Truth vs Hype this week is from Kashmir, a state where every debate is fiercely polarised, Armed Forces Special Powers Act, being no different. When Omar Abdullah suggested that the footprint of the Act be slightly reduced, the Army reacted with vehemence. They said that the security landscape of Kashmir was not ready for even a slight relaxation of the Army's special powers. There is little doubt that the Valley has ended one of its most peaceful summers. But could a partial rollback of AFSPA reverse that? The Army dismissed claims that the Act gives legal sanction to hundreds of human rights abuses. There is little doubt that the armed forces are guilty of violations. But what is the scale, and is the Act alone to blame? This week, we attempt to deconstruct, as dispassionately as possible, Kashmir's AFSPA riddle.

Truth Vs Hype: Kashmir - The riddle of AFSPA

Now is the best time to remove AFSPA. There is very low terrorism now, with record number of tourists visiting the valley.
Army wants to keep power because it fear situation may reverse. If it does, the act can be enforced again.

I think government is thinking of removing AFSPA in some of areas where there is low threat..
But Army's view is also not bad..

Army wants to play safe and maintain status quo. But it is not good for local population, and it is not normal. They should slowly handover duty to CRPF and JK police which are equally good in CI operations.

Do you think the jawans are puppets that the Govt can toy around them at will ?

You try something, it goes horribly wrong..then you call the Army in to clean up your ****..the Army sacrifices 1000s of its soldiers in serving the nation and correcting the blunders of the politicians....it somehow manages to bring in a semblance of law and order and you immediately want them to go.

Now if tomorrow something happens then again you would want the Army to come in and start from ground zero ?

The Army is the prime stakeholder in assuring the security in J&K and as such it's analysis/concern should be given the prime importance not some coin sized bindi wearing jhollawals in the AC confines of New Delhi. They are ones facing the bullets.

You want AFSPA to go ?

Make the kashmiris agree that Kashmir is an integral part of India and then the Army will move out.

Unless and until the sone pelting Azadi mongers and their more violent terrorist counterparts exist in Kashmir, AFSPA should be there.
