Tinder box - Pakistan :A discussion with MJ Akbar !!

Dude, it's actually you who is in denial. Let's say all that he is saying is true, can you or any of your well-wishers do anything about Pakistan? No. Now time for reassessment on your part.

"One dog barks at something and a hundred bark at his sound"
Atleast barking dog alerts his master against the thieves.I'm worried wout the lazy dogs who just sleeps and opens one eye just to see whats going on around it meanwhile the burglar does his job of stealing and destroying the house.

An eloquent but contrived assessment of Pakistan... to do the usual self fellatio.
Good points raised.. yet debatable enough to not be grouped as facts.
It is laughable that he claims that there is no dirt shoveled in India upon other religions when it is reflected by not just certain party members .. but demonstrated in full enthusiasm by most Indian members here.

India is a constitutionally secular state but there is only so much a constitution can do. Individuals can never be really secular and the prejudices you see displayed are drawn from that. How that reflects on the Indian state and its constitutional provisions is not very clear.

Btw, the book is a good read.

I suggest pakistani friend read Mj Akber's book called tinderbox : the past and future of pakistan.

Interesting video that again displays M.J.Akbar as a "thinking journalist"; actually such "thinking journalists" end up being "chroniclers of their Times".

This has been a keynote of Akbar from the days that he started 'The Telegraph' in Calcutta (the then moniker that Kolkata carried) which came as a breath of fresh air in the 1980s. That was in fact my first introduction to Akbar during frequent and longish stays there. One may not agree with ALL of his views; just as I do not. @Manas, do read one of his first books "Riot after Riot" which reports on Caste and Communal violence in India. It is an eye-opener. And is part of my library.

One can react to Akbar in any way that one may wish to. And I see that here already. But that does not detract in any way from the merits of this thinking, expression or even his narrative. @Oscar, that privilege (of disagreement) extends to you as well. Though your present infatuation with 'fellatio' confounds me (it has appeared at least 3 times in your recent posts on this forum as has 'scrotum'). The journey from "Cerebral to Visceral" is a rather looong one, dear Oscar.

@muse; I would request you to sight this video too. I look forward to your views on it.

Denial about what????? I don't think Indians would like to do anything about Pakistan. It's in the self destruct mode anyway! At least that's what the world is saying! :pop:

World at large and India have been saying this for a long period of time, at least for as long as I have been on this planet. Sit back, get some popcorns and shove it down with a chilled soda. Nothing is going to happen. If something does happen, you won't be enjoying that cola either.... we'll make sure....... :pop:

@Hyperion, that bit coming from you does not make sense. Though there are enough Snotties here who are prone to break into that refrain.
Both you and I know that Pakistan is'nt going any where else from where it is. The only point of concern is the down-ward spiral that seems to be apparent in parts of Pakistan. That is certain to hurt Pakistan and Pakistanis much more than anyone else; though there will be some spillover else where. But other people are girding up to face upto even that eventuality; the question that remains is this: is Pakistan?

Mate, it has been in a downward spiral for the past 30 years. I know it. We know it. I live there, I know it's people it's culture, put it simply I know it's pulse. No things are NOT anything close to the propaganda being perpetuated. There is a lot of wiggle room for society and country to recover. I have witnessed too much sh*t around the planet to know better. We are not there yet, not even close.

Blame that on late night discussions with a drunk Norweigian on Ron Jeremy and the Speculative finances of the global pornographic industry.. Somehow that guy has the ability to return to the topic from subjects as diverse as HALO and Deep sea drilling.. so some of it has rubbed off..

Also it is a more polite way of indulging in obscene defamation.

As for the disagreement with him.. the question is not of his eloquence and matching bits and pieces.. but that his broad sweeps leave too many loopholes which I am not sure how he backs up in his book..until one has read that.. One cannot believe him.. but can discount his interview.

Is Ron Jeremy still around?

Though on that other subject requiring some (acrobatic dexterity?); Linda Lovelace would be more apposite.
After imbibing of "some wee drams" of Scotland's finest, probably any subject would be kosher. And defensive. Even in a polite way.

wait isn't MJ Akbar a muslim ? Then Why is he bad mouthing the land of pure ? Maybe as learned he is, he may not be believing in ummah :woot:
