Cooperation from Strength: The United States, China and the South China Sea

Washington, January 9, 2012 — The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) released today Cooperation from Strength: The United States, China and the South China Sea, a study of the most salient issues affecting American interests in the South China Sea: competition over maritime rights, China's bilateral and multilateral diplomacy, challenges to international law, natural resources and partnership building.

CNAS also launched an online portal, Flashpoints: Security in the East and South China Seas, which includes a comprehensive map and timeline of significant disputes, overlapping claims and potential flashpoints that will serve as a hub for reliable data and analyses on the East and South China Seas to promote broader international information sharing. The Flashpoints portal also features the first of a series of bulletins authored by voices from the region that will provide timely analysis and information on security issues in the East and South China Seas.

The US are turning their focus on Asia-Pacific. Freedom maritime in the South China Sea is the national interest of Americans. China can't be monopolized by bullying smaller countries around as Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei...
International laws must be executed on South China Sea...

Why don't you show Vietnam's claims?

Anyhow, we will maintain maritime freedom by ourselves. We also ask for maritime freedom in the Gulf of Mexico and in Pudget Sound.

Georgia and South Korea were America's "allies". :azn:

Yet the USA did not help... when Russia invaded Georgia in 2008 and annexed their territory. And they did not help, when North Korea blasted a South Korean warship to pieces and bombarded their territory.

If they see a better deal for themselves by abandoning these nations, they will not hesitate to do.

Yes, Vietnam and Malaysia had jointly launched the 200 nautical waters maps of each country and submitted to the United Nations. It matches the blue line under Law of the Sea UNCLOS 1982 on the map. Every island in South China Sea only waters 12 nautical miles. The map above is taken from BBC Vietnamese.

We defeated pro-independence forces in Taiwan, now we are free to turn our attention to South China Sea.

We are building up our Type 056 corvettes and aircraft carrier battle groups. Soon we'll be ready to defend our South China Sea against the incursions of any foreign naval power.

As for Vietnam and Philippines, China will blow away their military forces and land ground troops in their cities to show their population who is master of East Asia!

I would truly welcome that change!

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said Washington is committed to the defence of the Philippines, amid rising tensions in the South China Sea.

She was speaking after talks with her counterpart Albert del Rosario.

She said the US would honour its mutual defence pact with Manila and offer the Philippines affordable weapons.
