions] since day one."

By accepting funding from foreign companies and government officials PTI is "Forein-Aided Political Party"

PPA 1962, while defining a foreign-aided political party, included “substantial portion of its funds from foreign nationals” among the attributes of foreign-aided political party but PPO 2002 and now Elections Act 2017 omitted the word “substantial” from the relevant provisions of the laws and substituted this with another word “any”. This change seems to be ominous in the sense that even a very small amount contributed by a foreign national can include a party that falls within the definition of a “foreign-aided political party” indicating serious consequences. The same phrase from PPO 2002 has been used in the current Elections Act 2017.

There can be further and more serious consequences in case it is confirmed that a party has accepted funding from a foreign source. Section 212 (1) of the Elections Act, 2017 states that “Where the Federal Government is satisfied on the basis of a reference from the Commission or Information received from any other source that a political party is a foreign-aided political party … the Government shall, by a notification, in the official Gazette, make such declaration”. Sub-sections 2 and 3 of this section further state that the Government shall refer the matter to the Supreme Court within 15 days of making the declaration and when the Supreme Court upholds the declaration made against the party, such political party shall stand dissolved. Section 213 explains that the elected legislators who are members of a dissolved party shall be disqualified for the remaining term of the legislature.

Same FT reports say your Nawaz Sharif Mafroor took 20 million dollars in bribes from Arif Naqvi
