REGARDLESS of what the Awami League-led government would like to have the people believe, India has thus far appeared apathetic, if not antipathetic, towards Bangladesh’s interest since independence — geopolitical, economic or otherwise. The ‘strategic informal alliance’ that India has forged with Myanmar for settlement of their disputes with Bangladesh over maritime boundary is the latest manifestation of the characteristic antagonism that New Delhi apparently nurtures towards Dhaka. According to a report front-paged in New Age on Monday, the ‘strategic informal alliance’ was forged during preparatory meetings on the visit of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe to India early this year. The refusal by both India and Myanmar to send their delegations on return visits in April and June respectively for expert-level bilateral talks on maritime boundary seems to be the immediate outcome of the alliance. It appears that India has managed to take Myanmar into its fold, to put Bangladesh in a tight corner vis-à-vis negotiations on maritime boundary. If it is a friendly gesture, one wonders what an act of hostility by India would look like.

In fact, it increasingly seems that only the AL-led government and its crony ‘international relations experts’ see friendly gestures in the many decidedly unfriendly, if not downright hostile, actions of India these days. Needless to say, the list of such unfriendly actions is rather too long. While the AL-led government trumpeted that the visit of the prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, to New Delhi in January and the consequent Dhaka-Delhi joint communiqué had marked the beginning of a new era in the bilateral relations between the two close-door neighbours, thus far the Indian government has not only not shown any willingness to resolve the irritants in bilateral relations that it itself has created and nurtured all these years—sharing of the waters of the Teesta and other common rivers, exchange of enclaves, demarcation of territorial boundaries, non-tariff and para-tariff barriers to exports of Bangladeshi products, fencing of borders, to name the obvious few, but also appeared eager to create additional problems for Bangladesh. The Border Security Force of India continue with the killing of Bangladeshi civilians on the border at regular intervals and also orchestration of incursion of Indian national into Bangladesh territory for harvesting of crops and fishing.

Meanwhile, the bilateral agreements that India has signed with Bangladesh so far seem expressly geared towards protecting and furthering its own interests—economic and geo-strategic. The deal under which the Exim Bank of India will provide the government of Bangladesh with a $1-billion line of credit is a case in point. Equally one-sided has been the agreement on transhipment of Indian goods from west to northeast India. Worse still, New Delhi is now pressuring Dhaka to waive duty on over-dimensional consignments. Still, the AL-led government has persistently propagated that the agreements offer tremendous economic benefit for Bangladesh, which is tantamount to deception, if not downright betrayal.
It will be perhaps foolhardy to demand that the incumbents should desert their pro-India policies and forcefully negotiate with India bilaterally, keeping national interest in mind. Hence, it ultimately is up to the conscious and conscientious sections of society to try and debunk ‘friendly India’ myth that the AL-led government has so diligently tried to create. To that end, they need to help people at large discern India’s hegemonic attitude and objectively analyse its record of persistently trying to undermine Bangladesh’s interests.

Snub mode on: So called friendship is strengthened if you have some thing to offer or something to jeopardize. Bangladesh has plenty to offer same like India. Given Indian's stands with Pakistan the later has no merit as far as India is to pay serious attention. India can afford animosities and Bangladesh can try its luck. The ruckus creating value to India of Pakistan is far more lower than China, Bangladesh can estimate where it stands.
....
However reading Bangladesh's foreign policy a wisdom and far sight is very visible, not to the likes of some superfluous over cautious nationalist though. How Bangladesh has learnt from the events happening in Asia specially Islamic nations, its hate and love relationship with India like any typical aspiring nation, who knows how to pull the best out by creating constructive pressures, stable economy and many great achievements in export, education et al are proud highlights of this young nation's resume.

No body is friend in geo-politics. Bangladesh should grow up (i reckon is grown up already, but not many posters) and stop ridiculing its neighbor. Declaring doomsday every day due to diplomatic differences is foolish and uncalled for. There are no free lunches, if Bangladesh can afford to live in isolation, India as an enemy then i am sure Bangladesh do has the stamina to opt laborious diplomatic channels on different intriguing issues with India.

No one in Bangladesh trusts India and no one feels that India is a friendly country. But, the politicians, even who project themselves as anti-Indian, understand better the geopolitical and economical position of today's Bangladesh. They have to keep on shaking the Indian hands until BD becomes an economically strong nation. A strong economy is a pre-requisite for a strong country in every sense of the word. An untimely try to do arm twisting will backfire. Only jargons will not build our nation. Hollow jargons will destroy whatever we have achieved so far, and the possibility of becoming an economically strong country will be lost forever.

Big words and also smells the same bullying attitude which BD should not bow down to. Simple as that.

BD's strategic value/importance if big enough that India should not take it for granted neither BD should trust India much. Keeping in view More important countries like China, BD have more chances of bilateral benefits by going along China

Let me change a few words in your post and then it will reflect many Pakistanis' attitude towards Afghanistan...as I have witnessed here on PDF. In fact i have seen words more or less such as 'If Afghanistan want to progress, it will have to do as we wish.'.

Nations are always guided by self interest, that is the way it has always been and always will. ALL nations always act in self interest. India does it and so does Bangladesh. If a nation is friendly, does it imply that it will abandon its core national interests or those of its citizens in order to demonstrate its 'friendliness'?
Russia is a friendly country, but Russia sells weapons to China. Russia also hikes up the cost of the carrier Gorshkov and delays the project. The Chinese premier says that India is a friendly country but China supplies arms to Pakistan and issues stapled visas to citizens of Indian Kashmir. Isn't Pakistan the biggest non NATO ally of the US? Why then does the US carry out drone attacks on Pakistani soil? Apart from selling weapon systems to India? Look at the inter play of national interests between prominent EU nations like UK, France or Germany. Aren't they friendly to one another? Yet statements by leaders are sometimes full of venom. Any idea how many Mexicans die trying to cross over illegally into the US? Are the USA and Mexico enemies?
There is no room for naive and childish emotions in Geopolitics and foreign policy. Nations have to do what is in their best interests, sometimes, these actions may appear unfriendly to the uninitiated and uninformed. Ultimately the governments in a democracy are answerable to their citizens.
Bangladesh opted for an international arbitration for delineation of maritime boundaries instead of a mutual agreement, they did so because they thought that it was in their best interests to do so but there are some who may view this as an unfriendly act. If India and Myanmar are acting in cohesion in this matter then it is obvious that their national interests converge on this issue. It is laughable to imagine that India may have somehow coerced the Myanmar government into siding with it while going against the Myanmar's national interests. If they are speaking the same language, it means that it suits them to do so.
While it may cause annoyance and disappointment in certain quarters, it is not necessarily a deliberately hostile act by either India or Myanmar. All parties are acting in their best self interests here. That should be clearly understood.

Hilarious thread LOL! What's with BNP Jamaati guys calling us a threat round the clock? None of you represent Bangladesh as a whole and as long as your government doesn't open hostilities towards us, we don't care.

As for "taking over northeast" please don't make us laugh.

You're welcome to try it at your own peril.
