Turkey earns $1.69 billion through hazelnut exports

Turkey, the world's biggest hazelnut supplier, has earned $1.69 billion from the 2013-2014 hazelnut export season through exporting 221,731 tons of hazelnuts in 10 months.

More than 164,000 tons were exported to EU countries through the season which began on 1 September 1, 2013 and ended on 31 June 31, 2014, according to the Black Sea Hazelnut and Products Exporters' Association on Tuesday.

Turkey exported 268,699 tons of hazelnuts and obtained $1.54 billion in the same period of last season.

The country is the largest producer of hazelnuts in the world and its production accounts for approximately 75 percent of worldwide production.

Seoul's statement reveals de facto agreement for service and investment sectors, after closing differences that had led to lengthy delay

World Bulletin / News Desk

South Korea and Turkey have paved the way for a new free trade deal covering the service and investment sectors, according to Seoul’s trade ministry on Monday.

A seventh round of talks in the South Korean capital produced the agreement after lengthy negotiations.

“The two sides reached a de facto agreement as they narrowed their remaining differences on the text of the FTA,” Assistant Trade Minister Woo Tae-hee told reporters.

Negotiations had only resumed in August last year after being on hold for 17 months due to those unspecified differences.

The deal is set to be officially signed by the first half of 2015, according to Woo.

A separate FTA was implemented just over a year ago to remove trade barriers for products – since then bilateral trade has leapt more than 30 percent to $6.3 billion.

Woo added that the latest agreement “is well expected to help greatly expand the countries’ bilateral trade in the service sector.”

South Korea and Turkey already exchange services worth around $740 million per year.

A Seoul trade ministry press release further celebrated the outcome of the latest round of negotiations with a statement Monday.

"We believe the service, investment FTA will help expand economic relations between South Korea and Turkey by upgrading the South Korea-Turkey FTA, which has been limited to products, to a comprehensive, high-level FTA."

Turkey has 17 trade deals, but none so far that stretch beyond products in the service and investment sectors.

South Korea takes pride in the strength of the two countrty's bilateral ties, not least because Turkey sent nearly 15,000 soldiers to fight on the South’s side during the Korean War of 1950-53.

Turkey, Japan set to open trade negotiations in earnest

The Two countries complete technical phase of talks as they pursue drive to boost bilateral trade.

ANKARA
The technical stage of negotiations towards an economic partnership agreement between Turkey and Japan has been completed, Turkey's economy minister has said.

Nihat Zeybekci's comments Tuesday came after he participated in the Turkish-Japanese Business Forum in Istanbul with Japanese Trade Minister Toshimitsu Motegi.

Zeybekci said: "We had a productive meeting with the Japanese minister and negotiations on an economic partnership agreement will be started with Japan as soon as possible."

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Japanese counterpart, Shinzo Abe, had agreed on January 7 in Tokyo that the two countries would work towards a bilateral economic partnership agreement.

Motegi pointed out he was the first Japanese trade minister to visit Turkey.

"We are satisfied with developments and agreed to start negotiations for the partnership agreement later this year," he said.

- Deepening relations

Experts said the trade agreement would help Turkey to narrow its $3.3 billion trade deficit gap with Japan, deepen economic relations, enrich investment and cooperation opportunities, and boost bilateral trade.

Japan is the fourth-biggest exporter and importer in the world.

Although Japan's foreign trade volume was more than $1.7 trillion in 2012, Turkey's trade volume with Japan peaked at only $3.9 billion.

A total of 41.8 percent of Turkey's exports to Japan consist of food and beverages.

As the fourth-largest importer of food and beverages with a share of 5.7 percent of world imports, Japan has been one of the most important markets for Turkey.

- Deals agenda

Turkey's main food and beverage items to Japan include fish fillets (mainly blue-fin tuna), tomatoes, pasta, olive oil, dried fruits, nuts and tobacco.

Japanese exports of vehicles, electronics and energy equipment gave it a trade surplus of about $3.3 billion with Turkey in 2012.

Turkey has a one percent share in merchandise trade worldwide. Turkey's share of imports from Japan is two percent.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan began his first foreign visit of 2014 to Japan in January, as part of his South Asian tour, accompanied by ministers and business people, with energy deals and economic relations at the top of the agenda.

Turkey seeks to renew customs union agreement with EU

Turkey wants to renew its customs union agreement with the European Union to boost the country’s economy, EU Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said July 9.

Turkey is the only non-EU country that has a Customs Union Agreement, which was a key step to prospective EU membership. Cavuşoğlu stated that Turkey has now started to review the terms of the agreement, almost 20 years after it first went into effect in December 1995.

“As the EU negotiation process lingers, the negative impact on the economy grows. It is injustice for the Turkish economy,” he said during a fast-breaking iftar meal organized by the Economic Development Foundation (İKV).

As a signatory of the agreement, Turkish officials argue that free trade agreements signed by the EU with other countries effectively open Turkey’s market to exports from them, but block Turkey from the tax advantages associated with exporting goods to the same states, as Turkey is not a party to the deals.

At the same meal, European Commission Director General for Development Stefano Manservisi said the crisis-hit EU was currently undergoing a “transformation,” adding that “Turkey will help us build a stronger house.”

Turkey’s average per capita income exceeds $19,000: Deputy PM

Turkey’s average per capita income now exceeded $19,000 based on purchasing power parity, meaning the country had reached 60 percent of EU and Japanese average level of prosperity, Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan has said.

Babacan’s comments came in a wide-ranging speech during a fast-breaking iftar meal organized by the Independent Industrialists’ and Businessmen’s Association (MÜSİAD) in Ankara.

Touching on a number issues regarding the local and global economic situation, he said the biggest challenge ahead of the Turkish economy was the high current account deficit, blaming rising oil prices and low savings levels.

Political agenda ‘convenient for 2023 goals’

Babacan also promised that Turkey would have an intense “reform agenda” in the forthcoming period to deal with issues “especially in energy, where Turkey has challenges to decrease its imports, increase its efficiency and invest in nuclear energy.”

He said the future electoral schedule would be convenient for realizing these reforms. “After the 2015 election, there will be no elections from 2015 to 2019 and 2019 to 2023. So if the country benefits from this efficiently and introduces the necessary reforms it will be very easy to reach its objectives by 2023,” he said.

The first round of Turkey’s presidential election will be held on Aug. 10 and the country’s 18th general elections are due to be held in June 2015 to elect 550 new members of Parliament.

Turkey aims to become one of the top 10 economies in the world by 2023 and to increase its annual exports to $500 billion.

Global challenges

Pointing to “difficult periods” experienced by the world economy in the last seven years, Babacan said the “largest economic crisis of the past 100 years was still not over.”

“Developed countries’ high debt stock will remain on the agenda as a problem for many years … We’re seeing signs of recovery in these countries but this recovery, particularly in Europe, is not on a firm footing,” he said.

According to the World Bank, the combined stock of developing countries’ external debt increased by $464 billion to $4.9 trillion at end-2011.
